It was a starry night in Infinityville. The whole gang had gathered at Yolanda’s house to watch the New Year’s Eve special on television. “Oh! The clothes those television stars wear are always so fabulous,” sighed Yolanda Llamas. “I want to be a star and wearthem too.”“My dream is to be a superstar pastry chef and to own a big shop making beautiful cakes,” said Christina.Leonard gave his gigantic grin and said, “I want to be an all-star basketball player and win the championship.”

Era una noche estrellada en Infinityville. Toda la pandilla se había reunido en la casa de Yolanda para ver el especial de Año Nuevo en la televisión. “¡Ah! Yolanda’s dad heard them talking and walked into the room, “You know kids, there are other kinds of stars, too.”“Really, Dad?” Yolanda asked. She knew he had something special to tell them. Christina was very curious, “What kind, Mr. Llamas?”“Yes, Mr. Llamas, please tell us,” Leonard responded.

Mr. Llamas led everyone into the backyard, “Kids, look up at the sky.”“Wow!” Christina opened her eyes wide in surprise.“Yes, of course. The real stars are in the sky,” Leonard laughed.“Dad, they’re so beautiful. I wish I could wear them,” said Yolanda, dreaming of having a dress made of sparkling stars.

“Stars are not only beautiful, they’re useful,” said Mr. Llamas. “For thousands of years people have told the time and known the seasons by watching stars move across the sky. The Maya people of Central America and Mexico used the heavens to create a calendar very much like the one we have today. The calendar showed when to plant and harvest their crops.”“It’s amazing how people learn so much from watching the stars!” exclaimed Leonard.

“Las estrellas no solo son bellas, sino que también son útiles”, dijo el Sr. Llamas. “Por miles de años la gente ha predicho la hora y las estaciones viendo las estrellas moverse a través del cielo. “Did you know that stars help us during the day, too?” said Yolanda.“Really?” Christina wondered.“Yes,” Yolanda said. She liked sharing what she knew. “The sun is a star, and we can tell time using it. For my school science project, Dad helped me make a sundial. As the sun moves across the sky, its shadow points to the numbers on the dial the way the hands point to thenumbers on our clocks.”

“¿Sabían que las estrellas también nos ayudan durante el día?”, dijo Yolanda.“¿Deberás?”, preguntó Cristina.“Sí”, dijo Yolanda. “Stars are really interesting,” Leonard said. “I wish we could see even more.”“That would be great,” Christina agreed.“The bright lights on signs, buildings, and street lights in the city hide many of the stars,” said Mr. Llamas. “Let’s drive into the country and you’ll be surprised at how many more stars you can see.”“We are going now, Dad?” Yolanda asked. “That would be wonderful!”

Mr. Llamas steered the car down a country road. “Kids, stars are helpful in other ways,” he explained. “Migrating birds use stars to guide them on the long flights between their summerand winter homes.”Leonard added, “And people all over the world use stars to navigate. I wrote a report for school about people of the Pacific islands. They use stars to sail from island to island.”

After Mr. Llamas parked, everyone followed him into the middle of a field.“Fantastic!” Christina said. “There are lots more stars now.”Yolanda pointed at the sky, “That’s the North Star. Right Dad?”“Yes, it’s also called the Pole Star,” said. Mr. Llamas. “It’s the only star in the northern hemisphere that doesn’t move. You can use it to find your way like we use a compass and map.”

And that bright red light is Mars. Aside from stars, you can also see planets in the night sky.”

“Now, let’s go to the planetarium!” said Mr. Llamas. “Tonight they are having a New Year’s star gazing event and we can see stars up close.”“Great idea, Dad!” said Yolanda and they headed to the planetarium.“Wow!” Leonard exclaimed, looking through the large telescope at the planetarium. “You were right, Mr. Llamas. This makes everything in the sky look so much bigger, brighter, and sharper.”Christina looked through the telescope next, “That planet has rings around it. It’s Saturn, isn’t it?”“Yes,” Mr. Llamas responded, “it’s the second largest planet.”

“¡Ahora, vamos al planetario!”, dijo el Sr. Llamas. “Esta noche hay un evento de observación de estrellas de Año Nuevo, y podremos ver las estrellas de cerca”.“¡Que gran idea, papá!”, dijo Yolanda y se dirigieron al planetario.“¡Guau!”, exclamó Leonardo mirando a través de un gran telescopio en el planetario. “Tenía razón, Sr. Llamas. On the way home, everyone thanked Yolanda’s dad for surprising them with a wonderful New Year’s Eve.Christina pointed to the sky again, “Look at that bright streak of light.”“It’s a shooting star,” Yolanda said.“Let’s wish on it,” Leonard added, excited.Mr. Llamas smiled. “That’s not a star. It’s a meteor, a piece of rock from outer space. It becomes hot falling through the Earth’s atmosphere and starts to glow. But you can still wish on it, kids.”

Looking up, Leonard said, “I wish I could be an all-star basketball player and win the championship.”“And I wish to be a superstar pastry chef, to own a big pastry shop, and make the most beautiful cakes in the world,” Christina said.Lastly, Yolanda said, “I wish I could be an astronomer, a scientist who studies the stars and planets, like my dad. And I want to wear beautiful clothes when I tell everyone all about them on television. That way I’ll be a TV star, a fashion star, and a science star!”And they all laughed with their starry smiles.

Leonardo dijo mirando así arriba: “Yo deseo ser un jugador estrella de baloncesto y ganar el campeonato”.“Y yo deseo ser una pastelera superestrella, tener una gran tienda y hacer los pasteles más hermosos del mundo”, dijo Cristina.Finalmente Yolanda dijo: “Yo deseo ser una astrónoma, una científica que estudia las estrellas y los planetas, como mi papá.
