Newsletter Date Welcome back to another great season of wood turning demos, discussions and inspiration. We have an exciting new schedule of demonstrations organized by Adam Christiaanse for a variety of skill levels from beginner to advanced. We have topics that cover Oval turning, a Rose Engine Lathe, bowl savers Hands-on turning nights and more. We are starting off with a demo on bowl turning by past President, Perry Niehaus. The "5-Minute finishing tip" is now replaced by a new segment called "Ask the Expert" where there is a brief opportunity to ask any question you have about any woodturning unknown you have and hopefully an expert will provide an answer that helps you out. Don't be shy... It could just be a curiosity you have ...like "What's a Rose Engine Lathe?" or "why do I get those nasty catches and how can I avoid them?" The mid summer turning event at Hougen Park proved interesting as members tested out their croquet mallets on the mostly round, wood spheres and attempted to dodge around the goose dodo. Then we sharpened up on the difference between white and red oaks and red horse chestnut and horse chestnut. This was followed up by expert BBQ skills and small talk about serious life issues. Thanks to all who made it happen. The book we used was "Trees of North America" by Alan Mitchell The "Presidents Challenge" is designed for participation. Many of us are hesitant to try something new. This aspect of the evening hopefully will challenge some of us to make the month's project and bring it in. A number of our members were able to at- tend the national woodturning event at Portland Oregon. You may want to ask them for some of the highlights. I have included some images from the event. Check with Terry Horne, Ross Patterson, Bob Gonzales, Lee and Gloria Heberts, Ian Fulford and Jim Axelson among others. By the time you get this letter the West Coast Roundup will just be starting September 7-9. If you have been away all summer and are won- dering if there is still room for registration, the answer is yes; that includes one day registrations. http://www.gvwg.ca/Symposium2007.htm . Most turners run their lathes too fast. If the shavings hitting your hand feel hot, the RPM is set too high and will only result in a poor cut and premature dulling of your tool edge

Inside Story Headline

Rose Engine Lathe Demo Coming Next Month

Jon Magill of Widbey Island Washington designed a kit for building the rather complex Rose Engine Lathe, making it affordable to more turners. He will be our guest next month

The Lathe in the picture is not the one he designed. His kit is mostly made from MDF. Jon gave a number of presentations at t the Portland AAW symposium.
