Review/Approve Previous Month’s Minutes The minutes for the January CMC meeting were presented. Motion to approve minutes: Rick Pfeil Second: Tom Hardt
THE MOTION CARRIED.
TAKE TEN
Doug led the CMC in a discussion about Joining Jesus on His Mission. Various members shared stories of their
experiences in the past month. We will be taking ten again next month.
Ministry Reports –
All ministry leaders submit reports prior to the meeting.
Sam reported that Local Missions weekend went well. Most if not all of the sites were new sites, and there were no
complaints. They also did personality testing, which was fun and interesting for youth and adults as well.
Rick reported that the fabric for the pews has been ordered and the installation should occur between Easter and the
50th anniversary celebration.
Discussion/Updates
Pastor’s Report – The Reverend Doctor Settle (!) reported that his dissertation should be available soon. He is
working on a book, meeting with publishers to find out the next steps. We have 12 confirmands this year who will be
confirmed the last Sunday in April. One prayer retreat just occurred; the next will be March 28. There were about 30
people at the February retreat. Doug and Mike attended the first one and encouraged all CMC members to attend the
second one if they weren’t at the first. Ash Wednesday is Feb. 26 with noon and 7:15 pm services. The theme is “Savior
of the Nations, Come”. There is lunch after the Wednesday morning Bible study and before the noon service and dinner
before the evening services. Pastor also distributed an article entitled “Here Come the Skinny Cows”, which discusses
giving trends. New believers, especially younger generations, don’t think about the church’s bills getting paid; they need
to be told what is expected of them. “Christians give; it’s what we do.”
Ministry Plans –
Christina reported that as of the end of January we have received $512,000 for the capital campaign in addition to $14K
of debt reduction contributions. We also paid down $350K on the mortgage last week, which is a portion of the $512K
received. She also told us that having church members investing in Texas Church Extension Fund – which pays
competitive interest -- pays rebates to Lamb of God. That information will be coming out in the bulletin soon.
Sam reported that a goal for youth is to have more visibility throughout the congregation. That includes having the
youth sit together during services. Another thought is to have youth participate in ushering. They are trying to get
middle school parents more involved. They are working on revitalizing the youth Bible study curriculum.
Gabby reported that the Children’s Ministry wants to foster family involvement. They want to do family fellowship
events as well as involve families in Sunday School. They want to try to add a children’s involvement to local missions
next year. They are planning to organize a week at Camp Lone Star this summer for families as well.
Dave Meeks – Fellowship – 3 events planned for this year – family picnic (April 5) which will include the Easter egg hunt,
potentially Oktoberfest (planning is in the works), Trunk or Treat, and a fall music event, similar to the big band event
this past fall. Lent and Advent meals are also in the plan.
Facilities - Rick reported that one of the biggest tasks is security. We are hoping to take advantage of available grants to
fund some of the security initiatives. Anita Thiede and her Journey to Dream connections will help Rick write the grant
applications. The committee will be meeting monthly to continue to assess needs.
Servanthood – Adam – improve participation. Having a generosity Sunday in the fall. Move to opt in system for
envelopes so that people who don’t use them won’t get them just to throw them away. There will be a ministry fair in
the late summer/early fall. We hope to include the volunteer fair outside agencies. We are working on the spiritual gifts
inventory. It is online, but there are also paper copies available. CMC and ministry staff will be asked to take that before
the end of March.
Music – Stephanie – Make corporate worship a priority, focused on Word and Sacrament. Make hymn choices reflecting
LCMS theological beliefs. 50th anniversary – music budget is $2,000; LWML donated $500 and fundraising was done for
the balance. Summer music camp this summer. Enrollment starts March 29. Sept 27 is the Lutheran Hymn Festival at
the Meyerson.
Budget – Christina reported that ministry budgets are due next week to Darcie. She and Doug will be meeting with some
of the larger-budget ministries after they turn in their budgets (during the first couple of weeks of March). By the March
meeting we will have a preliminary budget.
On the financial statement, Christina reported that on church income, we are currently $110K behind YTD budget; ECM
is also short about $33K. ECM has $25K savings that partially offset their income shortfall. On the church side, we have
salary savings of about $33K, benefit savings of about $30K, and mortgage savings of about $46K, so we are actually
trending about $14K ahead of budget on the net income.
Action Items –None
President’s Report – Doug congratulated Pastor Rance on his earning his doctorate and on the yeoman job he is
doing handling everything at Lamb of God.
CLOSING THOUGHTS - nothing additional.
Motion to adjourn – Dave Meeks
Second –Sam Ewing
THE MOTION CARRIED.
The meeting adjourned at 8:50 with the Lord’s Prayer.
Respectfully submitted,
Patti Hawkins, Secretary

Coronavirus and the Church “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore, we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters
roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.” - Psalm 46:1-3, ESV
Among the fears that Martin Luther would have encountered was a breakout of the bubonic plague in 1527. Surrounded by the sick in every direction, Luther counseled Christians to remember the command from Jesus Himself to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” A breakout of sickness was no occasion to ignore Jesus’ command and Jesus did not put any conditions on that statement.
As fear and panic erupts over COVID-19/coronavirus, we Christians are left asking ourselves how to best “love our neighbor.” You may not be overly concerned and think all the hyping and pushing of the story by the media is way overblown. But if that’s your conviction— be gentle with your neighbor who is scared. “Love your neighbor”…with no conditions attached.
Whatever happens, we are not a people of fear. Jesus has said, “Love your neighbor,” so that’s exactly what we will stand ready to do. “We will not fear though the earth gives way” because Jesus is Lord and He is the Victor over death and the grave. Along with loving our neighbor, He has also told us, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me” and “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” (1 Corinthians 11:24-25) Jesus has told us to eat His body and drink His blood. We will not stop doing that now or at any point for as long as we are given to do so in this world. He attached no conditions to that eating and drinking. It’s what His people do…even in times of crisis.
We are left to figure out the best way to balance doing what Jesus has given us to do by coming to His Holy Meal and how to best love our neighbor. It’s a balancing act which sinful people will struggle with. Some people will find these measures annoying and unnecessary. Others will think that more should be done. Whatever the case, “Love your neighbor.” With that being said, here’s what we’re doing at Lamb of God in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak:
1. Older and vulnerable members are asked to consider the best
options for themselves. If you are sick, please stay home.
2. Personal hygiene is the best measure of protection you have.
Frequent hand washing, avoiding touching your face, especially
your mouth, nose and eyes and coughing in a tissue all help us to
take care of ourselves and each other.
3. Handshaking at the church is not recommended at this time. Fist
bumps, elbow bumps, and even bowing to your neighbor are
acceptable. If you aren’t welcomed with a handshake on Sunday
morning, don’t feel like we’re not pleased that you’re here! We’re
just taking precautions to eliminate unnecessary spread of germs.
3. Because we heed the Lord’s Word, we will not eliminate the
celebration of the Lord’s Supper, nor the practice of the common
cup with the individual cup. Our practice has always been for
Pastors, Elders and Altar Guild to wash their hands and use germ
killer before touching anything related to Communion. This will
continue to be our practice
4. We are working on internet options to help members stay
connected and to be able to worship, no matter the distance.
Luther wrote "I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall
fumigate, help purify the air, administer medicine and take it. I shall
avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in
order not to become contaminated and thus perchance inflict and
pollute others and so cause their death as a result of my
negligence. If God should wish to take me, he will surely find me
and I have done what he has expected of me and so I am not
responsible for either my own death or the death of others. If my
neighbor needs me however I shall not avoid place or person but
will go freely as stated above. See this is such a God-fearing faith
because it is neither brash no foolhardy and does not tempt God."
LW 43:113-38
Prayers abound. And we take comfort in the Lord who has pleaded
with His own blood to take up the job to love and provide for us as
none other can! (Romans 8:31-39)
