IntroductionThe purpose of this document is to provide instructions that allow a LANDesk® Management Suite administrator to install the LANDesk® Management Suite 8, v8.5 Core Server with an Oracle* 8i(8.1.7) database.

ScopeThis document covers the steps necessary to install Oracle 8i(8.1.7) on a Microsoft* Windows* 2000 or 2003 server, steps to create an Oracle instance, steps to create an Oracle database user, and steps to create an Oracle Local Net Service Name. These items are used to install the Management Suite 8, v8.5 Core Server. Database performance tuning is not covered and should be performed by a DBA. This document only covers the information necessary to get the Core Server installed and running with an Oracle 8i database.

AssumptionsThe reader should be familiar with Microsoft Windows 2000 or 2003 server and be able to install the Operating System with all of the necessary prerequisites for the LANDesk Management Suite 8, v8.5 Core Server.

Installing Oracle*8i (8.1.7) on Windows* 2000/2003 This example assumes that Oracle is not already installed. If it is, and you want to create a new instance for LANDesk Management Suite, go to the “Setting Up an Instance and Database” section.

Install the Oracle Server SoftwareInstalling the Oracle server software:

1. Log on to the Windows 2000/2003 server as a member of the Administrators group.

2. Insert the Oracle8i CD into the CD-ROM drive.

3. If the Oracle8i Autorun page comes up, click Install/Deinstall Products. OrRun SETUP.EXE in the root directory of the CD.

The Oracle Universal Installer Welcome window appears.

4. Click Next.

The Oracle Universal Installer File Locations window appears.

5. Accept the defaults and click Next, unless the installation has other requirements.

The Oracle Universal Installer Available Products window appears.

6. Verify that Oracle8i Enterprise Edition 8.1.7.0.0 is selected.

7. Click Next.

The Oracle Universal Installer Installation Types window appears.

8. Click on the Custom radio button.

9. Click Next.

The Oracle Universal Installer Available Product Components window appears.

10. Click on the following components:

Oracle8i Server 8.1.7.0.0

Net8 Products 8.1.7.0.0

Net8 Client 8.1.7.0.0

Net8 Server 8.1.7.0.0

Oracle Names 8.1.7.0.0

Oracle Connection Manager 8.1.7.0.0

11. Click Next.

The Oracle Universal Installer Component Locations window appears.

12. Click Next, unless the installation has other requirements.

The Oracle Universal Installer Create Database window appears.

13. Click No.

14. Click Next.

The Oracle Universal Installer Summary window appears.

15. Click Install.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Welcome window appears.

16. Click on the Perform Typical Configuration option.

17. Click Next.

The Oracle Universal Installer End of Installation window appears.

18. Click Exit.

The Exit window appears.

19. Click Yes to exit the Universal Installer.

NOTE: Skip the next step if the Core Server will not be installed on the database server.

20. Download and install “Oracle8i Release 3 Provider for OLE DB Version 8.1.7.3.0” which is available on Oracle’s website.

NOTE: The only option that needs to be selected is Oracle Provider for OLE DB 8.1.7.3.0.

Setting Up an Instance and DatabaseThe following sections describe steps on how to set up an instance and database.

Create an Instance and DatabaseCreating an instance and database:

1. From the Oracle server, click Start|Programs|Oracle OraHome81| Database Administration|Database Configuration Assistant.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant first window appears.

2. Click on the Create a Database radio button.

3. Click Next.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant second window appears.

4. Click on the Custom radio button.

5. Click Next.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant third window appears.

6. Click on the Multipurpose radio button.

7. Click Next.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant fourth window appears.

8. Type the number of concurrently connected users.

9. Click Next.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant fifth window appears.

10. Click Dedicated Server Mode.

11. Click Next.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant sixth window appears.

12. Click to clear all options.

13. Click Next.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant seventh window appears.

14. Type LDDB in the Global Database Name field.

NOTE: LDDB is used as the Global Database Name for this example. The SID should be the same name as the Global Database Name.

15. Click 8.1.0 from the Compatible Parameter drop-down list.

16. If you want to change the character set from the default WE8ISO8859P1, click Change Character Set.

17. Click on the desired character set.

18. Click OK.

19. Click Next.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant eighth window appears.

20. Click Next.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant ninth window appears.

21. Click on the System tab.

22. Verify that the Unlimited option is selected.

23. Click on the Tools tab.

24. Verify that the Unlimited option is selected.

25. Click on the User tab.

26. Verify that the Unlimited option is selected.

27. Click on the Rollback tab.

28. Verify that the Unlimited option is selected.

29. Click on the Index tab.

30. Verify that the Unlimited option is selected.

31. Click Next.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant tenth window appears.

32. Click Next.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant eleventh window appears.

33. Click Next.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant twelfth window appears.

34. Set the Block Size to 8192.

NOTE: For best performance, the block size selected should match the block size used when formatting the data drive.

35. Set the Log Buffer Size (Bytes) to 163840.

36. Increase the Shared Pool Size (Bytes) and Block Buffers to a larger size, depending on how much memory is available.

37. Click Next.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant thirteenth window appears.

38. Click Next.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant fourteenth window appears.

39. Click on the Create Database Now radio button.

40. Click Finish.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant Alert window appears.

41. Click Yes.

The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant Alert window appears.

42. Click OK.

43. Open the SQLNET.ORA text file located in the C:\ORACLE\ORA81\NETWORK\ADMIN directory (default).

44. Remark out the “SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES=(NTS)” line by adding a # at the beginning of the line.

45. Save the changes to the SQLNET.ORA file.

46. Reboot the server.

Create an Oracle Net8 Alias for the InstanceCreating an Oracle Net8 alias for the instance:

1. Click Start|Programs|Oracle OraHome81|Network Administration|Net8 Configuration Assistant.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Welcome window appears.

2. Click on the Local Net Service Name Configuration option.

3. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration window appears.

4. Click Add.

5. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration, Database Version window appears.

6. Click Oracle 8i database or service.

7. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration, Service Name window appears.

8. Type LDDB in the Service Name field(Service name created previously).NOTE: LDDB is the service name used in this example.

9. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration, Select Protocols window appears.

10. Click TCP.

11. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration, TCP/IP Protocol window appears.

12. Type either the host name or the IP address of the Oracle server in the Host Name field.

13. Click Use the standard port number of 1521.

14. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration, Test window appears.

15. Select No, do not test.

16. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration, Net Service Name window appears.

17. Type LDDBALIAS to identify this service in the Net Service Name field.

NOTE: LDDBALIAS is the net service name used in this example.

18. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration, Another Net Service Name? window appears.

19. Click No.

20. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration Done window appears.

21. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Welcome window appears.

22. Click Finish.

Create a User Who will Own the Tables for the Database

Creating a user who will own the tables for the database:

NOTE: This is the user that must be used when running COREDBUTIL.

1. Click Start|Programs|Oracle OraHome81|Database Administration| Security Manager.

The Oracle Enterprise Manager Login window appears.

2. Type internal in the Username field.

NOTE: You can also log in with the sys or system user account.

3. Type Oracle in the Password field.

4. Type LDDBALIAS in the Service field.

NOTE: LDDBALIAS is the service used in this example that was created previously.

5. Click OK.

The Oracle Security Manager window appears.

6. Right-click on the Users folder.

7. Click Create.

The Create User INTERNAL@LDDBALIAS window appears.

8. Type LDADMIN in the Name field.NOTE: LDADMIN is the username used in this example.

9. Type the password in the Password field.

10. Type the password in the Confirm Password field.

11. Click on USERS from the Default tablespaces drop-down list.

12. Click on TEMP from the Temporary tablespaces drop-down list.

13. Click the System Privileges tab.

14. Double-click on the following privileges in the Available pane:

Create Procedure

Create Sequence

Create Session

Create Table

Create Trigger

Create Type

Create View

Force Transaction

Unlimited Tablespace

NOTE: The privileges selected should now show up in the GRANTED pane.

15. Click Create.

The Oracle Enterprise Manager window appears indicating that the user was created successfully.

16. Click OK.

17. Click File|Exit.

Installing the LANDesk® Management Suite 8, v8.5 Core Server for an Oracle DatabaseThe following sections describe procedures to install the LANDesk® Management Suite 8, v8.5 Core Server for an Oracle database.

Install the Oracle Client on the server that will be the CoreInstalling the Oracle Client on the server that is the core:

NOTE: If the Core Server is being installed on the database server, go to the “Install LANDesk® Management Suite 8, v8.5” procedure.

1. Log on to the Windows 2000/2003 server computer as a member of the Administrators group.

2. Insert the Oracle8i CD in the CD ROM drive.

3. If the Oracle8i Autorun window appears, click Install/Deinstall Products.OrRun SETUP.EXE in the CD's root directory.

The Oracle Universal Installer Welcome window appears.

4. Click Next.

The Oracle Universal Installer File Locations window appears.

5. Accept the defaults and click Next, unless the installation has other requirements.

The Oracle Universal Installer Available Products window appears.

6. Verify that Oracle8i Client 8.1.7.0.0 is selected.

7. Click Next.

The Oracle Universal Installer Installation Types window appears.

8. Click on the Custom radio button.

The Oracle Universal Installer Available Product Components window appears.

10. Click on the following components:

Net8 Products 8.1.7.0.0

Net8 Client 8.1.7.0.0

Oracle Programmer 8.1.7.0.0

Development Tools 8.1.7.0.0

Oracle Call Interface(OCI) 8.1.7.0.0

Oracle ODBC Driver 8.1.7.0.0

Oracle Provider for OLE DB 8.1.7.0.0

11. Click Next.

The Oracle Universal Installer Component Locations window appears.

12. Click Next.

The Oracle Universal Installer Summary window appears.

13. Click Install.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Welcome window appears.

14. Click on the Perform Typical Configuration radio button.

15. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Welcome window appears.

16. Click on the No, I will create net service names myself radio button.

17. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration, Database Version window appears.

18. Click on the Oracle 8i database or service radio button.

19. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration, Service Name window appears.

20. Type LDDB in the Service Name field.

NOTE: LDDB is the service name used in this example and was created previously.

21. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration, Select Protocols window appears.

22. Click TCP.

23. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration, TCP/IP Protocol window appears.

24. Type either the host name or the IP address of the Oracle server in the Host Name field.

25. Click Use the standard port number of 1521.

26. Click Next.

27. Click Next.

28. Type LDDBALIAS in the Net Service Name field.

NOTE: LDDBALIAS is the net service name used in this example.

29. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration, Another Net Service Name? window appears.

30. Click No.

31. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Net Service Name Configuration Done window appears.

32. Click Next.

The Net8 Configuration Assistant: Done window appears.

33. Click Finish.

The Oracle Universal Installer End of Installation window appears.

34. Click Exit.

The Exit window appears.

35. Click Yes to exit the Universal Installer.

36. Open the SQLNET.ORA text file located in the C:\ORACLE\ORA81\NETWORK\ADMIN directory (default).

37. Remark out the “SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES=(NTS)” line by adding a # at the beginning of the line.

38. Save the changes to the SQLNET.ORA file.

39. Download and install “Oracle8i Release 3 Provider for OLE DB Version 8.1.7.3.0” which is available on Oracle’s website.NOTE: The only option that needs to be selected is Oracle Provider for OLE DB 8.1.7.3.0.

Install LANDesk® Management Suite 8, v8.5Installing LANDesk® Management Suite 8, v8.5:

1. Follow the install until you reach the Choose a Database window.

2. Click on the User-Supplied Database radio button.

3. Click Next.

The User-supplied Database Configuration window appears.

4. Click to place a checkmark in the This is an Oracle Database checkbox.

5. Type LDDBALIAS in the TNS Name field.

NOTE: LDDBALIAS is the net service name used in this example which was created previously.

6. Type LDADMIN in the User field.

NOTE: LDADMIN is the user used in this example which was created previously.

7. Type the password for the user in the Password field.

8. Click Next.

9. Finish the Management Suite 8, v8.5 install.

Some issues may require additional assistance from the database vendor or through an approved third party. The database support that LANDesk Software customer support won't provide includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Configuring the DBMS with additional parameters for performance or other reasons

Creating scripts

Configuring an existing DBMS installation to work with Management Suite 8, v8.5

Restricting rights or perform other user maintenance

Backing up the databases

Repairing corrupt databases

If you call LANDesk Software customer support, support personnel will attempt to do the following:

Isolate the problem

Verify that the LANDesk® Management Suite-specified DBMS parameters are correct

Verify that Management Suite 8, v8.5 is working correctly

Verify that Management Suite 8, v8.5 works with MSDE.

If at this point the DBMS still doesn't work, you may need to either reinstall the DBMS or resolve the issue through other means.
