At 35 and still unmarried, her father feared he would support her the rest of her life. To help find Sadie a husband, he declared a Sadie Hawkins Day. On this day, a footrace was to be held and all the eligible men were to run and Sadie would chase them. Whoever she caught and crossed over the finish line (or dragged over) would be her lawful wedded husband. On the night before the race, there was a dance. All the single gals wore shoes with spikes on the bottom. At this dance, they stepped on the guys' feet a lot so that the next day they couldn't run as fast and would be easier to catch. Oh, those clever gals! And, so a Sadie Hawkins Dance and footrace became an annual Dogpatch tradition. This fictional event, invented in 1937 by Al Capp, creator of the Lil’ Abner cartoon, unintentionally helped create a step forward in the Women’s Liberation Movement. The idea of it being OK for a girl to chase a guy or ask a guy out to a dance, suddenly became appealing and schools and college campuses across the country began the tradition of the Sadie Hawkins D ance that continues today. But it’s more than just about chasing boys and finding a husband. That is sexist – that women need to be married to be complete. To be happy. That they can’t support themselves without a man. In 1937, this was common thought, but this made-up holiday lit the fire to empower women to chase after what they want and not wait for it to come their way. The practical basis of a real Sadie Hawkins Day is one of simple traditional gender role-reversal. Though women are more comfortable today asking a man on a date, we still have a long way to go asking for what we want in other areas of life. Why is it so hard to ask for that raise? Why do we question whether we deserve that job or promotion? Why do we settle in relationships? Heck, why d o we deny ourselves simple guilty pleasures like a new lipstick? Too often we sell ourselves short, we try to avoid conflict. It’s time to stand up and ask for what you want. We must abandon the mindset that if we can’t get what we want we will take what we can get. Why are we content to settle for less than what we know we deserve…in our career, our relationship, in life? Stop being afraid to ask for what you want and need from others, to speak your truth, even though it might create conflict or tension. I believe we all have the power to get what we want, what we need – but you should seek it out. We’ve all heard “be careful what you ask for – you just might get it”. Yeah baby…and you deserve it. Your happiness and your equality is not going to fall from the sky – reach up, grab ahold and don’t let go of your dreams. So, this month celebrate Sadie and women’s equality. This is an ERA with a stellar future. Give thanks for those who have paved the way for change. BE the change you want yourself and women to come. Equality starts with YOU.

Thank you all for a record donation of box tops & labels for education. We

presented to Lisa Tatone with a whopping total of $67.60 in box tops

monthly meetings to deposit your donation.

Time to start a new collection!

Thanks, go out to our members who helped with the recent Project Bundle Up at Kmart. Thirteen BPW ladies made a difference in the

lives of about 40 people, helping them choose coats, hats, gloves &

boots. Kudos to the Kmart manager & staff for offering discounts & providing an early morning snack and to Jen Blessing from The

Salvation Army for making the arrangements.

Attention to all Latrobe BPW members.

You may not use the directory that you

receive to send out emails to members for your business. If you want to let the
