Bloodwasdrippingdownontothesnowfromthebottomofhisshirt.Idon’tactuallyknowalotaboutsnow– ormuchelse,forthatmatter– butI’vereadthatsnowcrystalsformedwhenit’sreallycoldarecompletelydifferentfromwetsnow,heavyflakes,orthecrunchystuff.Thatit’stheshapeofthecrystalsandthedrynessofthesnowthatmakethehaemoglobin inthebloodretainthatdeepredcolour.Eitherway,thesnowunderhimmademethinkofaking’srobe,allpurpleandlinedwithermine,likethedrawingsinthebookofNorwegianfolktalesmymotherusedtoreadtome.Shelikedfairytalesandkings.That’sprobablywhyshenamedmeafteraking.
