Don’t forget your student card!You will need to show your Student Card before all your excursions and activities. It also has emergency contact details if you get lost or have a problem.

Your First Day


• LAL OfficeYou can send and receive letters and postcards at the LAL Office.

• Snacks and DrinksThere are vending machines on campus.

• Computers & Internet accessAll accommodation buildings have free wireless internet.

• Pocket MoneyPocket money is available on a scheduled basis. There will be a notice advertising pocket money times and where you can get your pocket money on every student notice board.

Facilities• Laundry

If you need to wash your clothes, please speak to your House Parent. There is a coin operated laundry room in each accommodation building.

• Dining RoomThe cafeteria is situated in the McGinley Center.

Wait in line outside the cafeteria until you are told to enter by a member of LAL staff.

Always be polite and say ‘thank you’ to our kitchen staff.

• You will receive an LAL Course Book during your first class which you must bring to all your lessons along with this handbook, a pen and a pencil.

• If you lose your ID card you will have to pay $2 for a new card.

• No ID card, no food!

• You must respect the other students, the staff, their things and the school. This is your home for the next few weeks.

What are house points?•Any student can win or lose House Points at any time during your stay.

•You can earn house points during activities and for good behavior.

•However bad behavior could cost your whole accommodation house points.

LAL staff will give you ‘Cookies’ for positive reasons like winning competitions and helping others.

What are ‘Cookies’?‘Cookies’ are tokens which you can spend at the Casino and Auction Nights, to win prizes.

• The Inside Scoop is a worksheet that links the academic and leisure programs.

• There is an Inside Scoop for every included excursion, this will be introduced in class by your teacher so that you have essential information relating to that day’s excursion.

ExcursionsYou will have one full-day and four half-day excursions per week.

•Full-day – Ellis Island & The Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building & the Metropolitan Museum.

•Half-day – Times Square, SoHo, American Museum of Natural History, 9/11 Memorial and Museum, Greenwich Village, ‘Top of the Rock’, Central Park, Farewell to Manhattan.

•There are additional excursions for 3 and 4 weeks students

LAL New York Rose Hill has two accommodation buildings•Campbell Hall•Conley and Salice Hall

Each apartment has its own bathroom which you will share with your roommates, a living area and a kitchen.

Do not use the stove or oven as it has been switched off. Please do not play with any of the kitchen equipment.

Road Safety• Cars drive on the right side of

the road in the US.

• Remember to look to the left before crossing the road.

• If there is a pedestrian crossing please use it.

• All pedestrian crossings in New York are light-controlled crossings. Wait at the side of the crossing until you see the green man/green walk sign, check that there are no cars coming then cross the road.


Fire SafetyThere are fire safety notices around the school, please follow the fire safety instructions upon discovering a fire or hearing the fire alarm.
