○ Calculator: Club funds were used to purchase a graphing calculator for a math student who could not afford to buy one. ○ Trick or Canning: On Halloween club members collected over 600 items of canned goods for the Parker Task Force instead of traditional trick-or-treating. ○ Sweet Street: Club members volunteered at Chaparral’s indoor Halloween trick-or-treat event to provide a safe and fun environment for children in the community. ○ Gifts for Custodial and Kitchen Staff: Students stuffed decorative coffee mugs with candy and treats. They were delivered to each member of Chaparral’s custodial and kitchen staff as a thank-you for their service. ○ Teacher Appreciation: Twice this year, club members wrote positive notes of appreciation for all Chaparral teachers and placed the notes on teacher’s doors or white boards. Students also washed teachers’ cars in support of a member’s “Year of the Teacher” campaign for her Girl Scout Gold Award. ○ Rotary Community Corps: Eleven club members volunteered to help seat and serve attendees at the Rotary Community Corps 5-year celebration. ○ Hat Day for Polio: To support the “Pennies for Polio” campaign (in conjunction with the Legend High School Interact Club), students paid $1 for the privilege of wearing a hat to school. Operation Christmas Child: Members collected toys and personal items for needy children around the world. The items were packed into individual gift boxes and funds were collected to ship the boxes overseas. O Dominican Republic Literacy Support: Working with Community Connections Intl., club members attempted to plan a trip to the D.R. with 2 goals in mind: support of the Literacy Project for which they made books last year and the establishment of an Interact Club in Consuelo, D.R. Unfortunately, not enough students were able to travel; however, plans are underway to support CCI in other ways. There is no question that Chaparral's Interact Club is one of the most active and vibrant in the community. t The Rotary Club of Parker can be proud of their many enthusiastic members and their and numerous and varied accomplishments. Way to go, Chaparral!

The Chaparral Interact Club celebrated the end of the school year with a banquet. Co-presidents, Emily Pook and Kellyn Dassler, assisted by their faculty advisor, Carolyn Ford, handed out certificates to now nearly 50 dues-paying members. Collectively, the club provided over 600 hours of service this past year. Here are some of their many worthwhile projects accomplished during the 2014-2015 school year. Nike Grind: A drive to collect used athletic shoes so that they can be recycled, i.e., ground up and used for playgrounds. Three large trash bags of shoes were collected. (See: http://www.nike.com/us/en_us/c/better-world/reuse-a-shoe) ○ Teens for Jeans: A drive to collect used jeans for homeless teens. Two large trash bags of jeans were collected. ○ (See: https://www.dosomething.org/campaigns/teens-jeans) ○ Birthday cards for kids in homeless shelters: During a club meeting, colorful paper and markers were distributed for club members to create birthday cards for kids in homeless shelters. Cards were sent to homeless children through https://www.dosomething.org.

Serving with ShelterBox in times of disaster By Ellina Kushnir, RI Programs staff

When disaster strikes, our partner ShelterBox often works closely with Rotarians to evaluate local needs and devise a plan for immediate response. The Rotary family provides vital assistance to ShelterBox Response Teams by helping with disaster assessments, housing response team volunteers, and helping coordinate relief logistics. Over the past twelve years, Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Interactors have partnered with ShelterBox to help communities in dire need of assistance immediately following a disaster:

When the April 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal, Rotaractors and Rotarians quickly connected with ShelterBox to assess damage and mobilize emergency relief teams. The Rotary family in Nepal and around the world has been instrumental in helping ShelterBox with logistics, transportation, housing Response Teams, and sponsoring emergency shelter tents and relief kits.

In addition to distributing transitional housing resources, ShelterBox also provides SchoolBoxes with educational materials to mitigate disruption in education as teachers continue working with students while communities are rebuilt. ShelterBox works with a variety of implementing partners and fellow relief organizations to ensure necessary aid including medical care, food assistance, and permanent housing is included.

Each ShelterBox, tailored to the particular disaster, typically contains a relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water storage and purification equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack, and other essential items. Distributions may also include SchoolBoxes containing essential tools for teachers and basic educational supplies for 50 children.

Parker Rotarian Al Johnson, said that an anonymous donor offered to match the first $100,000 in donations marked for the ShelterBox matching gift campaign during the month of May, 2015. So our latest $1,000 for one box has turned into 2 boxes. Al’s records show that the Rotary Club of Parker began supporting Shelter Boxes in

2006. Our boxes have been sent to Beirut, Lebanon, Karachi, Pakistan, Mexico, Niger, Sumatra, Haiti, Ethiopia, Uganda and Nepal . The boxes all cost $1,000 each, and are designed to support 10 people for at least 6 months. With the box just purchased, we’ve purchased 18 Shelter Boxes since 2006!

APRIL 29

By Mike Oldham

It is hoped that as many of our members as

possible will attend this event which is being

held to inform youth in our community, that

over the past year have been associated with

our Rotary Club, and their parents and

siblings, about the benefits that Rotary has to

offer to them in their futures. The second goal

of this event is to determine if the parents of

any of these youth would like to consider

becoming a member in our club. Along toward

the end of this month emails will go out to the

parents and students asking for RSVPs for this

event.

I will circulate a clip board asking club

members to sign up to attend and bring a

guest if they like. My plan is to prepare an

agenda well in advance and ask our president

and president elect, and Youth Service

Chair, to speak to this group. Refreshments

will be served.

If you have questions please let me know. This

function is an activity of your club's

Membership and Youth Services committees.

Thanks, Mike Oldham
