=================================================================================== President’s Message

Honoring Our

History,

Lighting Our Future

Greetings from your BPW Kansas President.

It is my pleasure to serve as part of your leadership team this year. I want to personally thank the 2918-2019 members who have stepped up to lead, either in your local or on the state level. We have an amazing year ahead of us and I am very excited. We also have an outstanding executive board. I’m so looking forward to great input, and great plans for this year. As we sit in this current window of a very important election in November, we must always remember the power of our vote – the power of our voice. Please do all you can to educate yourself on the candidates. We need to speak up and vote for those candidates that represent topics of importance to us as women and our

families. Always remember that EVERY vote counts. On an organizational level, I believe we need to look hard at what works in our organization and move past what doesn’t work. Just because we’ve always done it that way, doesn’t mean it works, right? Let’s remember our foundational

mission, but look for new and innovative ways to express and work out that mission. Remembering our goal “to promote full participation, equity, and economic self-sufficiency for Kansas working women”, we need to look at all forms of technology to advance our message. Invite in some new women, look for that “uncommon voice” – maybe someone who is not your typical BPW member. Redefine your organization by who you invite! Please join me at the Fall Conference and look for ways to energize ourselves and our local clubs. As always we will enjoy time together, learn and grow in ourselves, and in our ability to reach out and help others. Let us always honor our history and those women who walked the paths before us. Let us build on the trails they wore down for us – following in their footsteps but always using those footsteps to guide us further down the path. Let us commit to be UNSTOPPABLE! HALL OF FAME

====================================== The committee was honored to induct the newest members of the BPW/Kansas Hall of Fame at the Past State President’s Luncheon Saturday June 2, 2018. This year the committee made two Hall of Fame Inductions. Inducted into the posthumous Hall of Fame was Karen Divine, Ashland BPW. Inducted into the Member Hall of Fame was Past State President Julie Smith McDaniel. Past State President Jane Hanks conducted the induction ceremony. Special guest attending was Diane Smith sister of Julie. Julie Smith McDaniel was brought to BPW by her mother at the age of 18. Her mom wanted her to compete in the Young Careerist competition where she became the YC for the First District later winning the state YC competition. Julie was a Speaker at BPW/USA National Legislative Conference in Kansas City MO where she shared a stage with Senator Bob Dole.

Julie has been a member of KC Southside, College Boulevard, Greater Johnson County and Bonner Springs BPW. She served as Kansas/BPW president 2001-02 working her way through the chairs to be the leader of the state organization. Julie was involved in the Individual Development program being a participant and an instructor. She has served as a committee chair for many other presidents including Membership, Issues Management and Legislative to name a few. Julie was a member of the Board of Directors for the Kansas BPW/Educational Foundation, Inc. servings as secretary for many years. Karen Divine became a member of Ashland BPW in November 2002 after being nominated for the Community Woman of the Year Award and remained one until her untimely death in a car accident May 22, 2016. She liked the Woman of the year program and was curious about the activities of BPW and joined that very night. Karen graduated from Ashland High School and attended K-State for a semester before returning to work at the Vet Clinic in Ashland. She returned to school to become a registered nurse after helping animals for five years. She began her nursing career and her family in Oklahoma where she worked at Woodward and Buffalo. Following a divorce and the passing of her father she returned to Ashland and worked at Ashland Health Center. Karen’s nursing schedule often kept her from attending all BPW functions but she soon made BPW a priority and served as the Clubs president in 2005-06. The club honored her as the Club’s BPW woman of the year in the same year. She again served as president for the 2006-07 club year and attended her first state meeting and spoke about Ashland BPW activities. She presided over e club’s 60th anniversary celebration and hosted a reception for foreign exchange students in the community for the school year. Karen had a passion for nursing. She found being Director of Nursing was not for her as she enjoyed being hands on with the patients. She helped many nurses learn their craft. Her biggest achievement was instilling her passion for learning and her compassion for others in the many young CNA’s and nurses who crossed her path. She was patient and understanding, showing them by her actions and teaching them through her knowledge how to best care for and treat their patients. Karen worked at Comanche County Hospital and Ashland Health Center. Karen was also very generous. She took an active part in community events, often volunteering to help or donating food or funds if unable to attend. She was active in her church and loved her family and idolized her grandchildren.. The Hall of Fame Committee Jane Hanks – Chair Charlotte Shawver Kathy Niehoff

BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

====================================== Dr. LewAnn Schneider, Issues Management chair, presented the awards for Business of the Year Saturday June 2, 2018 at the 99th annual convention. During the General session Edward Jones Investments of Clay Center was named the BPW/Kansas Business of the Year with 15 or fewer employees for 2017-18. This business began sixteen years ago in Clay Center and has a four person office team of all women. Edward Jones has been ranked as one of the best employment opportunities for years especially for women. In May 2018, Penny Pennington was named managing partner, equivalent to CEO. Edward Jones has an educational career path for women and a policy of promoting from within their employees. Continuing education is paid for the employee via web-based programs, regional meetings and other venues. Additionally, Edward Jones has several license and certification programs for employees. All four employees have participated in educational opportunities. The local office works with the Clay County school system for financial literacy for students through presentations and providing educational material. Some of the benefits available to employees include: Parental Leave, Flexible Insurance and Pension Plans, Flex-time, and benefits for part-time employees. In addition to support from Edward Jones, the Clay Center office is very active in Clay Center. All team members are active in church and civic organizations. The office has been a supporter of the BPW/Clay Center Car Show each year. The last two years they have underwritten the t-shirts. Kerri Spielman, financial advisor and manager of the Clay Center office, is a BPW/Clay Center member. She shared her philosophy, “Educating and helping women understand and take initiative of their finance is a focus we have starting with our staff. With financial understanding and education comes freedom and empowerment. We want all to have

the opportunity to make choices without financial need or desperation driving their choice, but especially women so they can make independent, healthy choices.” Named Business of the year with more than 15 employees was Home Lumber and Supply Co. Ashland KS. The Home Lumber & Supply Co. is a 112 year old company headquartered in Ashland with retail locations in fourteen Kansas communities. The company provides building materials and hardware to contractors in the homebuilding and remodeling trades as well as to “do it yourselfers” and homeowners. Home Lumber creates jobs in these communities as well as a partnership in the local business communities. Home Lumber was recently named the Southwest Kansas Regional Winner for the 2017 Governor’s Award of Excellence – retail sales. The award is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Commerce. The word “home” creates the environment for Home Lumber and the working atmosphere within the company is “family” oriented. Currently, the staff includes 83 full-time and 21 part-time employees. It has 19 women employees with two female managers and one female officer. Home Lumber has a policy of promoting from within and offers educational opportunities that provide job advancement. Online Educational opportunities provide employees with product knowledge too. 10 years ago, Home Lumber initiated an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) for dual purposes; to create an ownership culture that shares those benefits with the people directly responsible for providing the service on an everyday basis; and to address a generational dilution of ownership interests. As the percent of employee ownership grows, the plan enhances the company’s overall goal of providing quality employment opportunities in rural areas. Home Lumber & Supply Company provides health insurance to its full-time employees and provides six weeks of parental leave. It is an equal opportunity employer and has an annual recognition and bonus program to acknowledge suppliers and employees who earn the distinction. Top performing stores are rewarded in a similar fashion. The Company’s branding as “your HOME Solutions Center” inscribes the commitment to the best possible service and products for the customer. Home Lumber is a regular contributor to local causes identified by employee owners in their communities. Locally, the company actively supports the Ashland Health Center, Ashland Community Foundation, WEPAC and the 2020 Housing Committee. Accepting the award for Home Lumber was John Humphreys President, Kim Hazen Office Manager and Nicole Brown, Yard bookkeeper.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE ====================================== Remember to cast your vote in the General Election on November 6 2018, Listed is General voting information for Kansas Citizens https://ballotpedia.org/Sample_Ballot_Lookup Use the above web address and put in your address and email address and get a preview of the election ballot. (Editor’s note – I just typed in Kansas and candidates for all races and parties showed up, click on ones you are interested in viewing and learn about their credentials)

Poll times

In Kansas, most polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Central Time, as Kansas mandates in its state laws that the polls must be open a minimum of 12 hours. Counties may open the polls earlier and close them later. If the polls close while a voter is in line, he or she will still be permitted to vote.

Kansas is divided between Central and Mountain Time zones.

Registration requirements

To vote in Kansas, one must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of Kansas. In order to register, an individual must be least 18 years old before the next election. Voters must register at least 21 days prior to Election Day. Registration can be done by completing and returning an application, either in person or by mail. Registration may also be completed online.

Voter ID requirements

In order to vote on Election Day in Kansas, a valid form of photo identification is required. Valid documents include driver's licenses, concealed carry handgun licenses, U.S. passports, and government employee, military, student, public assistance, and tribal IDs.

The Kansas Secure and Fair Elections Act was signed into law on April 18, 2011, by Governor Sam Brownback (R). Beginning January 1, 2012, Kansas voters were required to present photo ID when voting in person. Beginning January 1, 2013, persons registering to vote for the first time were required to prove U.S. citizenship. Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach was sued over the law by Arthur Spry and Charles Hamner, two elderly Kansas residents whose ballots were not counted in the November 2012 general election because they could not provide photo identification. The lawsuit stated that neither had a driver's license or access to the birth records needed to secure a photo ID. The federal trial was set for May 11, 2015. On April 23,

2014, the federal lawsuit was dismissed. Both Spry and Hamner asked to have the case dismissed when the trial was scheduled after the 2014 elections.

Early voting

Kansas permits no-excuse early voting. Early voting permits citizens to cast ballots in person at a polling place prior to an election. In states that permit no-excuse early voting, a voter does not have to provide an excuse for being unable to vote on Election Day. States that do not permit no-excuse early voting may still permit some citizens to vote early, provided that they have valid reasons for doing so; this practice is known as in-person absentee voting. As of January 30, 2018, 34 states and the District of Columbia permitted no-excuse early voting.

Absentee voting

All voters are eligible to vote absentee in Kansas. There are no special eligibility requirements for voting absentee.

To vote absentee, an application must be received by the Friday prior to the election. A returned absentee ballot must then be received by election officials by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.
