An exper t on g lobal intelligence will remind the audience at Lakeway’s Veterans Day ceremony of the role veterans have played in defending our country’s freedom.

Fred Burton, vice president of intelligence at global intelligence and advisory firm Stratfor, will be the guest speaker at the Veterans Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Performing Arts Center at Lake Travis High School, 3324 RM 620 S.

Burton oversees Stratfor’s analysis of global security developments and consults with clients on security-related issues. Before joining Stratfor, Burton was a counterterrorism agent with the U.S. State Department from 1985 to 1999.

He was deputy chief of counterterrorism at the Diplomatic Security Service where he was in charge of preventing and investigating attacks against diplomatic personnel and facilities. While a Stratfor analyst, he was appointed to the Border Security Council and served as the assistant director for intelligence and counterterrorism at the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Burton is the author of “GHOST: Confessions of a Counterterrorism Agent” and “Chasing Shadows: A Special Agent’s Lifelong Hunt to Bring a Cold War Assassin to Justice.” His latest book, “Under Fire: The Untold Story of the Attack in Benghazi,” is a New York Times best-seller and provides the first detailed account of the infamous assault in Libya in September 2012.

The Lake Travis Standing Military Committee will host the event in cooperation with the City of Lakeway, Lakeway Police Department, Lake Travis ISD, members of the Lohmann’s Ford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Lakeway Heritage Commission.

“We owe a debt we can never fully repay to the men and women who have sacrificed to preserve our freedom, but Veterans Day is one way we honor their service,” Lakeway Mayor Joe Bain said.

At the ceremony, the City of Lakeway will pay tribute to 17 veterans whose names have been engraved on the Spirit of Freedom Monument, Lakeway Police Department Color Guard and Piper Corps will present the colors and Lake Travis High School Band and

Choir will perform patriotic music and military anthems.“Once again, we are pleased to host this event for the Lake Travis

community,” LTISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brad Lancaster said. “LTISD applauds the Lake Travis Standing Military Committee for their efforts to involve our students and school community in this unique event. We look forward to honoring our veterans on their special day, and furthermore, to providing our students with incredible learning opportunities.”

Lakeway Council Member Ron Massa also will speak, and the Lohmann’s Crossing chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will present a memorial wreath. USAF Ret. Major General Rod Kelly will emcee the event, and Lake Hills Church Pastor Mac Richard will deliver the invocation.

Organizers encourage the public to arrive at 10 a.m. to park and enter the auditorium. Handicapped access will be at the parking lot immediately south of the Performing Arts Center.

Jessica Alderson, Texas Parks and Wildlife urban biologist, will discuss urban deer and Lakeway’s urban deer management at a public meeting at 6 p.m. Nov. 18 at Lakeway City Hall, 1102 Lohmans Crossing.

Alderson’s presentation will cover deer biology and behavior, challenges of managing urban deer, and what would happen if the city stopped its deer management program.

“We have new people moving into Lakeway, and they are starting to question some of the city’s deer management practices,” she said. “Deer populations can get out of control if a deer management program is not in place,” she said.

Since the late 1990s, the city has managed the local deer population through trapping them and educating the public. City law prohibits the feeding of deer.

To mitigate overpopulation, Lakeway has established a deer management program that functions much like natural predation. Deer are trapped and removed from the city in the fall and winter in order to maintain a healthy and safe deer population.

Many generations of deer have lived their entire lives within

Lakeway to Host Deer Management Meetingthe city in very close proximity to people. Therefore, they have all but lost their fear of human beings. This, combined with a lack of natural predation, causes a proliferation of whitetails that will result in overpopulation. This is not healthy for the deer or humans.

When overcrowded, deer can suffer from a lack of forage and become malnourished and diseased. They are also more likely to be struck by cars or become caught up in unnatural barriers such as fences. Overcrowded deer also become a nuisance to residents by damaging landscape plants and causing unsafe driving conditions. Vehicle collisions are usually fatal to the deer and can be fatal to the occupants of the vehicle.

After her presentation, Alderson will answer questions. Lakeway Mayor Joe Bain and members of Lakeway’s Deer Management Committee also will be present.

“I encourage anyone who has questions about Lakeway’s deer management program to attend this meeting to educate themselves,” Bain said.

LTlov's Green Santa program is busy preparing for another successful outreach to Lake Travis children in need. The community collection drive will begin on Monday, November 23rd and run through Friday, December 11th and donations of dolls, cars and trucks, sports equipment, games, blocks and building kits, art supplies and gift cards to local retailers will be greatly appreciated. Last year Green Santa provided gifts and food cards to 656 children from 217 Lake Travis families and the program was supported by many individuals, businesses and organizations. The task of sorting the gifts, packing the donation boxes and distributing them to the registered families is one that also requires community support. If you or your group, club or organization is interested in helping with this effort between Monday, December 7th through Monday, December 14th please contact [email protected]. Daytime, after school and evening opportunities to volunteer are available and middle school and high school students are welcome. For more information about Green Santa and to locate a donation site, visit www.ltlov.org. To enquire about volunteering or to sign up for a day and time, email [email protected].

You’re amazing, Lake Travis!

High Area Wide Usage in July, August Causes Increased October 1 Bills

In June of 2015, our Board moved to Stage 1 Water Restrictions which allowed customers to irrigate twice per week from May 1 through September 30 instead of once per week. At the same time, we went without rain almost totally for the months of July-October. Historically, the August/September bills which are mailed October 1 are the highest of the year. This year the impact was increased due to irrigation restrictions being lifted. In the month of August, LMUD furnished 110 MILLION GALLONS to our customers, the highest volume we have provided in several years, and up 25 MILLION GALLONS from July.

Lakeway MUD installed new electronic meters at every customer site within the last 2+ years. Every meter that has been tested has proven to be accurate. Our experience is that the vast majority of high usage customers discover the issue is with their irrigation system. The other common culprit is the toilet. A running toilet can waste up to 200 gallons per day. If you are not sure about your toilet, pour some food coloring in the tank. If it is running when it shouldn’t be, you will see the food coloring in the bowl within about 30 minutes. Another hint is to turn all water outlets off in your house, pool, and sprinkler system. Then, go look at your meter; if everything is turned off, and you still see movement on your water meter, you very likely have a leak somewhere. We are very concerned about high usage, which is why we send out emails alerting those that appear to be considerably above their normal usage.

With the new meters, we have the ability to profile the exact time and date in hourly increments the number of gallons running through the meter for the last 30, 60, or 90 days (or, since the installation of the meter if requested). Many of our customers are surprised to see the time of day or night the usage is being recorded, and this gives an indication of where to look for overages. We had some customers recently that mistakenly programmed their irrigation systems to run every night of the week instead of the twice per week they were trying to program.

If you would like to have your meter profiled, just call the office and we will be glad to set an appointment to do that for you.

Please remember that not all of Lakeway is serviced by Lakeway MUD. WCID #17 also services a portion of the City. Check your Water Utility Bill to verify your water provider.

By entering into this agreement, the building of yet another Wastewater Plant in or close to Lakeway has been avoided. the Highlands benefiting both Lakeway MUD Customers and Rough Hollow and the Highlands Customers. This cooperation between the organizations should be beneficial to the entire community. Many long hours were devoted to making this happen, and we thank MUDs 11, 12, & 13 as well as the City of Lakeway for their contributions to the success of this arrangement.

Expansion of the existing plant will take place over the next few years, and should be hardly noticeable to the public since the LMUD plant is fairly well hidden from street view. The LMUD plant is located South of Highlands Road and Trophy Drive.

Spotlight on our Board of DirectorsLakeway MUD’s Board of Directors consist of 5 individuals each

elected for 4 year terms by the In-District Tax Payers. Our current members are Larry Burmeier, President, Kay Andrews, Vice President/Treasurer, Jerry Hietpas, Secretary, Tom Brewer, Director and Parliamentarian, and Mel Neese, Director.

While the Board meets once a month at the District Office (1097 Lohmans Crossing, Lakeway), our Board members often spend many hours each month going to committee and other meetings. Our Directors are elected to 4 year terms, and are not paid for their service.

We wanted to take this opportunity to thank our Board for the time and effort they unselfishly devote to the success of Lakeway MUD.

Back in October of 2008, Warren Buffet wrote an editorial in the Opinion column of the New York Times titled, “Buy American. I Am.”

Throughout the article he explained his thoughts on his rule of stock purchasing: “Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful.” He went on to make the comment, “In short, bad news is an investor’s best friend. It lets you buy a slice of America’s future at a marked-down price.”

Buffet made these comments just over 7 years ago, and yet they could have been spoken last week. We all know that history repeats itself, and this could not be more clear when looking at cycles in the stock market.

Last month’s article covered the necessity of volatility for public markets and the importance of being ready to benefit from that volatility. To build on that discussion, let’s take a look at whether there is more fear or greed in the economy today.

Obviously, there is currently a much stronger sentiment of fear in the day to day news surrounding the global economy. Many people are uncomfortable with the uncertainty and are getting out of their current portfolio positions. This leads to

an opportunity for people willing to follow Warren Buffet’s philosophy.

Instead of trying to find comfort during uncertain economic times, those who are willing to be comfortable being uncomfortable are often rewarded handsomely for prudent planning during these time periods.

This is not the time to be sitting back holding onto cash equivalents because they feel safe. You need to take a long-term view towards the current climate and find the opportunities that exist. I am not recommending you take leveraged positions or invest in weak areas of the market, but there are many sound companies whose long-term success is completely unaffected by the current economic news.

This is a time for action. Don’t let the opportunity to be greedy when everyone else is fearful pass you by.

Jointly, the LTHS boys and girls soccer programs are conducting our capital campaign to raise funds for much needed all-weather bench shelters to protect the players from the extremities. These shelters will enhance our program. Currently, our programs boast five teams, 100 student athletes and successful seasons that have led to

post season runs including last year where the girls ended with second place in District 14-6A at 12-5-3 and the boys finished as Region 2 Finalists with a record of 22-2-1.

The district has approved the purchase of two 24’ bench shelters, along with a 9’ bench shelter for trainers and school administrative staff as well as a storage facility to store the shelters when not in use. That’s where you come in. We are in need of $30,000 to make this happen before the season starts in January! Here’s how you can help!

Donate to the Capital Campaign today and when it’s time for the players to step onto the pitch for the first game of the season, the bench shelters will be in place. But it will only happen if you help us.LevelFree Kick up to $249Bicycle Kick $250-$499Breakaway $500-$999Goooaaalll! $1000-$2999Hat Trick $3,000 World Cup over $3000

Hosted by True Trailblazers The Lake Travis Mountain Bike Team is a trail blazer for mountain bike teams across the state of Texas. Since its inception 4 years ago, they have lived up to the Lake Travis sports standard, earning 3 Texas State titles and several individual titles over the years. Led by coaches Doug Lange, Michael Smith, Scott Pemberton, Heath Kelly, Rick Margiotta and Gina Lange, they have grown the team from a handful of kids that first year to nearly 30 students that actively compete on the 6A club circuit. The LTHS Mountain Bike Team and LAME (Lakeway Area Mountain bike Enthusiasts) work closely together, with all of the LTHS coaches also active members of LAME. LAME meets every Wednesday night for a tailgate and night ride at Mount Lakeway. LAME also helps maintain the trail system throughout Lakeway for the enjoyment of mountain bikers and hikers alike. Mount Lakeway and the Canyonlands Trailhead is also once again the location of this year’s 4th Annual Turkey Trot. The Turkey Trot, which started as a group of friends who gathered on Thanksgiving morning at Mount Lakeway for a hike, rather than going all the way downtown, is turning into a fun annual event. What began as an informal gathering of friends, has grown into a community event as well as a grassroots fundraising effort for the American Cancer Society. Hosted this year by the LAME, they are collecting donations of any amount that will go directly to the American Cancer Society through the

4th Annual Lakeway Turkey TrotLTHS Mountain Bike Team’s 2016 Relay For Life team. Relay For Life is the largest non-profit fundraiser in the world, and raises money for important research and programs that help patients stay well and get well. Unlike other Turkey Trots and events, they do not charge a fee to enter, but ask participants to make donations of any amount to the American Cancer Society (both cash and checks accepted). Last year they were able to raise over $700 and the only promotion they did was on Facebook a few days before. This year they are hoping to top $1500, since they are getting the word out early. The turnout last year was great considering, and only shows the desire of the people in the community to have a local event to help ease the guilt of the large turkey dinner and pumpkin pie they will consume later in the day. The event opens with free coffee and donuts (so much for guilt free) to all participants, provided by Randalls, Crown Donut & Donut Hole. This is not a race, but a challenging hike that will be divided into two different courses, including a shorter route than the traditional 5.5 mile round trip hike to the top of Mount Lakeway. Please come out and join the LTHS mountain bike team, LAME and Relay For Life for this fun morning on the trails. You too can be a trailblazer ;) Event starts at 8am for refreshments and donations. 8:30 start time. For more information on Relay For Life, visit www.relayforlife.org/laketravistx.
