June Member Spotlight Tom VanderHeiden

Tom was born and raised in Sioux Falls South Dakota.

As a boy he was active in scouting, achieving the rank of

Eagle Scout. Tom’s father worked as a Jobber in the South Dakota

oil and gas business, delivering fuel and supplies to gas stations

throughout the state. Football was the sport of choice for Tom,

and he played through his high school years as well as at Augustana

College also in Sioux Falls where he continued his education.

Tom received a Bachelor’s degree in political science from Augustana, but more importantly, it was at college that he met Nancy, his future wife. Wasting no time, Tom and Nancy were married in 1967 - just five days after graduation. Next, it was off to law school at the University of Denver but after only two years of studies, Tom enlisted in the Navy. Tom served our country during the Viet Nam conflict for 8 years as a Lieutenant in Naval Air Intelligence stationed primarily in Maine and other bases in the 6th fleet. In 1976 Tom and Nancy with three young boys in tow, returned to Denver where Tom entered the Financial Services Industry selling life insurance for Lincoln National. He quickly transitioned into the investment side of the industry where he serves today after 38 years. He is a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and has his own company, VanderHeiden Financial, which provides financial planning services and investment coaching for individuals. His areas of focus include estate planning, retirement planning, college funding, and wealth accumulation. Tom’s company is dedicated to client education and holds several personal investment education events each year. Tom has settled well into his home of thirty-four years in the Chenango neighborhood. His sons are in their thirties now, thankfully all live in the Denver area and have blessed Tom and Nancy with six grandchildren – five girls and one boy. Tom enjoys skiing, fly fishing, camping, and flower gardening. Tom has been in service to the community throughout his life including coaching his young son’s football, baseball and basketball teams. He has served as an Elder at Bethany Lutheran Church, served on the Board of the Martin Luther Home Society, is past President of Praying Hands Ranch, past President of the President’s Council for Good News Prison Ministries, and is currently Co-Chair of the Board for Freedom through Faith Ministries. He and his family attend South East Christian Church in Parker. Tom says that the foundation of his life is his faith. Tom joined the Evergreen Rotary Club in 1999 at the urging of one of his clients and transferred to the Parker Club in 2001 sponsored by Gary Meraz. He has been very active in Rotary, has chaired the Fund Raising Committee, the Vocational Services Committee, the art auction, the golf tournament, and was Master of Ceremonies of the recent “State of the Town” event and regularly presents Chaparral Students of the Month and Rotary college scholarships.

June Project Spotlight - Denver Indian Center

The Denver Indian Center, Inc. was established as

a non-profit Colorado corporation in 1983. Its

mission is “To empower our youth, families and

community through self-determination, cultural

identity and education”.

The Center serves a diverse group of tribes, the

majority of which represent the southwest, the

northern, and the southern Plains. Most come to

the Center seeking economic stability, education

and security for their families.

Parker Rotary Club became involved with the

Denver Indian Center through the work of Mike

Oldham. Mike observed that there was no Rotary

involvement in Indian aid organizations and set

out to change that. Mike met with the Colorado Lt

Governors’ office to advocate the needs and

concerns of American Indians in Colorado, and

was introduced to the Denver Indian Center.

As the District 5450 Governor, Mike suggested

that the District form an American Indian

Committee, and in 2010 by District Executive

Committee vote, the committee was established.

Several examples of Rotary’s service to the Center

are: 1) renovated the Center’s dilapidated

playground including replacing the playground

surface material and installing gently used

playground equipment, 2) assisted in organizing

and running several fund raisers for the Center, 3)

helped organize a “9 Health Fair” held at the

Center which has become an annual event now run

mostly by the Indians themselves, 4) participates

annually in handing out donated children’s gifts at

Christmas (even taking on the role as Santa and

Mrs. Clause!). The Center recently honored Rotary

with its “Community Service Award”.

With on-going support of Rotary and other Denver

area civic groups, the Center continues to be a

highly sought after location for the American

Indian community to gather for powwows and

various other activities held at the facility

throughout the year.

Words of Wisdom

Guest Columnist Irv Buck

Irv would like to introduce you to today’s speaker.

From Carol Carper - I was born in the same hospital as my father. St. Joseph's Hospital Denver (now torn down) My Rotary classification is Social Entrepreneur. I have been a Rotarian for 7 years. I had to retire to be a Rotarian..

Throughout my life I have been starting new things with others. Two Head Start programs, two Early Childhood Schools, a kindergarten program at Deer Creek Elementary, a family resource center. All were training for Kenya.

Currently, at home, I am a part of a group creating an Adult Literacy program for the Mountain Area. I also am interested in a program called Alternatives to Violence which is a Quaker program working with prison inmates. If I were home more I would get involved with that program.

Life has shaped me. All the people who have walked the journey with me have given me gifts of learning.. Some more than others.

This is more information than you wanted. Use as you would like. I prefer a focus on what I am doing in Kenya. What time am I to arrive on Wed. afternoon/evening? Carol Carper Harambee Kenya! "Let us all pull together"

education, and advocacy for affordable housing.

Sharon Nemechek earned her undergraduate degree in History from San Diego State University and her Masters Degree in Library and Information Science from UCLA. She started her library career at the Los Angeles Public Library in the patents search service and at the Huntington Library in the rare books and manuscripts collections. In Douglas County, she started as a substitute librarian and progressed to Department Head at Highlands Ranch Library and on to Branch Manager of both the Lone Tree and Parker branches. Sharon is presently Collection Services Manager for Douglas County Libraries. This entails management of the selection, ordering, and receiving of all library books, movies, and music c/ds, along with online sources and eBook collections. She is addicted to books of all kinds, from juvenile fiction to serious literary tomes to trashy romance. This makes coming to work every day an utter delight.
