NEWBY PANTHER AT NEWBY PANTHER AT RICHMOND CHARITY EVENTRICHMOND CHARITY EVENT

Doreen & Ian Newby with their 1972 Panther Model J72 roadster (serial #72) at the A Not So Silent Night charity

evening last November at Jaguar Land Rover of Richmond. The occasion was the Richmond Christmas Fund’s largest fund raising event of 2019. The J72 was designed to evoke the Jaguar SS100 produced by SS Cars of Coventry, English, from 1936 to 1939. Custom built for the Panther Cars distributor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this J72 was found in a small town in Tennessee. It is Jaguar-powered,

with a Jag gear box, differential and instrumentation, and can out accelerate an E-Type. There were 368 of these luxury roadsters produced by the Panther Westwinds Company of Surrey, UK, between 1972 and 1981. [Photo courtesy of Jaguar Land Rover of Richmond.]

JCNA REPORT JANUARY 2020Carole Borgens, North West Region Director

Your JCNA Executive & Board of Directors have been busy throughout 2019 with preparations for 2020 events management as well as continuing to fine-tune all aspects of JCNA to better support affiliate clubs.

All changes will come to the AGM for member approval on Saturday, March 21 in Las Vegas. Club Delegates and Proxies may speak to the changes and vote on behalf of their clubs.

Of interest are potential changes to Concours judging, specifically judge training and re-certification. All Chief Judges have been notified of proposed changes and had an opportunity to discuss and make their thoughts known to the Concours Rules Committee Chairman. As a result they have been heard and there have been modifications presented.

A checklist for Chief Judges has been created and will be included in the upcoming Jaguar Journal. It is designed as a chronological listing of must-do steps for Chief Judges. As there is a turn-over of judges from time to time it is thought this information can be helpful

It is proposed that Concours & Slalom entries should contain insurance carrier and coverage detail.

The JCNA website is undergoing redesign and will result in enhanced functionality, membership management for clubs and ease of entering event results. This will continue over the next 2 years so as to not interrupt use by clubs.

Additional information on the AGM is located on the website home page, www.jcna.com Click on Events. The drop-down menu shows AGM – click there and past & current logos are shown – top left is Las Vegas.

While March 21st is the AGM, my role as North West Region Director includes a Board gathering the evening of Thursday the 19th, meetings all day on the 20th, AGM all day on the 21st and Board meetings again the morning of Sunday the 22nd. In addition there are educational seminars Friday and Saturday at the completion of meetings. Annual competition and achievement awards are presented Saturday evening at the wrap-up dinner. Meetings are located at Harrah’s Hotel and Casino.

Following the AGM a full report will be provided. Please contact me with any questions or concerns you have regarding JCNA operations. nn

Inspired by the Past, Designed for the Future

RBW ELECTRIC CLASSIC CARS

TT he RBW MGB Roadster was inspired by Managing Director Peter Swain’s first car when he was 17 years old – an MGB. Therefore the first of the RBW electric designs is an MGB roadster “which

affords the styling of the 60s, yet re-imagined, preserving this iconic design for the future classic motorist”. Deciding not to use old body shells, RBW partnered with British Heritage Limited to provide new shells. The body has been de-seamed, with additions including modern lighting, electric windows, central locking and air conditioning. An LCD instrument panel in the dashboard has Bluetooth connectivity and SAT/NAV.

RBW has been working with Continental Engineering Services, which has adapted one of its off the shelf 70KW electric transaxles and converted it to a rear-mounted powerplant, with the front-mounted batteries supplied by Hyperdrive. Chassis specialists Development Engineering & Enterprise created the rear sub-frame that houses the motor and related wishbone and coil spring independent rear suspension, along with the front suspension and braking systems. The first limited edition, hand-built models were delivered in the summer 2019.

Specs: KW power output (70); Range (160 miles); Recharging (8 hours); Top speed (95 mph); Equivalent bhp (94, with 226N of instantaneous torque).

June 1 to 5: NAMGAR’s GT-45This annual North American MGA Register “Get Together” is taking place in Colorado Springs, Colorado. For a description of the event and information on the convoy to Colorado being led by Peter & Anne Tilbury, see the article on page 7 of the November December Classical Gas. Just announced – the North American MMM Register will have its annual meet in conjunction with GT-45. (MMM refers to Midget, Magna and Magnette, the overhead cam MGs produced between 1929 and 1936.) Registration for the GT is now open on www.gt45.co, which also has full details on the event program.

June 28 to July 1: NAMGBR’s MG2020

Calgary is this year’s location for the annual convention of the North American MGB Register, with the car show and banquet taking place on Canada Day. Workshops, scenic drives and social events will fill out the program, with the show at Calgary’s Stanley Park. The convention hotel is the Deerfoot Inn & Casino (https://deerfootinn.com). Registration is now available on www.namgbr.org/mg2020-2, which also has full details of the program. [Ian & Doreen Newby are planning to drive to MG2020 and will be inviting other members to join them.]

June 29 to July 3: GoF WestThe 48th Annual GoF West will take place at the Mt. Hood Oregon Resort in Welches. Gatherings of the Faithful are open to all MG models of any year, not just T-Series and other early MGs. This year’s event will feature a car show, a funkhana, a gimmick rally, technical sessions, an auction, plus non-car activities such as a croquet tournament and lawn bowling. New Years Day brought out 30 cars and 50 people from CXKJR/CCMGC, LAMB and the Old English Car Club. 10 CXKJR/CCMGC cars participated. And the MGAs were out in force, with 7 on the Run.

Brilliant weather was arranged by Tony Cox. The 30 mile route took an hour, going from the Campbell River Store in South Surrey, through Fort Langley and Derby Reach Park, to Port Kells. Excitement on the route was provided by a large tree branch across Armstrong Road (about 10 inches in diameter), so the cars had to divert around it on an alternative road. John Walkden from LAMB organized the re-routing of the cars.

Lunch was at Jimy Mac’s Pub in Port Kells. The annual Pub Quiz was compiled by Judy Cox, assisted by Peter and Anne Tilbury. The winners: 1st Alan Inglis & Wendy (Lotus Elan), 2nd Jim & Sue McLagan (MGB); 3rd Les Garbutt & Barbara Bell (Jaguar XKR). A tie-breaker question had to be used: “If Tony Cox was with us, how far could he drive his MGA into a forest?” [See page 11 of this Classical Gas for the Pub Quiz]

2020 came in with a bang at Ian and Doreen Newby’s New Years Eve Party in Aldergrove. The evening included a pot luck, fierce table hockey competition and bubbly at midnight. I’VE LONG BEEN CURIOUS I’VE LONG BEEN CURIOUS ABOUT ELECTRIC CARS, U2?ABOUT ELECTRIC CARS, U2?

SS eeing her Auctioneer husband struggling to advance the bidding at the Heritage Live Auction, my dutiful bride threw in what became the

winning bid. Ever found yourself Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of?

Fortunately, the prize was the use of a Jaguar or Land Rover for a weekend, generously donated by Richmond Jaguar Land Rover. We were very impressed with the friendly and efficient staff at Richmond JLR when we went to pick up an all electric I-Pace. To a person they exhibited enthusiasm for the remarkable line of vehicles they sell. A clear example of Pride in the Name of Love.

Now I recognize that there are endless social and economic rationales surrounding the purchase of an electric car but who amongst us oddball enthusiasts of old English cars were ever rational when adding a vehicle to the fleet? Who hasn’t felt that Moment of Surrender when we know beyond any doubt that we must have That Car?

My point being that for myself, and I suspect for you dear reader, it has always been about performance, about Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses. Show of hands! Well, let me tell you, the I-Pace takes performance to an entirely new level. Talk about an Electrical Storm.

We had a lunch date that Friday with friends who live atop the Westwood (RIP) Plateau. Following an exhilarating run along the freeway we thought we’d better see how the I-Pace could perform on the steep grades. Humming Take Me to the Clouds Above, I planted my right foot and the car erupted up the hill. This earned me a reprimand from the passenger seat. “Don’t do that again without warning me”. I guess she didn’t recognize the tune. Coincidently, the last time we made the Westwood climb was to pick up some furniture in our 1982 air cooled VW Westfalia. Comparing that ascent,

when we couldn’t Get Out of Your Own Way, to the “get out of our way” I-Pace rocket was dramatic.

Saturday morning, we picked up our 20 something Nephew for a demonstration run out around UBC.

While awaiting a light I dutifully recommended that everyone sit up straight in their seat and place their noggin against the head rest. The absence of traffic and an open 80 kph section of road seemed ideal for an acceleration run. (Call me older but never quite mature). His naturally too cool for school demeaner evaporated with cries of “wow, OMG, unbelievable, etc.” He remarked “I’ve only ever felt that kind of thrust when taking off in a plane, but then you hear the deafening noise of the jets whereas this is silent”. High praise

indeed! The impression is one of constant G-forces, no shifting and no tapering of torque, an unrelenting pull Until the End of the World sensation.

We awoke to a light rain on Sunday (no, not that Sunday) keen to show off the I-Pace to some guests from Victoria.

Phil and Brigitte are keen race fans and we’ve been to many Historic, F1, Group C, IMSA, INDY and Endurance (read LeMans) races with these friends, so they know their way around high-performance machinery. Although amazed by the acceleration what they really wanted to see was how the I-Pace handled the twisty bits. It was time to go to Where the Streets Have No Name …. the Cypress Mountain Hill Climb.

With all of those heavy batteries down below the floor boards the centre of gravity is somewhere south

of where there is No Line on the Horizon. i.e. lower than an E-Type with flat tyres. Consequently, the I-Pace handles better than being on rails. Flying around curves and hairpins left some occupants suffering from Vertigo while displaying another advantage to passengers of pushing the limits in a silent steed. You can Scream Without Raising Your Voice!

Les Garbutt

Classical Gas | 13January | February 2020

Descent was amusing, courtesy of the residual braking supplied by those electric motors now being turned into dynamos. I launched the cat up to 80kph then lifted my foot from the go pedal, never touching the stop pedal, only to cast off speed at a surprising rate. We were down to 30 kph before we could Breathe, giving the feeling of Running to Stand Still.

In summary, even though the I-Pace is not the Original of the Species it is indeed an impressive piece of feline technology. It takes off like a dragster, handles like a club racer, then stops on a dime giving nine cents change. She does everything you’d expect of a big South American cat. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that it also lands on its feet although our test criteria didn’t extend to taking it that close to The Edge.

I did unearth several faults however. Foremost, the near complete lack of maintenance work leaves the backyard mechanic nothing to do. This will inevitably lead the born tinkerer into temptation and believe me this is not the place to begin a Trip Through Your Wires. Secondly, while peacefully cruising across the Lions Gate Bridge we heard the ladies in the backseat exclaim, “wow, this car is so silent we can hear everything you guys up front are saying.” Phil and I exchanged a quick look of horror

before saying “Yes, isn’t that splendid?” Adding to the risk of matrimonial catastrophe is the very real potential for bodily injury. One needs to count to ten before reacting to a green light to avoid rear ending any turtle-like gasoline powered cars in front and the regenerative braking slows the car so effectively that you need to ensure that no one is following closer that a football field behind when lifting from the go pedal. Perhaps my biggest complaint is the complete lack of the comforting roar of a well tuned engine massaged by the overtones of a few SU

carbs on full suck. One might be forgiven for thinking that a car with more torque than a tunneling machine would make a great tow vehicle. Alas, Jaguar Engineers did not see fit to provide a trailer hitch. You may install a custom bike rack, in keeping with the Green theme, but my days as

a Tri-Athlete are so far in the past they might never have happened.

Monday morning as I was returning the I-Pace to Richmond JLR I kept pondering, do I return home With You or Without You? I left the question for Another Day.

My conclusion: I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.

Over 2U?

I-Pace: The most awarded car of 2019!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

14 | Classical Gas January | February 2020

We had talked about the need for a vision to help guide our thinking for 2020 events and activities. We would be following a very successful 50th anniversary year. Big boots to fill. Our first thought was to just survive the year without being chased out of town by an angry mob waving pitchforks and torches (the flaming kind). Realizing that was a bit selfish we came up with: looking for ways to engage our members more. That would mean how can we get greater participation in our monthly meetings and events? How can we make better use of our resources like Classical Gas, Little Classical Gas, jaguarmg.com and our Facebook page? How can we attract more members?

To help turn the vision into action an Events Committee was formed. A group of experienced, talented and creative members stepped forward to form the EC. They started with a list of core events and activities, however are free to propose additional ideas.

In the September/October 2019 issue of Classical Gas (pages 12 & 13) you saw the large list of volunteers who made it a great year – again a huge thanks to all. We will need help again and hope you will find ways to join in. There are many ways you can, no matter how big or small. Bring something to show, bring someone to an event, contribute an idea to the Events Committee. We also encourage

PARTICIPATION, not only in the Club events, but also in other events and activities such as Kruise for Kids, Cars & Coffee, visiting our Sponsors and advertisers. We want to see and be seen as the best classic car club.

Also to help focus our thinking through the year the Executive and Events Committee came up with a Theme for 2020:

“A HISTORY OF INNOVATION, INVENTION AND COMPETITION”

celebrating the accomplishments of Jaguar and MG. This theme is to run through the year’s events and activities. You may be able to contribute some ideas.

In addition to highlighting the historical milestones of both iconic brands, we will be featuring the anniversaries of MG and Jaguar achievements through the years, right up to the present day. We will also explore the future of the two brands……..MG has the ZS EV and Jaguar the I-Pace with an all electric XJ saloon/sedan coming soon.

As your 2020 Presidents, our goal is to create activities and events that please all of our members at least some of the time! It’s your club.

Looking forward to a great 2020. n n

Some Tips on Car PreparationSome Tips on Car Preparation

A re you thinking of driving your MG to either, or both, of this year’s National events? NAMGAR’s GT45 is in Colorado Springs (June

1 - 5), and MG2020 is in Calgary (June 28 - July 1). Preparing your car for the trip to either of these events depends on how often you drove it during the last 12 months, and whether you put it into “hibernation” for the winter months.

While most cars with BC Collector plates are insured all year long, some car owners choose to not drive their car in wet weather or during the winter. So the car checks can vary for “all year” drivers and “fair weather” drivers.

After a winter layup, the battery may need charging unless a trickle charger has been connected to the car for the winter months. A car that has been driven through the winter should not need the battery charged. However, tire pressures, including the spare, should be checked, and the tire tread and tire age should be looked at. If tires are more than 7 years old they should be replaced. Tire pressures on an MGA or MGB should be about 28 psi front and rear. For high-speed long distance trips, or driving with a loaded car, the rears can be increased to 30-32 psi.

Next, open the bonnet and do a visual check of all

hoses and wiring. Especially check the wires going to the alternator (or generator) and the coil. A lot of roadside breakdowns happen when wires or connectors break near these two items due to vibration. Hoses that are hard, or have cracks, should be changed for new ones. Keep the ones you take off to carry as spares.

While under the bonnet look at the brake and clutch fluid levels. If these are down significantly, maybe you have a leak. Look for brake fluid on the inside of wheels, on the driver’s carpet or mat, or under the clutch slave cylinder. Also look at the radiator coolant (50/50 mix antifreeze and water), either in the top of the radiator, or in the overflow bottle or bag. Then remove the piston rods in the top of the SU carburetor, and top up the piston oil as necessary – fill to the top edge of the piston. I use ATF for the carbs, but any light oil will do. Note that this oil is a consumable as it is used as you drive. And a carb without oil will not function correctly – no oil results in no piston damping, causing the needle to rise too quickly and creating an over rich mixture on acceleration.

Obviously, engine oil and gearbox oil levels should be checked prior to a long road trip. The differential oil level should also be checked a couple of times a year. Look at the steering rack boots. If they are torn or

Check the wires and connectors on the coil, including the centre one from the distributor.

Check the wires and connectors on the back of generator (or alternator). Oil the rear bushing on the generator.

cracked, they should be replaced (as a pair), and the steering rack oil should be topped up.

A visual check of spark plug wires and spark plug wire boots at both ends is recommended once a year. If you have points and a condenser in the distributor, then remove the distributor at least once a year to check the advance weight springs, the internal wires, and the points. Points gap should be 16 thou. Put a few drops of light oil on the bolt holding the cam and a light smear of grease on the cam surface. Similarly, a couple of drops of light oil on the rear bush of the generator should be applied once or twice a year. Check the fan belt for cracks and the correct tension.

After the under bonnet check, look at the wiper blades. Then get your favourite co-driver to assist you to check the lights, turn signals, and brake lights – you need ignition for the brake light check.

Lastly, when planning a longish trip (Colorado will be 5 days each way, while Calgary is at least 2 days each way) try to join up with other Club members. It is amazing how

much knowledge, and experience, there is in a 5-car convoy. Also the range of available spare parts will be bigger when you travel in a group.

Suggested parts to be carried will be covered in the next Classical Gas. nn

O nce again, Music and dancing filled the Coghlan Hall in Aldergrove on November 30, this time

for the CXKJR/CCMGC Christmas Party. The “Ready, Steady, Go” band (who also entertained club members as the Fab Fourever last spring) kept the dance floor filled, with songs of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Dave Clark Five, the Beach Boys and other classic bands from the ‘60s. A great way to start off the Christmas season. n

Top up the damper oil in the carb pistons.

T he CXKJR/CCMGC Club Excellence Award was established in 2016 with funds made available from

the Club’s hosting the Jaguar Clubs of North America AGM. It provides awards for outstanding students in Vancouver Community College automotive programs. The award rewards hard work, good grades and diligence, with hopes of inspiring a passion for vintage vehicle restoration.

Eddie Chen, a student in the Automotive Service Technology Diploma Program, was selected by the College to receive our club award. It was presented to him at the VCC Fall Student Awards Ceremony November 22, 2019.

Eddie has been maintaining an A-average, the highest GPA in the class. He has an unusual background that includes a Bachelor’s degree in New Media Arts from the National Taipei University where he studied

programming, graphic design, game design, video capture clips and interactive devices. One of his hobbies was creating mechanical kinetic art works, winning an award for one made out mechanical bits and pieces.

Eddie initially became interested in cars since his father in Taiwan owned a car repair shop, specialized in fixing European cars. That’s where he learned to communicate with customers and to repair vehicles.

The year after he graduated from university, he worked as a Sales Consultant for Subaru Taiwan Motor Image. His interests include photography, playing basketball, and riding and modifying motorcycles. He indicates he is working hard to get his Red Seal designation and hopes to become a highly skilled technician who can fix supercars in the future.

C XKJR/CCMGC put on an Easter Bunny Rally for many years and it made a return last year as part of the 50th Anniversary schedule. It was such a success, it will be back again this spring. The tradition is that the winner of the rally quiz one year organizes the next year’s

event, and thus this year Steve and Sheila Kaufman are setting up the 2020 Easter Bunny Run. It will start at Garry Point in Steveston, with participants asked to arrive at 10:30 am for an 11:00 am departure. There will be questions and prizes, with Easter headgear optional. If you are planning to participate, Steve & Sheila would like to hear from you so they can estimate numbers for lunch at the restaurant. Email: [email protected]

Jim McLagan recently became the Western Canadian representative for the UK based E-Type and XK Clubs. He’s been a member of the E-Type club for over 10 years and discovered the monthly magazine was interesting, with articles about events and from people restoring similar cars to the work he was doing on his 1967 FHC. Discounts for club members from vendors also came in useful and another benefit was discovering events organized through the club. Sue and Jim have participated in a few, including a guided driving tour around New Zealand in 2016 and in 2019 a similar event in Greece, with the bonus of adding some new friends from the XK and E-Type clubs.

His goal is to share the benefits of the club with other Jaguar owners and try to grow the local participation. This would obviously not be a conflict with CXKJR/CCMGC activities and if we have enough

interest we would brainstorm ideas such as weekend events to some of the spectacular areas around this part of the world.

Although you are encouraged to think about joining one of the clubs this is not a requirement to participate in any events we arrange.
