They will pick up serpents with their hands,
and if they drink any deadly thing,
it will not harm them.”
Mark’s account of the commissioning of the
Apostles is abrupt and very dramatic. For us
to imagine today picking up snakes and
drinking poison is insane. Early Church Fa-
thers interpreted these signs metaphorically-poison of
false doctrine, the serpents of evil deeds. Perhaps su-
perstitions and gossiping is more what we see today as
“false doctrine” and “evil deeds”. We, disciples of Je-
sus, can resist superstitions and wishing wells with
Trust in the Lord and we can persevere being the sub-
ject of gossips by following God’s Will in our daily
living. The Lord is working with you everyday the
signs are in you, around you and in the people you
meet.
Wait for the Lord, take courage;
be stouthearted, wait for the Lord! Ps 27:14

dramático. Para nosotros hoy en día sería
una locura recoger serpientes y tomar
veneno. El Padre de la Iglesia antigua interpreta estas
señales metafóricamente-veneno de la “falsa doctrina”
y “hechos diabólicos”. Nosotros, discípulos de Jesús,
podemos resistir supersticiones y deseamos el bien
con nuestra confianza en el Señor y podemos
perseverar ser el tema de los chismes al seguir la
Voluntad de Dios en nuestra vida diaria. El Señor
está trabajando contigo a diario las señales están en ti,
a tu alrededor y en la gente que conozcas.
Espera por el Señor, ten valor;
Se fuerte de corazón, espera por el Señor! Ps 27:14

Bishop Announces Pentecost Prayer Week
Bishop Joseph Strickland has asked the entire
Christian community in East Texas to unite in prayer from May 17 to 24 to seek God's blessing
on East Texas and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to lead all Christians to be stronger
witnesses of God's love and mercy.
Bishop Strickland will lead an ecumenical prayer service on Pentecost Sunday (May 24) at 2 p.m.
at the Chapel of Sts. Peter & Paul in Tyler. All are invited.
Diocese to Celebrate Bishop's 30th Anniversary Bishop Joseph E. Strickland will celebrate the 30th anniversary of his priestly ordination with a Mass of Thanksgiving on June 1 at 6 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Fr. Hank Lanik, rector of the Cathedral, invites the priests, deacons, consecrated religious and lay faith-ful of the diocese to attend the Mass and reception that will follow in the Cathedral Center.
El Obispo Anuncia Semana de Oración Pentecostés
El Obispo Joseph Strickland ha pedido a toda la
comunidad Cristiana del Este de Texas que se unan en oración del 17 al 24 de Mayo para pedir la
bendición de Dios para el Este de Texas y la inspiración del Espíritu Santo para guiar a todos los
Cristianos a ser testigos más fuertes del amor y
misericordia de Dios. El Obispo Strickland conducirá un servicio de
oración ecuménico el Domingo Pentecostés (24 de Mayo) a las 2pm en la Parroquia de San Pedro
