“So is my word that goes out from my mouth; It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11

This year the Gospel Bookstore is celebrating 40 years of “The Goodness of God”. On December 3st 966, the doors of the newly built Gospel Book-store opened to the public. An article in the Laredo newspaper stated that the “proceeds will be used to build up stock, but the main purpose is the distribution of religious publications”. To this day that is what we are about. Bibles still are our number one seller.

H. Sanford Haugen, former LALM director and founder of the Gospel Bookstore wrote, “The Gospel Bookstore had its beginning in a Bible distribution ministry”.

It began in what is now the small office building of the LALM and in 966 it was moved next door to the multi-use building that had been built with the help of many mission supporters and volunteers. Lately, however, its forty years of service to the community began to reveal the urgent need of a “face lift”. The engineer for this project would be Enrique Rangel.

Last April Elvira Ruiz, our manager, married Enrique Rangel. He has proven to be a great blessing to us as has

Elvira. He is a man of many talents, hardworking, and willing to help in any way he can. When challenged with the idea of renovating the bookstore, we found him more than equal to the task. By the middle of December the functional space was increased by one third, with slat board for new displays, and ceramic tile through-out, ready for the next forty years! Refreshing, func-tional, and inviting.

As part of the 40th an-niversary celebration we

encouraged our customers to sign up for 40 door prizes to be given out on our Celebration Day, January 27, 2007. We began the day with drawing of names of the winners. Pr. Alejandro Carranza and his wife Aca-cia Hernandez Carranza from Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, ac-

Last Spring on a trip to San Luis Potosi state of Mexico we had brought some donated shoes and clothes. More clothes than shoes. There was great demand for the used shoes. I still remember the pleas, “When you come back please bring size nine!” The answer to that request came in the Fall of 2006 when we received the donation of over 2, 000 pairs of tennis shoes for the families of Mexico. The sheer quantity is mind-boggling. They arrived in a big truck from the East Coast through the generosity of Operation Foot-steps, eight pallets piled high with boxes of shoes. Operation Footsteps is a charitable or-ganization begun by a man who while visiting Africa was asked by a poor child for a pair of shoes. His heart was touched and through the network of connections in his sporting goods business has been able to send used shoes, es-pecially tennis for children and youth, around the world. Recently we made a trip with two Winter Texans couples and were able to bless some needy families with shoes through our churches in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico. And we still have a plenteous supply. Thank you Operation Footsteps.

complished musicians, gave an afternoon concert in Hobart Hall and led worship Sunday at Bethel Lutheran. (The Bookstore has CD’s of their music if you would like some great Christian music in Spanish.) Acacia grew up in General Teran, Nuevo Leon, Mexico where her fathers’ family was part of the early mission work of the Latin American Lutheran Mission. After the concert there was a time of prayer ministry for various needs. The day of celebration was concluded with a wonderful meal prepared by the members of Bethel Lutheran of grilled chicken, rice, beans and of course, tortillas. All prepared the Mexican way!

Our bookstore manager, Elvira, had been suffering greatly

from severe allergic reactions for a long time. Her doctors had given up and referred her to an expensive specialist. Like so many she can’t afford health insurance. During the bookstore renovation her condition worsened. Some days she would come to work with her face swollen and puffy, her eyes red and hard to open. This was painful and burdensome. After the Celebra-tion day, she looked noteably better. “Oh” she said, “I need to tell you on the Celebration Saturday about five different people came by to pray for me. One lady gave me a cream. The next day I noticed the pain and the swelling was gone. The cream helps but I believe the Lord has healed me.”

Another amazing thing happened that Saturday. For one thing it was a beautiful sunny day after a long period of cold and rainy days. We had asked all three of our employees, El-vira, Marissa and Rosy to work that day. Between the rush of customers, serving cake and cider, and attending to sales we would need extra help. God seemed to bring in customers ‘out of the woodwork’. The day turned out to be a record breaker in sales. It was encouraging to see so many that the Gospel Bookstore has served over the years come out and celebrate the 40th Anniversary day with us.

As a thank you, each person coming to the bookstore re-ceived a complimentary 40th Anniversary bookmark completed by friends of the mission. Our special thanks goes out to them. Thank you, Trinity Lutheran of Minnehaha Falls in Minne-apolis, MN, St. Andrews Mission Society in West Fargo, ND. To the youth of Lakota Lutheran in Lakota, North Dakota the dear folks at Grace Lutheran in Parker, South Dakota. Thank you Carol Olson and Grace Lutheran in Lockhart, Texas for your part in making the 500 Celebration bookmarks. Over and over again the people who get a bookmark say, “Gracias!”, “Gracias!”, “Thank You”.

How we enjoy the fellowship and help of those who escape winter and spend part of their vacation giving of themselves here at the border and in Mexico. So far this January and February God has brought Geraldine Schnable and Donna Van Ekeren from South Dakota to help here at the mission and Pr. Bryan Robertson of Decorah, IA who came to spend a week to sharpen his Spanish abilities in Saltillo. Two very special couples, Dave & Carol Copenhaver (IN) and Malcolm & Mary Bagney (ND) have spent two weeks or more with us for consecutive years. Peter and Kari Stadem of Minnesota with six of their seven children, and a neice, stayed a few days en route to Saltillo where their oldest daughter, Michelle, will be spending some additional weeks for language study. It was interesting to read both in their family tree and in our LALM book written by Rev. Arnold Hedin, some of the Stadem’s history of involvement with the LALM and with Claire and Norma Hobart. Others are due to come before the end of February among them our mission treasurer Bob and June Myller. Also Dennis and Nancy Brown of Brooklyn Park Lutheran where Barb and I served as pastor 992-97 who will lead us in a spiritual retreat.

The Copenhavers and the Bagnes have concentrated on completing the remodeling that was begun two years ago on the Norma and Claire Hobart home which was the original property of the mission complex here in Laredo. We include some photos of the before and after of this project which will serve the mission as a place for staff, when God supplies, and we invite your prayers that God will help us find a Christian family to rent it for the time being. It will be a tremendous blessing to the mission where the utility bills for the seven buildings average over $,000./month.

The “Mission Society of St. John” left Weber Minnesota on February 8th. The 0 members drove 30 hours to the Filadelfia Lutheran Church in Saltillo, Mexico. They left Minnesota with a simple two word prayer that God would, “Use Them”. Their motto is from Psalm 5: “Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to Your name be the glory”. They came ready to work and share God’s love. They brought with them donations of clothing, school kits, layettes, heath kits and medicine for the people of Saltillo.

The work projects included cement work, chiseling walls, moving and sifting sand, mixing cement, painting exterior walls, washing windows and general outdoor clean-up.

They worked side by side with “Alfredo”, a local member Filadelfia Lutheran Church, who praised God every morning be-fore they began to work. They were very productive despite the language barriers. For some of the members, it was a first time experience in more ways than one. Some of the youth members had never done manual labor before.

This group also held a Vacation Bible School on Tuesday, through Thursday. The Mission team spent Monday afternoon greeting people in the neighborhood and handing out flyers. On Tuesday when the time came for the first session of Vacation Bible School to begin, no one showed up. In their disappointment they began praying, that God would sent them some children for VBS.

God Heard those prayers and answered their requests and before long God had assembled 9 children, plus parents and

other adults. Bersabeth (Pastor Marco Antonio’s wife) was gracious enough to read the Bible story each day. The chil-dren were very attentive and receptive to her teaching. The language barrier didn’t seem to be a problem as they made crafts and sang Spanish songs.

During the evenings they played a pick-up game of street soccer with neighborhood children. The children were very enthusiastic, athletic and

seemed to have a great time. They ended the game on Tuesday evening with the singing of; “Chisto Me Ama” (the Spanish ver-sion of “Jesus Loves Me”) and an invitation for the Children to join us for Vacation Bible School.

The Thursday evening worship service was uplifting and full of music. Phoebe, the gracious interpreter, helped the team introduce themselves, share their thoughts about their experience at Filiadelfia. Pheobe also translated Pastor Zellers’ sermon. The group sang two songs in Spanish. Later in the service, the local congregation asked them to sing one song for them in English. They were delighted to share one song in their own language.

The Mission society reported countless answered prayers. They had a safe journey, clear sailing through immigration and no problems with the van or trailer at the boarder crossings. God granted an increase of faith to the team members through devo-tions, Bible study, fellowship and prayer. The team learned to be flexible and to trust God in all circumstances. It was a spiritually uplifting, exciting, and insightful. In short it was a fantastic ex-perience. The week ended with a trip to the Marcado and visiting some of the historical sights in Saltillo.

Our group of 28, comprised of youth and adults ranging from ages to 79, traveled from North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota, January 27th to February 4th, to help the church in Rio Bra-vo, Mexico. Some of us have made many mission trips to Mexico, and for others, it was their first. And yet, I am continually amazed at how God uses every person He chooses to go on these trips, and their skills and abilities, to accomplish His purpos-es. Whether they were assigned to the food, medi-cal, donated items, spiritual, VBS, or work project committees, I could see God working in them and through them. While the food committee was busy preparing our meals, part of the team helped pour cement for the roof on the second story to the annex of the church at El Sembrador, while others went over to the El Camino mission and stuccoed and plastered one of the rooms there. Still others completed vari-ous other jobs around the church and mission. The VBS team held two Bible Schools each day, one in the morning, the other in the afternoon, for the children over at the mission, which drew about 25-30 children for each session the first part of the week, and ended with over 60 by the last session on Friday afternoon. Thursday afternoon, after the VBS, a clothing give away was organized, and we were able to distribute many donated items to the families in the neighborhood at the mission. On Friday there was a huge crowd on hand as almost everyone on the team pitched in to help put on a carnival at the mission, after the VBS. What great fun as we played games and were able to connect with the children and their families. We have discovered that, although we come on these mission trips to give of ourselves, we always leave having received much more than we gave. This trip left us all with many memories we shall never forget.
