KILMARNOCK—On June 12, the staff, volunteers and members of the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck (BGCNN) gathered at the club’s Kilmarnock site to cel-ebrate passing the $2.4 million mark toward their Building Great Futures Capital Cam-paign goal of $2.6 million.

Joining them was Margaret Nost, affiliate director of philan-thropic services for River Coun-ties Community Foundation (RCCF), which is encouraging BGCNN to issue a community challenge to match the River Counties Community Founda-tion grant funding of $76,000.

“Now that we are in sight of the campaign finish line, we are so thankful for our friends at the RCCF for offering this

challenge to the community,” said executive director Phillip Mumford.

“It is our goal to complete this campaign by the beginning of fall so that we can focus all efforts on our kids and the pro-grams that we provide them,” said Mumford. “With this boost from RCCF’s challenge, I feel certain that we will com-plete our efforts quickly with our community’s support.”

“Specifically, we are chal-lenging the community to help us raise $25,000 by July 19,” said development director Susan Cookman.

Donations, flagged as RCCF matching grant, may be mailed to BGCNN, PO Box 564, Kilmarnock 22482, or submit-ted at bgcnn.org.

HEATHSVILLE—The Friends of Northumberland Public Library (NPL) recently donated more than $1,300 to the library’s summer reading program.

Earlier this year, artwork by Matthew Harwood was donated to NPL by his family and sold during a silent auction by the Friends group. The 12 pieces raised $1,385 to support the summer read-ing program.

“This generous gift from the Harwood family provided the funds to support the library’s summer reading program for the benefit of the young readers and ‘lifetime learners’ of Northum-berland County,” said library friend and volunteer Bill Estell.

The event was a first for the Friends and for the library, he said.“Fortunately, we had a silent auction expert on the Friends’

board in Shirley Haynie and she and her team put the auction together. It was a huge success,” said Estell.

Harwood is a resident artist at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town Alexandria where he is also the public art manager for the City of Alexandria.

MONTROSS—The 2019 recipient of the John Paul Han-bury Award in the religious category is Nomini Church of Cople Episcopal Parish. The award is sponsored by the Northern Neck of Virginia His-torical Society.

The bronze Hanbury plaque will be unveiled at 11:15 a.m. on June 30, following the 10 a.m. worship service at Nomini Church, 3589 Cople Highway, Montross. All are invited to attend.

Some 164 years after its construction in 1852, Nomini Church was severely damaged by a tornado on February 19, 2016. A parish committee was formed to oversee the restora-tion including the design and installation of a new stained-glass window and chandelier, removing carpet and refinishing heart pine floors. The church reopened for worship service on Christmas Eve 2017.

The late John Paul Hanbury was a noted architect who specialized in the preserva-tion and restoration of historic structures, reported executive director Kathy G. Schuder. His last project was overseeing the work done on Virginia’s Exec-utive Mansion adjacent to the State Capitol in Richmond.

Residential properties receiv-ing the Hanbury Award from 2012 to 2018 are Roanoke, Islington Cottage, Locust Farm,

Ryiah Moore comes to the Northern Neck Family

YMCA almost every weekday. Yet, when asked about her fitness goals or competition schedule, she smiles and says that her dedi-cation is not about either of those options. She uses her workouts as therapy.

She hopes that as a stay-at-home mother, her honesty does not come across as selfish. But Moore confesses that having a new baby and a five year old is a 24-hour job. She believes that 60 minutes of self-care a day helps her be a better parent.

Moore feels that being a mom is the hardest, but greatest, job she has ever had. Before their daughter’s birth, Moore was discussing fatherhood with her husband, warning him that he would experience every emo-tion possible in a 24-hour span. She feels that being a parent is, “Exhaustingly delicious.”

The YMCA’s Child Watch ser-vice makes her renewal workouts possible. Moore has been placing her son, Kellen, with the pro-gram since he was eight weeks old. Now, at five, he gets excited about accompanying Moore to the gym. As a “planner,” Kellen

often schedules the YMCA into his day and then promotes adding the library and park to the agenda. New baby, Everly, also started child watch at eight weeks. She spends most of her time working on naps.

With the fall opening of the new aquatics center, Everly will, like Kellen, take part in the infant/parent swimming program. Moore hopes that her daughter will be as active as Kellen, who has participated in seasonal swimming, soccer and T-Ball programs.

Moore says she does not have specific workout or body goals,

she just shows up and hopes for the best. She claims to be fine simply riding a bike and watching her adult (not cartoon) shows on her tablet. But, no one should be fooled by Moore’s nonchalance, she is committed to making the time count.

While she binge streams “her shows,” the bike pedals are spin-ning, or the tread mill is elevated, or the arc trainer is pump-ing. During weight training, Moore draws on the knowledge-able staff and her “gym family” to motivate her and ensure she is using proper training techniques. Her everyday schedule allows her to methodically work on dif-ferent muscle groups throughout the week.

“You have to take your windows,” says Moore as she builds her aerobic endurance or attacks the weights. She knows that at any moment she might be called into Child Watch to change a diaper or feed a hungry child. These inevitable interrup-

tions draw no complaints from Moore. She knows her priori-ties—the children come first.

Moore loves the feeling she gets at the YMCA. “You know the people, or you know their parents, or you know somebody who knows them.” Plus, many of her peers have children partici-pating in the youth programs. This gives them the opportunity to reconnect. She thinks the area, “is the best place to raise kids because you always feel safe.”

“The nicest people in the world are at the post office and the Y,” says Moore.

People hold doors for you, make pleasant conversation and are kind to one another. A recent incident at the YMCA makes her smile. One of the older members walked by her during her time on the elliptical trainer and said, “How you feelin’ mama?” Yep, … personal therapy.

Nomini Church is the first in the religious category, said Schuder.

The first Nomini Church built in the 1660s was a frame structure on the west side of Nomini Creek. In 1704 a stone church was erected on the east side of the creek. The War of 1812 resulted in the bombard-ment and destruction of the 1704 building.

In 1852 the current church was built very near the 1704 footprint. It has been a cher-ished house of worship since that time and has had attentive care. Several years ago a ramp was installed to provide access for those with needs.
