Received March 2, 2005. In Final Form: August 25, 2005

Asymmetrically substituted poly(paraphenylene) (PhPPP) with hydrophilic and hydrophobic side chainswas investigated. The polymer behavior at the air-water interface was studied on the basis of surfacepressure-area (π-A) isotherms and compression/expansion hysteresis measurements. PhPPP can formstable monolayers with an area per repeat unit of A ) 0.20 ( 0.02 nm2 and a collapse pressure in the rangeof π ) 25 mN/m. Then, Langmuir-Blodgett-Kuhn (LBK) films of PhPPP were prepared by horizontallyand vertically transferring the Langmuir monolayers onto hydrophilic solid substrates at π ) 12 mN/m.Cross-section analysis of the AFM tapping-mode topography images of a single transferred monolayerreveals a thickness of d0 ) 0.9 ( 0.1 nm. Taking into account the obtained monolayer thickness, curve-fitting calculations of angular scan data of LB monolayers measured using surface plasmon resonance(SPR) spectroscopy lead to a value for the refractive index of n ) 1.78 ( 0.02 at λ ) 632.8 nm. Next, thespontaneous formation of a PhPPP monolayer by adsorption from solution was studied ex situ by atomicforce microscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy and in situ by using SPR spectroscopy. Stable self-assembledmonolayers of PhPPP can be formed on hydrophilic surfaces with a thickness similar to that of the monolayerobtained using the LB method. The characterization results confirmed the amphiphilic character and theself-assembly properties of PhPPP, as well as the possibility of preparing homogeneous monolayer andmultilayer films.

1. IntroductionConjugated polymer systems have been the focus of

research for many years. A large number of polyconjugatedsystems such as poly(aniline) (PANI), poly(thiophene)(PT), poly(paraphenylene) (PPP), etc., were studied mostlyin the form of thin films.1 Electronic devices made fromconjugated systems have a great potential for technicalapplications.2 Several examples such as light-emittingdiodes (LED),3,4 photodetectors,5 and transistors6,7 havebeen demonstrated.

Further advances in the field of nanotechnology haveled to the fabrication of various molecular devices andmodules based on monomolecular arrays of functionalmolecules.8,9 Along these lines, full control of the orga-nization of the molecules in a film at the molecular levelis mandatory.10,11 Introducing functional groups as am-

phiphilic side chains into a molecular structure gives itself-organizingproperties.12 Forexample, thehydrophilic-hydrophobic structure of an amphiphilic molecule makesit energetically advantageous to reside at the air-waterinterface. The molecules are “trapped” at the interface, and if many of these molecules assemble in this way, theresult is an oriented layer, inherently one molecule thick. With this kind of molecular organization, one can applytypical supramolecular fabrication techniques such as theLangmuir-Blodgett-Kuhn (LBK) technique and thespontaneous self-assembly process for monolayer fabrica-tion. With this approach, thin films with good control overthe degree of ordering, film thickness, and hence func-tionality can be obtained.

Recently, we reported on the synthesis and character-ization of asymmetrically substituted poly(p-phenylene)(PhPPP) with an alkyl chain (C12H25) in the 2-positionand a hydroxy (OH) group attached in the para position.13

This polymer combines conjugation and amphiphilicitywith OH as a hydrophilic side chain and an alkyl moietyas a hydrophobic side chain, and it is therefore a primecandidate for the formation of ordered thin films ofconjugated polymers. The spontaneous adsorption ofsymmetrically substituted PPP on copper and gold sub-strates has been reported by Brunner et al.,14 and theadsorption of highly charged substituted PPP from an
