Las Sendas Board Member to Bicycle 430 Miles for Injured Marines

Don’t be surprised if you see Las Sendas Community association Board Member and local businessman Brett Bieberdorf on his bike during your morning commute. Brett has been spending six to eight hours a week training for The Ride For Semper Fi, a three-day, 430-mile bike ride from Scottsdale to San Diego. For the second year in a row, he’s joined with more than 70 cyclists, including several active duty and retired Marines, to train for this endurance event that raises awareness and money for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.

Bieberdorf, who owns Rural Electric, says he’s always been a strong supporter of america’s military. But, it wasn’t until his wife, Leslie, volunteered to help with The Ride for Semper Fi four years ago, that he says he finally found a way to give back to the men and women who give so much of themselves.

“These soldiers literally sacrifice their lives to protect our freedoms and our families,” says Bieberdorf. “We lose too many good men and women, and even more come home with life-limiting injuries. This is the very least I can do to show my respect and appreciation.”

Last year, The Ride for Semper Fi was a Bieberdorf family affair. Brett made the 430-mile trek on his bike, while Leslie and their three sons Nick, 16, Erik, 14 and Ryan, 11, supported the riders. He says the physical demands of the ride were more than he expected, but he was even less prepared for the emotional toll the ride would take on him. “It was such a moving experience, to ride in to San Diego with all of my teammates, including a young Marine who

Neighborhood Watch Programa neighborhood watch community has many benefits, but it is also a terrific way to get to know your neighbors. Neighborhood Watch Programs in Las Sendas are required to hold two neighborhood gatherings a year. If you would like more information on the Neighborhood Watch Program in your neighborhood or how to start one, please call our new Crime Prevention officer, Karen Stegenga, from Mesa Police Superstition Division, 480-644-5014.

The City of Mesa Police reminds residents to remove valuables from parked cars and to keep the garage doors closed as a crime prevention method.

Residents are also reminded to use the following phone numbers when needed:

Emergency Mesa Police # 911Non-emergency Mesa Police # 480-644-2211LSCA Patrol # 480-220-1794

had suffered a traumatic brain injury and nearly lost his life in afghanistan,” says Bieberdorf. “This amazing young man had to learn to walk and talk again after an IED shattered his skull, and here he was, making this journey for other injured soldiers. It was beyond humbling.”

Last year, The Ride for Semper Fi raised more than a quarter of a million dollars for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund. Bieberdorf, who is also on the Board of the Freewheel Foundation, a 501(c)3, the team plans to raise more than $300,000 this year.

“I am so proud of the family and friends who have supported this worthy cause, and I cannot wait to make the ride on behalf of all the donors again this year.”

This year’s three-day Ride for Semper Fi departs Scottsdale on october 12th.

If you’d like to learn more about The Ride for Semper Fi or to make a donation, visit www.ride430.com

a typical monsoon season is upon us and trees, shrubs and lawns are enjoying the relief from the dry desert heat of June and July. But wait, “I haven’t seen any rain” you say. That is okay. The higher levels of humidity, cooler temperatures and shorter days means your landscape requires less water.

Water serves multiple purposes in plants. It is a means of transporting nutrition throughout the plant structure. It is also used to cool the plant through a process called transpiration. Much the same way as people perspire, plants have pores that open and close releasing moisture to regulate the temperature of the plant. When humidity is high and temperatures are lower, there is less water loss from the plant meaning less water is needed from irrigation. Rainfall is a bonus, further reducing our need for supplemental irrigation.

All about the baby steps part 2…..

Last issue we discussed the first steps to begin a healthy weight loss regimen. We covered some key points about how to make small changes in your diet and how losing one pound (3,500 calories) can slowly be accomplished by eliminating or reducing just one or two unhealthy foods from your diet each day.

Statistics show that 75-80% of people who begin a weight loss or exercise program quit within the first 4-6 weeks. What troubles me so much about this statistic is that when you begin to make healthy changes, your body responds from the inside out and although you may not be seeing the results immediately, changes aRE taking place. You may be adding muscle while also losing fat so the scale doesn’t change. also, your body has what is called a set point (the point where it is comfortable and has been for a long period of time) and until it knows this is not a temporary change and you are serious, it won’t let go of unwanted weight. and every individual is different as to when that time frame is. Some people can see results right away and some won’t see results for weeks. I personally, can exercise super hard and try to make change and it is 5 weeks before I actually see a difference. I can also go on an unhealthy binge of eating (vacation, summer with the kids) and

Jen’s JournalSubmitted by Jennifer Graffice, Lifestyle Director

not gain weight for 5 weeks, as well, but on day 2 of the 5th week, all the weight will come on at once. That is just the way my body responds to diet and exercise. We are all unique. So what do we do about this……. as I talked about last issue, we just have to keep taking those baby steps towards a healthier lifestyle. Make small changes and be consistent. It also doesn’t all have to be about diet……on the flip side, if you simply move more that will also burn calories. So rather than cutting calories through diet you can burn calories through working out, taking an exercise class, going for a bike ride , or walking the wonderful hills of Las Sendas. Some exercise enthusiasts would rather get in an extra workout so that they can eat their favorite meal or drink that glass of wine. It just depends on how you look at it. Eat less or move more….they both can yield the same result. and if you do both, you may achieve results that much faster. as we all know, diet and exercise do go hand in hand. The athletic Club has a new nutritional program coming in September that addresses both of these issues. With the Dotfit nutritional program and armband you can track how much you eat as well as how much you move. The device actually tells you how many calories you burn in a day so you know exactly how much you can consume. This takes all the guesswork out of the equation. For more information about our new program call the athletic Club and speak to one of our Dotfit Specialists.

Spa TipTip of the Month:Skincare and maintaining a good skin care routine ( despite busy schedules and workloads) should always be one of your top priorities. Skincare is not only important for cosmetic reasons, but skincare can also improve your overall health, both mental and physical. When your skin looks good, you feel more confident, and this reflects in your day to day activities. Skincare may sound time consuming, but if you start forming good habits now, skincare will seem like second nature. Implementing a good skincare regimen will always lead to positive results.

Here is a easy to follow skincare regimen for home:

1. Cleanse

2. Scrub at least once a week to break down that dead skin barrier; Mois-turizer cannot get into the skin if that is blocking the way

3. Toner- helps balance your PH

4. Moisturizer

5. always follow with a sunscreen!

Congratulations Red Mountain America Little League!on Saturday, June 11, 2011 the TIGERS of the RMaLL Majors Division captured the Tournament of Champions title! This tournament featured a double elimination tournament in which the 1st place teams from all the Little Leagues in the City of Mesa Division came together to compete.

The Tigers, managed by Matt Wiley, Doug Coats, and Tim Kott, capped off a brilliant 19-2 season with a stunning walk-off 10-7 Championship victory at Rhodes Junior High School over the Indians, the representative of the Four Peaks Little League.

Ethan VanDemark powered a fast ball high into the sky over the left center field fence that resulted in a 3 run walk off home run and a 10-7 victory for the Tigers. The excitement of the bot-tom of the 6th heroics led to a frenzy of high fives and hugs as VanDemark crossed home plate. Stunning plays by Tyler Coats, Jared Wiley, and Gavin Corley helped bring the Tigers to victory. Significant contributors include Trent Stimac, Zane Carpenter, Trent Land, Ryan Johnson, Chris Huggins, Garron Cadiente, and catcher Zac Evenson.

once again, Congratulations Tigers!

Scottsdale Deputy Fire Chief to be Retirees Club guest Speaker on September 27thThe Las Sendas Retirees Club will host guest Jim Ford, Deputy Chief of the Scottsdale Fire Department at their monthly guest speaker forum on Tuesday, September 27, 2011. Chief Ford is a long time Scottsdale fire official and regional representative to the aFCa (arizona Fire Chiefs association). His knowledge of our arizona natural desert landscape is unique and he will speak about wildlife fires, defensible space, and invasive plants.

This one hour program will include a 25 minute documentary nar-rated by Marshall Trimble, famed arizona Historian. The featured subject is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve where homes and the Sonoran desert come together in an area known as wildlife/urban interface, the same as Las Sendas and the Tonto National Forest.

The video title is “Invasive Weeds” and it demonstrates the sensi-tive and natural ecological balance of our surrounding area. Depu-ty Fire Chief Jim Ford is also featured in this excellent video along

with plant experts Dr. Ed Northam, Jerry Miller, Claire Miller, and Patti Fenner. Chief Ford will address the members and guests and answer questions on this topic at the end of the video.

Since our Las Sendas community is bordered on the north by the Tonto National Forest, we have a common interest to that expressed in the video. This outstanding and informational video was donated to us by Dennis Grzelak, Video Production Manager of City Cable Channel 11, City of Scottsdale. Grzelak wants to encourage awareness of this invasive plant danger to all Sonoran Desert residents. When you walk the desert here you are in a spe-cial place that has a character found nowhere else in Mesa.all residents of the Las Sendas community are welcome to join us for this informative program if they wish to learn more about the Desert Uplands area. Residents are welcome to join us at 9:30am on Tuesday, September 27th at the Trailhead Members Club.

Summer is finally over, and it’s time to welcome back our traveling retirees. We look forward to seeing all of you at the September 27th meeting and sharing all our summer adventures. We have an active and fun-filled year planned for all our members, and September and october are two of our busiest months.

on September 27th, our guest speaker will be Scottsdale Deputy Fire Marshal, Chief Jim Ford. He will brief us on the many invasive plants that have taken over the open spaces throughout Las Sendas and other areas in metropolitan Phoe-nix. These plants do not belong here and are an extreme fire hazard.

Thanks to the support and coordination from the aSU Foundation, our guest speaker on october 11th will be Professor David Coon. His topic will be ‘Buck up Boomers; Caring for Self and others”.

all retirees are in for a special treat when we visit the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) on october 26th. Please note we will not meet for our regular Tuesday meet-ing on october 25th. We will meet at EVIT’s Culinary Institute and be treated to an elegant three-course lunch served by the students. Lunch will be followed by a tour of the entire EVIT facility- should be a delicious experience. From october 17th through 21st adventurous retirees will visit Zion National Park in Utah. The weather should be beautiful, the scenery breathtaking and the company abso-lutely stimulating.

Dr. Jay Butler, left, Associate Professor Emeritus, W.P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University, answers additional questions from (left) Dr. D. Schwalm, Bert Roy and Bill Hall. Dr. Butler presented an in-depth assessment of the current real estate environment and prognoses of its future in Arizona including Las Sendas and Mesa environs at one of the Retiree’s meetings this summer.
