LandAid’s Foundation Partner Scheme

The property industry charity – together we can do more

About LandAidWe are the charity of the UK property industry. Established originally in 1986 by a group of volunteers

from within the industry, and inspired by Bob Geldof’s LiveAid, LandAid’s aim now is to transform the lives

of the young and disadvantaged by making the most effective use of the property industry’s combined

resources, expertise and influence.

Our mission is to help them access the facilities, skills and opportunities to achieve their potential and

thrive within their local community.

In the last twelve months alone we have committed more than £1 million to establishing the first five

projects under our Foundations for Life initiative, helping to transform the lives of homeless young people.

These include two major developments at the Camberwell Foyer and Bruce House, in partnership with

Centrepoint, which together support the needs of nearly 400 young people in South and Central London.

We have provided new learning facilities with IT suites, healthy living centres and training rooms,

supported by specialist staff delivering a comprehensive range of training and advice programmes.

A further similar project is underway in Birmingham, in partnership with St Basils, which represents an

important milestone in spreading the impact of LandAid’s work outside London; these projects made

possible by the resources of the property industry and delivered in partnership with leading youth

homelessness service providers.

We want to build on these recent achievements, considerably increase our funding, develop the expertise

that we bring to the initiatives and projects we support, and greatly widen the number of lives we touch.

Our ten year goal is to provide a network of dedicated facilities across the whole of the UK, funded or

owned by LandAid, to benefit the young and disadvantaged.

To meet this challenge we are establishing a group of Foundation Partners to ensure that we have the

resources we need to develop our work as the property industry charity to the next level. In reaching our

initial target of 25 partners we can now begin our task in earnest and with confidence. In thanking them

for their support, and their help in shaping our future direction and growth, we look forward to welcoming

others who will now follow their lead as we establish LandAid as a pioneering ‘industry-led’ charity of

which the property sector can be proud.

The Foundation Partner Scheme

The Foundation Partner scheme is central to our plans to develop LandAid as the principal charitable

vehicle of the property industry. We are fully committed to maximising the impact of our industry in

helping the young and disadvantaged, including those who are homeless.

The Foundation Partner scheme aims to provide an effective mechanism through which our corporate

partners can:

Demonstrate their active support for LandAid’s work as the industry charity

Contribute collectively to maximising the industry’s overall charitable impact through LandAid

Join with an influential peer group to help shape LandAid’s direction and growth.

LandAid seeks a commitment of £10,000 a year for three years from each Foundation Partner as the first

step in developing a broader relationship with each of our corporate supporters. We hope that Foundation

Partners will also choose to support LandAid fundraising events, such as Party near the Park and the Fun

Run, encourage individuals within the company to organise and participate in additional fundraising

activities on behalf of LandAid, and to become supporters in their own right. In addition, there will also be

opportunities, for example, to volunteer or offer professional expertise on specific projects; offer a

placement to a young person with an interest in the property industry; or even adopt an individual

LandAid project.

The Foundation Partner Scheme underpins LandAid’s vital work in providing much needed facilities and

specialist support to the young and disadvantaged. It will enable LandAid to help more young people,

support more dynamic charities, fund more deserving projects, bringing the full resource and expertise of

the industry to bear in supporting the good work of the charity sector.

History of LandAid2010 Launch of a new flagship learning centre in Hackney run by leading youth charity

Fairbridge, made possible with a lead gift of £50k from LandAid, to provide activities and services to more than 200 young people.

Work begins on a new centre in Birmingham with youth agency, St Basil’s which will benefit over 20 young residents by providing a dedicated learning and training space.

2009 25 companies from within the property industry back LandAid by becoming inaugural Foundation Partners, each pledging £10,000 over three years.

A fifth Foundations for Life Learning Hub is opened in Central London. Six further projects supported across the UK including the refurbishment of

accommodation for the Canaan Trust in Nottingham and an employment initiative for homeless people run by the Booth Centre in Manchester

2008 The first four Foundations for Life hubs are completed and provide bright airy learning spaces with new computers, teaching kitchens and specialist staff. The young residents can now use the facilities to learn new skills and gain recognised qualifications.

Robin Broadhurst CBE, is welcomed on board as LandAid Chairman. He is also Chairman of Grainger PLC and a Trustee of the Grosvenor Trusts.

2007 LandAid launches ‘Foundations for Life’, a project in partnership with leading young homelessness charity Centrepoint, to provide fully resourced learning hubs where young people can develop the skills they need to transform their lives and live independently.

2005 LandAid moves in with the British Property Federation and a permanent LandAid office is established.

2003 Charismatic Chief Executive of Helical Bar, Mike Slade, becomes LandAid President.

1999 £25,000 raised by 14 volunteers who climb Mount Kenya.

1998 12 intrepid volunteers trek 100km along the Great Wall of China.

1994 LandAid helps establish the Empty Homes Agency with a donation of £50,000.

1988 HRH Prince Edward attends the LandAid Ball which raises £90,000 for Centrepoint and Childhope.

1987 LandAid organises the official ball for the international year of Shelter for the Homeless.

1986 The charity is established and the first ever LandAid Fun Run is organised around Richmond Park, raising almost £40,000 to send a famine relief truck to Sudan.

LandAid donates money raised by the first LandAid Ball to Centrepoint. This marks the beginning of a relationship that continues today.

1985 The idea of LandAid is conceived by volunteers from the property industry, inspired by Sir Bob Geldof’s ‘LiveAid’.

Frequently asked questions

GeneralWhy LandAid? There is great value in an industry-wide body which can develop and promote the effective use of the

industry’s combined resources, expertise and influence for charitable purposes. By working together in

partnership we are able to achieve much more as well as presenting the industry in a good light.

Why support the young and disadvantaged? We have chosen the young and disadvantaged as the specific focus of our support on the basis that they

are a very deserving group who can benefit greatly from the resources that the property industry is able to

offer, particularly in providing the physical environment in which they can thrive. This approach also

embraces and builds on LandAid’s historical links in supporting the homeless.

Why do you focus on the physical environment? We wish to make full use of the unique resources and expertise of the property industry and its capacity to

develop and improve the physical environment in support of charitable causes.

How does LandAid add value? LandAid takes care in identifying projects and initiatives which will make a real difference and only

partners with charities which meet agreed due diligence criteria. Our approach will increasingly be

underpinned by expert research, careful vetting of projects and partner charities, effective use of

resources (to complement other available funding streams), and the close monitoring of outcomes.

Why should we support LandAid rather than give direct to chosen charities? We recognise that companies and individuals will want to support other charities besides LandAid. We

respect the right of companies and individuals to support particular causes or charities of their choice,

indeed we encourage it. One of our goals is to generate a greater level of overall giving within the sector.

As the industry charity, LandAid offers a different type of charitable investment. Our provisional target is

that companies and individuals will in time invest perhaps 25% of their giving through LandAid.

How do you see LandAid’s role developing over the next three years? We will continue to develop LandAid’s role as a significant grant making charity nationally and will

increasingly provide an outlet for the use of the industry’s professional expertise and resources in

delivering effective projects to meet identified charitable needs, for example project management and

volunteering.

What is the new Foundation Partner Scheme?LandAid’s Foundation Partner Scheme allows key property industry organisations to become proactively

involved in Land Aid’s work. It provides an effective mechanism for corporate partners to:

Demonstrate their active support for LandAid’s work as the property industry charity

Contribute collectively to maximising the industry’s overall charitable impact through LandAid

Join with an influential peer group to help shape LandAid’s future direction and growth.

FundraisingHow do you raise funds to support LandAid’s activities?Historically, LandAid has derived a significant part of its funds from events and corporate donations. With

our funding now underpinned by the new Foundation Partner Scheme, LandAid will seek to further grow

its income through a combination of corporate and individual giving and fundraising events.

For example, if our first 25 Foundation Partners each commit to raising a minimum of £10k through

corporate and individual fundraising activities, this would raise at least a further £250,000 a year.

We estimate that there are as many as 250,000 people working either directly or indirectly within the

property industry. If 10% of these can be persuaded to commit an average of as little as £100 a year to

LandAid this would provide a further income of £2.5m. In practice, we are confident that LandAid will also

attract the support of high net worth individuals who will be willing to contribute considerably more to

specific projects.

How much do you hope to raise?LandAid’s turnover has grown from £100k to nearly £1m over the last four years. Our next target is to

raise this first to £2m and then to £5m and well beyond. We are confident that we can make significant

progress over the next 3-5 years, particularly as our work becomes more widely known and appreciated.

We also plan to attract a significant amount of in kind assistance through the provision of resources and

professional expertise for supported projects.

Is it possible to specify how our funds will be used? It is certainly possible, particularly in the case of major donations, for donors to specify that their funds be

associated with a particular programme or project e.g. Foundations for Life. Generally, donors leave this to

the discretion of the LandAid Trustees rather than restrict the purposes for which funds may be used.

LandAid only supports charities or projects which make a real and quantifiable difference in changing the

lives of the young and disadvantaged. Our grant giving policy will be kept under review to ensure that it

continues to reflect the general preferences of supporters across the industry.

Events What events is LandAid involved with?We run a small number of our own LandAid events, currently Party near the Park and the Fun Run.

LandAid is also the ongoing beneficiary of a number of property industry events including Cycle to

Cannes, the Property Race Day, and the Property Week Awards Dinner. We are actively looking to

become the beneficiary of further events. This year, for example, we have been chosen as the beneficiary

of the Movers and Shakers Dinner and the Women in Property Awards Dinner

Thirdly, an increasing number of events or activities are being run by companies or individuals in support

of LandAid (e.g. a company quiz night or participation in a marathon).

Grant ProjectsWhat projects do you currently support? Our grant funding is currently split between our Major Projects programme (of which Foundations for Life

is the first initiative) and our Annual Grants programme for single smaller projects (e.g. Canaan Trust,

Nottingham - accommodation, life skills and career education for the homeless).

What is the background to the Foundations for Life programme? The Foundations for Life programme is a joint initiative in partnership with Centrepoint, the leading youth

homelessness charity. The programme is designed to give young people a route out of exclusion into a

sustainable, self-financing, independent life by offering training in general life and basic education skills,

as well as providing support in gaining entry into work or educational/vocational training. LandAid is

investing, currently in London and Birmingham, in the facilities, courses and expert staff that will enable

the programme to be delivered successfully. We have so far committed more than £1million in support of

the first six projects.

What is next on the agenda? We are committed to developing the range of projects and initiatives we support and to partnering with

further specialist agencies to deliver facilities and opportunities for the young and disadvantaged where

they will achieve the biggest impact. Our recent support of a new flagship activity and learning centre in

Hackney, in association with leading youth charity Fairbridge, is evidence of this.

Over the next twelve months we expect to deliver a minimum of five major projects as well as continuing

our support under the Annual Grants programme. Consideration will be given to supporting youth and

homelessness charities known to individual Foundation Partners.

Communications / PRHow will you keep us informed of LandAid’s work and progress? We achieve this primarily through the newly re-launched LandAid website, a quarterly newsletter and a

monthly e-bulletin, as well as through social media networks such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. We

regard the giving of regular updates on our work and progress to our existing supporters and new

Foundation Partners, and the active promotion of our work to prospective supporters, as a key priority.

We also welcome feedback.

How is the relationship managed? Each Foundation Partner is looked after by the LandAid Relationship Manager, Amanda Keane, including

a 1:1 meeting each year and other dedicated events for Foundation Partners which also provide

networking opportunities.

GovernanceHow is LandAid governed? The charity is led by a Trustee Board made up of senior figures from the industry. Individual Trustees

have board level responsibility for fundraising, grants, events, communications, governance, and finance.

FinanceHow much does it cost to run LandAid?The Board strictly limits the cost of running LandAid. The current annual cost is £250,000 (excluding the

costs of running the two core LandAid events which have their own separate budget). Every effort is

made to keep costs to a minimum through, for example, the use of secondments and other pro bono

support. Office costs are subsidised by the British Property Federation, whose offices LandAid shares.

No expenses are claimed by Trustees.
