Merry Christmas Everyone!

T h is ye a r’ s T h a n k s g i v i n g /Christmas combo party will be December 13th, which also happens to be on a Friday the 13th. Are any of you superstitious? I mean it’s something to think of, right? Or I could just be screwing with y’all. Same place and time as la st year’s party. Bourbon Grill was good to us last year, so I booked them early, like this past summer early. Menu will be steak or fish or chicken or something vegetarian. Cost is $26/person and the chapter will pick up part of this cost for our members. Reserve @ [email protected].

Welcome to our new Secretary As some of you may have guessed, Nina was only doing me a BIG FREAKING FAVOR by being the Chapter Secretary this past year. I put out an email requesting someone to replace her and I got a volunteer. Thank you Carl Siel. Nina says THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, & THANK YOU! It appears that she never enjoyed the meetings. Go figure.

Gonna have a Ride card in 2020 Hopefully this will increase participation in our monthly rides. We spent countless hours hashing and rehashing these rides and we think we’ve come up with some good rides for the New Year. First and foremost is my January 1st ride to Las Vegas for lunch. It’s a Polar Bear Ride. There’s also a ride to Cuba and El Brunos. Oh yeah, Pie Town will happen. You can see the others when the card is finally finished.

Time to renew your membership YES, YOU HAVE TO DO THIS YEARLY ON THE FIRST OF THE YEAR! Over the years members have told me that the Chapter Membership should renew at the same time as the National Membership. This cannot happen. HOG’s National Memberships are based on yearly, multi-year, and lifetime memberships AND is based on the month you joined HOG National. That would be a total nightmare of our membership guru, the lovely Carolyn Besch. In the past we gave members until Feb. 15th to rejoin, but that just delayed everything. On January 15, 2020, any member that has not renewed, will be removed from the email list. This new policy is more in line with HOG’s requirement of January 1st renewals. Rob, the esteemed Editor of this rag has made it easy for you to renew. Each month, he includes a membership application.

Green and Red So, you may think the colors I’ve used in this edition of Lies & B.S. is a Christmas thing, and you may be right. When I started this missive, I had just finished a beef with someone in the bar of a favorite restaurant over which is better. I like GREEN, always have, and he liked RED and he was insistent that I switch over. I was sober, he was not. So, for me to calm him down a bit, I told him next time I ordered the enchiladas, I’d order them with CHRISTMAS, just to make him happy. It did, and I left. Both of us were happy. Just another strange encounter in the life of Scoop!

David’s Corner December 2019

Hindsight is 2020 Here we are on the last month of 2019. Both Debby and I are excited for the 2020 year. We feel this year is going to have vision (I just had too...). We hope you all have managed a few wonderful adventures, interacted with some great people and found personal satisfactions in your activities. We both love the stories that are generated from those around us and especially from the SDC HOG. Debby and I are in Vermont these last few days packing up a few things to bring back to Santa Fe. As a few of you know, we sold our business in Vermont and are looking forward to being in New Mexico on a more regular basis. We looked back over 12 years and over 4000 motorcycles and were humbled by the experience. After some more packing and a glass of wine, we started counting and realized this was our 11th house packing in 13 years of marriage. I asked if that made us "roadies" (‘cause that would be cool). As the year changes and 2020 rushes in - perhaps we should all exercise a little "Hindsight is 2020" discussion. In hindsight things are obvious that were not obvious from the outset; one is able to evaluate past choices more clearly than at the time of the choice. While we cannot change those past choices, they can help us in making future decisions. These range from our gear choices on what would seem a beautiful day to our choices in friends, jobs and of course motorcycles. Racing these last few years has certainly caused me to look back on the decisions I made, my failures, my mistakes and my success's. We are all connected by this thing called a motorcycle. It is one of our choices in life. Many people would argue it is nothing more than metals and liquids. We know it has soul and emotion. How you use this machine is also your choice. Take a look back and your riding and question a few things. I found some realizations: Riding by myself is OK - I enjoy the moments of solitude - the clarity of thinking. Every charity ride I did this year reminded me of the fact so many of us choose to ride for good. For Family. For Love. Racing has re-fired my competitive spirit - although I should re-consider what that looks like. In hindsight, I did not ride enough with my wife this year, I plan to change that for 2020. What do you plan to change? This next year is going to be an adventure in so many ways. We hope you look back and then choose wisely. See you all in 2020 or Sooner, David Pearson

Editor’s Note: I have known David and Debby as Owners in both places. Their Green Mountain Harley dealership was where I bought my 1st Harley in 2013. They had a staff there that was so welcoming and treated me with great professionalism and made me feel like family. As hands-on Owners, I can fully understand how this decision was not an easy one. I have been treated by SFH-D staff with the same professionalism and family atmosphere. I firmly believe it is because of the leadership of David and Debby. I am so glad they chose to come back to Santa Fe for their continued HD future.

Safety Officer Bob, Bob, Bob’s Safety Corner Message: Winterizing your motorcycle Cooler temperatures may put a frown on your face and as a rider you can start to see the motorcycling season is winding down. Generally, though, for most riders the season ends in late October or early November and on this last statement Mother Nature has changed her mind several times so just go with the flow. I guess we can say that it is time to think about winterizing your motorcycle. I hope to give you some helpful tips to guide you along. Think about where you can store your motorcycle. Hell, take your bike out for one more ride. Top off your tank with fresh gas before you get home. Add some fuel stabilizer with the suggested amount, start the bike and let the stabilizer cycle through the system. Change your oil and filter and check your air filter, clean and replace it. Certainly, check your brake pads, tires and belt or chain for wear. Take the battery out and store it at room temperature in a dry place. Fill tires to the proper level. Wash your bike very well to remove the bugs, dirt and road grime. Remember to wax the paint and chrome leaving a coat of wax on the motorcycle. For your leather seats and other leather parts of your bike, treat them too. Close off any openings with tape or cloth to hopefully keep those mice critters from chowing down on the wiring system. Protect your bike with a cover if it is left outside or even if in the garage. A few words for the wise if you do not winterize your bike by the time spring arrives you may experience things that may include deposits developing in the gas and fuel system, sludges oil, cracked and flat tires, a frozen or dead battery (use a battery tender). For those of you with water cooling systems be sure you do not develop any deposits in the cooling system. If in doubt about your liquid cooling system ask your Santa Fe Harley-Davidson whiz bang Techs and they can give you good, solid and helpful advice. As for me I have always rode the bike each winter for 19 years and had no problems. This year 2019 will be the second time I have winterized my long-in-the-tooth cycle. She has served me well all these years. Enjoy your winter riding if you still ride, soak in all those sights and smells, but above all, be careful, plan and be safe. I would like to wish all our members a wonderful holiday with family and friends. Cherish those times forever! Ride safe and keep your eyes and head moving…. Assistant Director – Historian’s Corner Gilbert, “Brush Hog” Gurule

December 2019 Historian’s Mark In 1920 Harley-Davidson was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. Now, new motorcycles can be purchased from over 2,000 dealers in 67 countries worldwide. One hundred years of Harley-Davidson! You and I both know HD is more than 100 years old, but this New Year will be 2020 and Harley-Davidson was setting records left and right back in the early 1900s. Literally - (look at the timeline @ https://www.harley-davidson.com/us/en/museum/explore/hd-timeline.html). What plans do you have for 2020? Do you plan on setting or breaking any records? Keep us informed if you do. Last month I mentioned the “Wrecking Crew” and their ceremonious “victory lap” and I am very interested in pursuing this with a “celebratory and welcoming” ride or “lap” for new bike owners. What I am imagining is that once a quarter (this can be adjusted depending on victory or fiasco) the HOG Chapter will meet at SFH-D and go for a ride or “victory lap” with the new bike owners for the quarter. I am imagining a mascot (yes, we have one already, but it may need to be updated to be plush or non-breakable) and it will get strapped to a bike or held in the lap of the rider. (safely of course). So, what are your thoughts on this? Will the chapter support something like this? Will SFH-D support something like this? Let me know. Brush Hog
