week.EPA officials and the

county health departmenthave repeatedly said no oneis in danger.

“There were three prop-erties affected,” Lippertsaid. “It was easily identifi-able because you could seeyellow snow from the fire-suppression water.”

But some nearby resi-dents are still concernedand want the EPA toprovide more proof thatthe nearby soil and watersources have not beencontaminated.

“We don’t tend to playin our yard anymore,” saidTari Gray, 30, who lives be-hind Adams Plating withher 2-year-old son. “Wedrink bottled water andcook with bottled water, just to be safe because wedon’t know.”

Meeting plannedThe EPA briefly thought

last week the project wouldhave to be delayed becauseof confusion over whetherthe money was availablefor the project.

The agency sent out ane-mail Feb. 25 stating thatthe cleanup would be de-layed due to lack of funds.

Officials corrected them-selves later that day.

“Everything is in place, and we’re ready to go,” Lip-pert said Friday.

The EPA will host acommunity meeting mid-way through the projectto update nearby residentsand business owners.

‘It’s a travesty’Jim Beecham, owner of

Vette Customs Inc. on Rose-mary, said he’s sad to seeAdams Plating come to anend.

The business closed af-ter the fire.

“It’s a travesty,” said Bee-cham, 66. “It’s life-damagingto some real hardworkingpeople at Adams.”

The owner of the com-pany, Stephen Adams, wasseriously injured in the firebut since has been releasedfrom the hospital.

LANSING TWP. —Cleanup began Monday,Feb. 28 at the former Ad-ams Plating Co. site onRosemary Street, twomonths after a fire de-stroyed the business andsparked chemical contami-nation concerns.

The Environmental Pro-tection Agency said theproject will take eight to12 weeks and cost around$450,000.

The bulk of the cost isnot for the actual cleanupor excavation of what re-mains of the building, butfor the handling and dis-posal of the chemicals thatare still on site, said JeffLippert, on-scene coordina-tor for the EPA.

Adams Plating wasknown to use hexavalantchromium, cyanide andnickel in its electroplatingprocess.

“We have to collectsamples, send them to thelab and find out exactlywhere to properly disposeof them,” Lippert said.

The site at 521 Rose-mary St. had been home toAdams Plating since 1964.

The business was de-stroyed by fire Dec. 27,sparking contaminationfears because chemicals in-side the building were re-leased into the air and onthe ground with water run-off.

Two homes were brieflyevacuated after the fire, and Rosemary Street wasclosed for more than a

sidy from the rest of thecollege.

“We don’t wish all stu-dents to bear that burden,”Knight said.

He gave a similar ratio-nale for the proposal toclose the swimming pooland the aquatics classestaught there.

Costly repairsThe pool “needs to be

completely rebuilt from thedirt through roof,” Knightsaid. To do so would cost

$5 million to $7 million. Hedoesn’t want the entire stu-dent body to pay for a facil-ity used only by a few.

News of the proposalstill hadn’t reached some ofthe college’s faculty mem-bers by the afternoon ofFeb. 24. Several who hadheard about it said they stillwere trying to absorb whatit would mean.

“It’s devastating, to apoint,” said Gordon Belt, interim chairman of thetransportation maintenancetechnologies program, which includes both avia-tion and auto repair.

“I think it’s going to catchsome people by surprise, but I trust the college ad-ministration and I know theprocess they have in placeis going to give people a

chance to comment.”Faculty, students and

other members of the col-lege community will have30 days to respond to theproposal. LCC officials saythey hope to make a finaldecision by mid-April. Thechanges would not requirethe approval of the college’sBoard of Trustees.

If the cuts do go through, students now enrolled in theaffected programs wouldhave until the spring of 2012to finish their programs.

In the meantime, Shanb-latt said she is open to “com-pelling arguments, greatideas. This is not set instone.”

“Just because there is aconstituency for a program, though, is not enough forme to change my mind.”

Lansing Community Col-lege’s leaders want toground the college’s flightschool, end its truck drivertraining program, mothballthe swim-ming pool, and eliminateprograms inauto and col-lision repair.

On Feb.24, the col-lege’s admin-i s t r a t i o np r e s e n t e dfaculty with a proposal toend nine academic programsand scale back, combine orretool more than a dozenothers. In all, 17 degrees and36 certificates now offeredby LCC would be eliminat-ed.

It is the end result of a14-month process meant toidentify programs that costtoo much, that serve too fewstudents or serve them poor-ly, or that simply aren’t inline with the demands of the21st century economy.

College leaders say theprogram review was not abudget exercise, but an ef-fort to ensure that studentsat LCC don’t spend theirtime and money earning de-grees that won’t get them farin the job market.

“We no longer wish to of-fer programs that don’t leadto employment at a goodwage,” LCC President BrentKnight said.

And so the college’s trav-el agency operations certifi-cate would go away. Classessuch as “Introduction to Mi-crosoft Word” and begin-ning pool (the game withcues, balls and a felt-cov-ered table) would migrateto the community educationdepartment, where studentswouldn’t get college creditfor taking them and couldn’tuse financial aid to pay forthem.

The proposal is as muchabout restructuring as it iscuts. In place of auto and col-lision repair, LCC’s leadershave proposed two “acade-my-style” programs focusedon electric hybrid vehiclesand computer diagnostics.

‘High-skill jobs’

LCC Provost StephanieShanblatt said the goal is“ratcheting up the skill lev-el from what used to bethe 1970s, high school vo-cational education to truehigh-skill jobs.”

Patrick Murphy, a first-year student studying autorepair, said he doesn’t seewhy the basic classes haveto be eliminated to makeroom for the courses onhybrids and computer sys-tems.

“That’s what everythingis going to now,” he said,“but it still isn’t right forthem to eliminate every-thing else.”

Cost was a factor indeciding which programsmight be cut, even if itwasn’t the only one. Theaviation program, for ex-ample, cost $500,000 morethan it brought in last year.In effect, each of its 78 stu-dents received a $6,400 sub-

s Business incubator toopen soon on north side

Marketing and media technology start-ups should begin moving into a new busi-ness incubator in north Lansing by June.

A couple of tenants already are lined upfor the Center for New Enterprise Oppor-tunity, or NEO Center business incubatorat 934 Clark St., between Grand River andOakland avenues.

RenovationsThe Ingham County Land Bank pur-

chased the 6,920-square-foot two-storybuilding in summer 2009 for $11,309 after itwent into tax foreclosure.

The Land Bank recently sold the proper-ty for $45,000 to RKH Investments LLC, as-sociated with East Lansing-based KincaidHenry Building Group Inc.

Kincaid Henry is renovating the buildingand will relocate its headquarters there by

June or July. The company and its 10 em-ployees plan to occupy about half of thebuilding.

The project goes along with the com-pany’s experience in repurposing existingbuildings, CEO Ryan Kincaid said.

“And the opportunity to grow small busi-nesses with an incubator — it’s a great op-portunity and it’s what Lansing needs,” hesaid.

Subleasing spacesThe company would lease space to the

NEO Center, which would then subleasework spaces to office tenants for about $180to $450 a month, said Tom Stewart, the cen-ter’s president.

Lansing-based social media consulting firmUZoom Media will be among the first officetenants, Stewart said.

About 500 square feet of co-workingspace also will be available to students for$50 a month or to the general public for$100 a month.

The NEO Center is run by a seven-mem-ber board of local business and communityleaders.

portable classrooms outsidethe main building. They don’tlunch with or share classeswith any of the little kids, but older students read withyounger kids and help themout as safety patrollers.

More Pleasant View sixth-and seventh-graders weredeemed proficient in readingand math on statewideMichigan Educational As-sessment Program tests in2009 than sixth-and seventh-graders at Otto, Pattengill,Gardner and Dwight Rich. However, eighth-graders per-formed slightly lower in mathand about the same in read-ing.

Principal Madeline Shana-han said many parents likethe setup because their old-er and younger kids are inthe same building. It’s sim-pler and easier to drop kidsoff, pick them up and keeptrack of where they are.

Many of the eighth-grad-ers have been at PleasantView since they were in kin-dergarten, Assistant Princi-pal Boku Hendrickson said.He said he and Shanahanknow each child by name.

“We really believe thewhole relationship part is soimportant,” he said. “Theyfeel comfortable that some-body knows them.”

That’s also a hallmark atOur Savior Lutheran Schoolin Delta Township, whichserves 210 kids in pre-kinder-garten through eighth grade.

“Catholic and Lutheranschools, it’s who we are andwhat we do,” said Jim Land-skroener, principal at OurSavior Lutheran. A numberof local charter schools alsoare K-8.

More advantagesLandskroener said he

feels there are more advan-tages than disadvantages tohaving older and younger

kids in the same building.“I heard that some parents

said they were concernedabout older kids bullying theyounger ones,” he said. Butif bullying occurs, he said,it usually occurs among kidsin the same grade or gradesthat are close together.

Instead, he said the olderand younger kids help modi-fy each others’ behavior.

“Our eighth-graders, wereally put a big responsibilityon them to be leaders in theschool,” Landskroener said.“They know that the otherkids look up to them andwant to emulate them.”

He said older kids whoare doing something theyshouldn’t will stop the be-havior if they know youngerkids are watching.

He said older kids alsoserve as mentors to youngerkids.

“There are a lot of thingsabout it that really work,” hesaid.

The bellows of half-sizecellos and squeals fromsmall violins and violasspilled from Room 109 Tues-day afternoon, March 1 atLansing’s Post Oak Elemen-tary.

Thirty half-size string in-struments were handed tofourth-graders to practiceduring a special lesson byMichigan State UniversityCommunity Music Schoolstaff and College of Musicstudents.

Many of the fourth-grad-ers had never handled astring instrument before,Post Oak music teacher Di-ane Singletary said.

“I saw kids in here thatnormally don’t respond toanything just brighten,” Sin-gletary said about the les-son. “I want to turn them onto music and what possibil-ities are out there. There’sopportunities all over theplace.”

The Post Oak lesson wasone of four stops made byMSU students and staff aspart of Music in our SchoolsMonth.

A $1,500 grant from theCity of Lansing Arts andCultural Minigrant Programmade the lessons possible, said Amanda Darche, spokeswoman for the MSUCommunity Music School, the outreach division of theCollege of Music.

The instruments wererented at half-price fromShar Music in Ann Arbor.

Darche said the grantwas written specifically toteach string instruments tofourth-graders.

“String instruments areone of the earliest instru-ments a child can play,”Darche said.

Ten-year-old Yusin Pheepicked up a violin for thefirst time March 1, but hesaid he has played the cel-lo.

“A violin is smaller andit was sort of difficult,” hesaid.

Students learned the ba-sics of string instruments, such as how to hold thebow correctly and how toplace the fingers on the in-strument.

“We know that there areskills that are acquiredthrough music studies,”Darche said, “and everychild should have the op-portunity to learn music.”
