Lance Gray & Company's 2013 Spring Fly-Fishing catalogTRANSCRIPT
Lance Gray & Company 2013 Spring Catalog
Spring is just around the corner, and with
spring comes some of the greatest fly-fishing
in Northern California. It’s the time that the
water is reborn and refreshed after the long
winter season. Mixed with longer sunshine
filled days the aquatic insects get active,
hatches of caddis, mayflies, damsels and the
famous Hexagenia all start to pop!
The Lower Sacramento comes alive with pre-
spawn fish eating everything in sight. Days
filled with rods bending, reels screaming, wild
fish being released and high fives causing
hands to hurt. The Sac is a magical place that
lends to life long memories and addictions.
With the Lower Sac going crazing with wild
trout, the mountain lakes shake off the winter
ice and become active with Damsels and
Hexagenia. The angler is somewhat confused
as to where to wet a line.
With Mother Nature giving all of these
wonderful places to fish, she throws one
additional last ditch slider at us – Shad! That
is right folks hundreds of thousands of the
fork tail boney ‘bows vigorously swimming up
the Sacramento River system to spawn in the
moonlight. Somewhat romantic, if you think
like a fish!
Spring is a wonderful time to experience the
bounty of the lakes and the rivers – so get out
there and fish!
Lower Sacramento River
Lower Sacramento
The fall is a fantastic time for the lower
Sacramento River. Fall will be alive with
salmon scattered over entry runs,
constructing redds in preparation to spawn.
Wild rainbows and chrome-bright steelhead
will be lurking about the salmon, hunting for
caddis, beatis and stones stirred from the
construction work. The rainbows and
steelhead linger anxiously for the instant
that the salmon initiates into active
spawning.
Eggs and legs" are rigged, rods tested, guests
are screaming, guides are coaching and the
fish are head-shaking in anger to the net.
Smiles turn to rehashing the event and
memories are generated forever. Images
capture the thrill of the day – the sweat, the
work and the wild rainbows posing so
perfectly for the camera. Some of the best
fishing on the Lower Sac happens during this
time.
The Lower Sacramento River is a fishery that
makes a guide contemplate the question, -
can anything be better than this? But, it also
leaves that burning, longing, desperation in
your gut when you are blanked – skunked!
It’s one of the greatest blue ribbon trout rivers
on the west coast, and a place that I feel at
home on. It’s the place that celebrations are
shared with fellow anglers, family and friends.
It’s the place that fish are forever
immortalized – and live in our minds forever.
Its place that has damned good fishing and
should be fished by all!
The spring is a great time to fish the Lower
Sac. The wild rainbows are on pre-spawn –
which means they’re eating, eating and
eating! They’re stocking up all the calories
only to burn every last one during the spawn.
Double doubles are common this time of the
year and it’s truly a great place to fish.
March 19 & 20, 2013 April 2, 11 & 28, 2013 Driftboat trips are $395 a day everything included

It will also include “nymphing without a bobber”; swinging flies while wading and dead drifting with single and double handle rods. The two day course will give anglers plenty of time to rig and practice each discipline. Everything is included, rods, reels, lines and flies. Each student will receive a complete Lower Sacramento Nymph School book filled with setups and detailed instruction sheets. April 24 & 25, 2013 Tuition is $450 a student

Fly-Fishing Tours
Lance Gray & Company fly-fishing tours have been an instant hit. The tour is an introduction to a fishery, while being guided. It’s a mixture
of a tour, workshop and a guided trip. Beginners to advanced fly-fishers have gained quick knowledge during the tours.
We’re the only full service outfitter providing this service, anywhere, and we mean anywhere in fly-fishing. The tours were hatched when our
owner Lance Gray listened to the need of guest who just needed a little assistance or as he calls it “a cheat sheet”, on the fishery.
With over a 125 anglers having participated in the program since it was conceived last year, we have developed a tour that is almost “perfect”.
See what it’s all about.
Yuba River Tour
The Lower Yuba River Tour
The Yuba River Tour is here. The Yuba is a river that many
have found hard to learn and to fish. It’s a river that can
be very picky and at times the fish act like spring creek
fish refusing offerings – leaving anglers in frustration.
Jon Baiocchi and I will lead a small group of anglers along
the river, pointing out access areas, fishing techniques
and working with anglers on the water with casting or
learning new techniques. We will also help anglers with
reading the water and stalking techniques needed for the
very wary Yuba rainbows.
The tour includes handouts, rigging examples, a list of
hatches with fly list and of course our streamside lunch.
The Yuba Tour will be held March 6, 2013; cost per angler
is $145.
Putah Creek Tour
The Putah Creek Tour is a great one day tour to introduce anglers to this great little tailwater fishery. The 4.8 mile tailwater holds monster rainbows. This technical fly-fishing paradise is located just off Highway 505, within easy driving distance from the East Bay and greater Sacramento areas; it’s a fishery that needs to be fished. The tour covers all aspects of the creek; access areas, hatches, equipment, techniques, setups and environmental issues facing this fishery. January 26, 2013 March 7, 2013 March 14, 2013 March 21, 2013 $145 per person
American River Shad Tour
The American River Shad Tour has become one of the most
sought after tours we provide. Last year’s tour was an instant
hit, both with the fishing and the barbeque. This coming year –
we have designed a new tour; limited the number of
participates to six per tour. With two instructors per group
which allows for more one to one instruction and yes, were still
going to have a barbeque for dinner. The shad tour will be
limited too only two tours for the year. So if you would like to
get a heads up on shad fishing the American River this is the
tour for you. Cost per angler is $145.

Lake Almanor Tour
The Lake Almanor Tour is truly for the angler
looking for an edge up on big still water fisheries.
The tour will give you a wealth of knowledge,
based on simple principles for Lake Almanor and
Butt Valley Reservoir. We break down each lake
into easy to understand terms combined with
hands on experience to give the students’
knowledge that is well rounded. We also take the
time to look at creeks that feed these lakes and
areas that hold wild brook, rainbow and brown
trout.
The tour includes Lake Almanor, Butt Valley
Reservoir, Butt Creek, Deer Creek, North Fork of
the Feather River and Warren Creek. It’s a tour
that is a must for anglers wishing to gain a quick
overview of the area and its fisheries.
The tour includes transportation, a
comprehensive handout, a tri-tip dinner on the
beach of Lake Almanor, and lunches for both
days. Cost is $305 per person for this two day
event.
