ISSUES MANAGEMENT=====================================

Issues Management Chair, Cindy Simons600 Normandy Rd Newton, Kansas 67114316-282-0944 – [email protected]

What do we want and need from Issues Management in 2014-2015? As I prepare my first notification for the Advocate, I asked myself, what would I expect from this committee? I answered myself by saying that I would want to be kept well informed of programs and projects that benefit the local organizations and hope that the programs meet the needs of all working women. I am excited that our local organizations can share and communicate ideas and projects which make our journey this year one that will promote and honor all women, and where we can continue to work toward what we are passionate about, our vision and mission of BPW/Kansas.

Our Committee’s Goals are to:

1. Keep in regular contact with local organizations to identify important issues. Issues of most interest to the local members.

2. Provide local organizations with implementation and data sources that will assist them in such issues.

3. Provide the local organizations with probable issues for all working women, topics relevant to all women in all communities, assist them in implementation of any and all issues of relevance, of their choice or concern.

4. Evaluate achievements of local organizations and report to the Board of Directors.

5. Assist Local Organizations with direction and implementation of all issues, data and items needed for Business Women’s Week, Woman of the Year and Business of the Year.

Be reminded that National Business Women’s Week (NBWW) is fast approaching. Issues management will be actively promoting BPW/Kansas during this third week in October 19th – 25th, 2015. This is our week to shine! It is our opportunity to acknowledge the accomplishments of the working woman and to spotlight other BPW activities. Issues Management will be providing ideas on how to implement programs and projects during this week. We also want to hear from your Local Organization in how you celebrate and honor outstanding women. We will share ideas with each other.

Issues Management has already ascertained from our Governor a request for proclamation for NBWW week in October. We have received a reply and our request will be granted! We encourage all locals to visit their City and County leaders in requesting their proclamation.

All locals who plan to perform at least one activity for and during Business Women’s Week will receive recognition at BPW/Kansas Convention in June 2015.

Please send me your ideas and planned projects on how your Local Organization will celebrate National Business Women’s Week, and/or any new and exciting programs you have implemented or experienced. I am a new chairperson and have much to learn but I am also very willing to do what I can to assist in having an outstanding year, a year in which our journey together will make a difference!

======================================MEMBERSHIP

======================================As the year is getting pumped up, hope that you are too, along with your local. I have heard a lot of positive actions happening in each local regarding membership. One of the things that I have decided to do is make trips to each local and visit with them. My first trip was Ottawa where they are pumping up their membership with three new members and two more that are potentials. Sitting in their meeting I was awed at how quickly the new members jumped in to help out, volunteer or give ideas. The program that evening was presented by one of the new members. Yea!

With new members comes leadership, remember that our new members have not been a part of this amazing organization for as long as you. We really have to strive to show what we are about, what benefits we have to offer and where we can still go.

Things to keep in mind: Recruiting is an everyday event. Recruiting happens

when we least expect it. Show what BPW means to you.

BPW is for everyone, some women get scared by the word professional……think about how to phrase your words!

If you are having a membership drive or something to do with membership let me know and I will try to make it out to your local. Otherwise I will be heading out to each local randomly.

Ladies keep pumping up. I challenge every local to change up their meeting place for one meeting or have a gathering outside of BPW meetings for everyone to get together and mingle and invite friends to join in.

======================================WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY

======================================When: Always August 26th

Women's Equality Day commemorates the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote.

In 1971, after much work, and at the urging of U.S. Representative Bella Abzug (D-NY), Congress designated August 26 each year as “Women’s Equality Day.” This day was selected to commemorate the passage of the 19th

Amendment to the Constitution on August 26, 1920. This amendment granted women the right to vote.  This was the culmination of decades of effort by women suffragettes and other groups.  Their efforts dated back to first women’s rights convention in 1848 at Seneca Falls, New York.

Celebrate this day in a number of ways. First, stop and celebrate the accomplishments made in gaining the right to vote, and towards equality for women. Women's rights groups suggest you continue to be involved in pursuing full and equal rights for women in all areas and in all issues.
