PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

NEW ZEALAND VISIT On Monday this week I was very proud to join with Sarah Roney, our Positive Education Leader and Taylah Corkery, one of our School Captains, to showcase our school to visiting teachers and principals from Farm Cove Intermediate School in Auckland, New Zealand. They were interested to see how THRIVE was operating and had many questions about its implementation and how the classroom and playground programs were being run. They spoke to both our teachers and our students and were particularly interested in watching a Play Leaders session at lunchtime. It was terrific to once again see and hear about the wonderful work that we are doing in this area at LPPS. The Langwarrin Pos Ed Cluster of Schools has much to be proud of and we look forward to future visits from other interested groups.

TOURS AND ENROLMENTS We have started the process of school tours for our 2020 enrolments. If you have a child entering Foundation next year please join us on one of the scheduled dates or phone the school if these are not suitable. We have a special evening tour scheduled for Monday 27 May at 6pm. Happy Mother’s Day to all of our wonderful Mums and Carers – we hope that Sunday is very special for you.

URGENT REQUEST We are extremely fortunate at Langwarrin Park Primary School to have additional facilities on our school grounds, in particular our school pool. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL NAPLAN

From the 14th-16th May, our Grade 3 and 5 students will be undertaking the NAPLAN testing. There is always quite a considerable

amount of scrutiny placed on NAPLAN. As a school we do place an importance on NAPLAN, because like other forms of assessment it

provides:

evidence on the current achievement levels for our students in reading, writing, grammar and punctuation and numeracy and

a clear direction for our school leadership team on what future planning needs to take place to better support effective teaching

and learning in our school.

We do not ‘teach to the test’. Our teachers do take the time to familiarise students with the style of the NAPLAN test. If you have a child

(ren) in Grade 3 or 5, it is important that if there is anxiety or distress displayed by your child, provide re-assurance and a positive

outlook. Like any other assessment, all we ask of our students, is that they approach this testing with a positive attitude and a

willingness to try their best. For further ideas on how you can support your child with NAPLAN, please click on the link below.

Our school receives NAPLAN results later in the year (mid August-mid September). We will notify Grade 3 and 5 parents when the

student reports will be sent home.

ATTITUDES TO SCHOOL SURVEY Providing students with a voice on different aspects of their learning, is an effective way to improve student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction. The Attitudes to School Survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Students from Years 4 to 6 will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a secured online survey tool and only takes around 20 minutes to complete. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during, or after completion of the survey. Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. All responses to the survey are kept anonymous in the response file. This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school later in Term 2 and will be facilitated by Mrs Webster, Ms Haddow and Mr Barren. Our school uses the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's learning experiences. The survey results will be reported back to the school later in the school year. All survey data that is made available in reports are for groups of students only, so that no individual student can be identified. Our school leadership teams, uses the survey results to review and improve the teaching and learning program for our teachers and students. If you would like more information, please speak to your child’s teacher or visit: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/management/improvement/Pages/performsurveyat.aspx

SCHOOL UNIFORM RESULTS SCHOOL UNIFORM REVIEW SURVEY Firstly, a huge thank you to all the families who took the time to respond to the uniform review survey. The response from the school community was very pleasing. The Working Party has reviewed the data collected and it will now go to School Council at the next meeting for further discussion. As soon as further information is available, the school community will be notified. But, in the meantime, we thought you might like to have a look at the data. As you can see from the following graphs, it was overwhelmingly positive.

WELLBEING Langwarrin Park is a child safe school

THRIVE—POSITIVE EDUCATION TRY your best Be HEALTHY RELATE well Get INVOLVED Live your VALUES ENJOY positive emotions

Our THRIVE value for this term is RELATE WELL. We are looking for students who are showing respect, getting to know

others and including peers in and out of the classroom. These students are then rewarded with a raffle ticket and awards are presented at assembly each fortnight. Last Assembly we congratulated the following students: Rees F. (6/6), Alyssa A. (4/27), Brianna S. (1/18), Abby W. (Prep 4), Marcus E. (5/14) and Cali M (2/30). We also recognise each term awards for exceptional effort and these have a small prize associated with them. For THRIVE outstanding classroom effort: Brodie C. (6/9), Rachael S. (5/10), Patience C. (5/14), Harmonei C. (5/10), Lula L. (6/07) and Zoe B. (6/07). BREAKFAST CLUB

Breakfast Club is going well. We operate from 8.15am to 8.45am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. We are supplied with cereal and fruit. Presently we are offering baked beans on a Monday morning also. Generally we have about 30 smiling faces each morning and it is run by Deb Haddow, Luana Lane and some of our integration aides who volunteer their time. CAN YOU ASSIST US? We are looking for donations of loaves of sliced bread. We currently use 10 loaves a week for toast and then some extra to make sandwiches. If you know of a bakery/business that could help us out that would be most appreciated. We have a chest freezer now, so we were collecting our donation in one stop, freezing it and using it as required. Let us know if you have any contacts. Also if you would like to volunteer one of the mornings each week speak with Deb Haddow. PLAY LEADERS

Our Play Leaders have been

busy out in the playground

running organised games for all

students! It is always a fun and

exciting time with many happy

faces! Students from Prep—

YEAR 1 WRITING EXPO The Year 1 children held an exciting WRITING EXPO in the last week of Term 1. Every child had been working hard throughout Term 1 to create clever descriptive writing pieces to share with their family and friends. We celebrated their growth and achievements by inviting parents, grandparents and special friends to come and hear the children read their published work. What a fantastic celebration of very clever authors! Year One Team

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CONGRATULATIONS – TYLER HUNTER (6/6) Tyler is currently trying out for the School Sport Victoria Under 12’s State Cricket team. Last term, Tyler played in a practise match against students from other schools who had also progressed through to the next stage. Tyler once again impressed the selectors with his skills and as a result has now reached the final selection stage of the process. In the Term 2 holidays, Tyler will be one of 54 players in the final squad. Tyler is also trialling for the School Sport Victoria State Football team. He has already made it through the first selection trial and will be taking part in the second round on Monday 13th May. We wish Tyler all the best and look forward to reporting on his progress. HOUSE ATHLETICS SPORTS – WHAT A GREAT DAY! The Year 3 – 6 annual House Athletics carnival was held at Ballam Park on the last Wednesday of Term One. Once again the students had a wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed dressing in their House colours, participating in the different events and supporting one another. The success of the day was largely due to the team work of parents, teachers and students. Thank you to all the parents who assisted the teachers with officiating duties: Dianne Aedy (Olivia 4/19), Peta Bailey (Jayde 3/25, Amber 6/5), Claire Bray (Alby 3/16), Kevin Campbell (Brodie 6/9), Mandy Charles (Ali 3/22), Mark Cosgriff (Ky 4/27), Vikki Doyle (Noah 5/11, Hayden 5/12), Ester Head (Danika 3/24, Aaron 6/9), Deb Healy (Alex 4/26), Renee Mayers (Holly 5/11, Will 6/5), Kerry McInerney (Josh 3/25, Luke 3/24), Matilda Pretorius (Waldo 5/12), Narelle Richmond (Max 4/20), Greg Rodriquez (Aidan 4/19), Melanie Schmidt (Connor 3/16), Gary Squires (Charlie 4/20), Vanessa Taylor (Asha 4/19, Cooper 6/6), Suzy Vowels (Sophie 5/11), Laura Wever (Rhys 3/16). PHYSICAL EDUCATION HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic and eager students with House Coloured shirts/tops, ready to tackle the Cross Country Course. Parents, teachers and students cheered on all competitors as they ran the course. Some students finished the race with smiles on their faces, whilst others showed exhaustion or relief. The most rewarding thing was to see so many students participating and giving it their best to complete the course. Not everyone can be in the top 10, but everyone is a winner when they give 100%.

Thank you to all the parents who provided valuable support and encouragement for all competitors as well as greatly assisting me with handing out of wrist bands, timing, place-judging and data entry. Special mention to Melanie Schmidt (Connor) who “willingly” stayed for the entire time to assist with recording. It is also important to mention the role of the House Captains and Vice Captains. They assisted with the set up and pack up of the course. In the younger age group races they scattered themselves around the course to cheer on the competitors, providing them with encouragement and assistance for some students who were at times a little distressed. Students who qualify for the school team will be competing at Hastings Foreshore on Monday 27th May. Money and consent forms are to be returned by Monday 20th May. Training is Tuesday and Thursday, 8:00 am – 8:45 am. Students who make the team are expected to train at least 1 early morning session a week. Training is open to all students in Years 3 – 6. PHYSICAL EDUCATION WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY – FRIDAY 17TH MAY Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, national event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. The objectives of WSTSD are: To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce

safe pedestrian behaviour. To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age. To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road. To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians. To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change as children

become adults. To promote the use of Public Transport. To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles. To reduce the level of traffic congestion. So, why not get up half an hour earlier, enjoy the free air and participate in the Walk Safely to School Day. Sue Burt / Franca Peluso

the Year 6s. The raffle is to encourage students to converse in Indonesian

outside of class time. Whenever you see a Year 6 leader dressed up in

Indonesian clothing, go up and speak to them in Indonesian and they will give

you a raffle ticket! The raffle prizes have all been imported from Indonesia and

we are very excited to draw the first raffle at the next assembly.

In other news, the Year 2’s have been learning about Sayuran (vegetables) and singing a very catchy song to help learn the names. You can hear the song on Youtube by visiting this link: https://youtu.be/fzNyD1qbUKw Bu S LOTE Teacher
