The start of anew journey

Hello, and welcome to this, the first issueof a new online publication calledInsignia Motor Yachting.

Over the coming months, Insignia will carve a niche for itself in the motoryachting community. The magazinecomes to you from a company withnearly 15 years of experience of

publishing online magazines. We will provide what I hope will bea rich and interesting combination of digital magazine contentand web TV. Movies are all over the web today, and combinesuperbly with the stories, features and reviews that we create.

What is our area of interest? Well, it is the 10-100 metremotor yachting sector. That’s a broad spectrum, I realise, but Ibelieve that the purchaser of a 20 metre motor yacht can easilybecome a customer for a much larger boat, whether purchasingor chartering.

As a digital publication, Insignia is a global product from dayone and will bring you features from around the world. We havean outpost in the Pacific North West – Seattle, to be specific, and this launch issue, and the second issue too, include featuresfrom this fantastic motor yachting destination.

We won’t limit ourselves to just motor yachts, either. I lovespending time on the water, but I have other interests, and Iknow you do too. So, Insignia will bring you features on othertopics that we think will be of interest – cars, hotels, property, watches, luggage, food, wine – the list is endless. All of thismeans we’re looking at lifestyle compliments for the motoryachting enthusiast. We kick off this month with a review of theLotus Evora – a pocket rocket that provides the thrills andglamour of a Ferrari, for a fraction of the cost. And it’s morelikely to fit on your yacht, too!

So come along on this journey with us, and bring your friendsalong too – pass this magazine on to anyone you think will beinterested. Subscribing is free of charge, so everyone can comeon board.

And talk to me too – my email address is [email protected].

I look forward to getting to know you.

At 40 metres in length, and with a£14 million price tag, the Sunseeker40 Metre Yacht, which was launchedat the 2010 Southampton Boat Show,is a rather special addition to theSunseeker range.

Sunseeker had wheeled out celebritiesfor the launch ceremony. Theo Paphitis ofthe TV show Dragon’s Den handled theribbon-cutting, and Katherine Jenkins, theunfeasibly svelte, young and attractiveopera singer sang her heart out from therear deck, to the delight of Southamptonboat show attendees. For copyrightreasons we’re not allowed to featureKatherine in our movie, but we didcapture a few moments on film, whichwill have to remain a personal souvenir.

Following the launch event itself,Insignia’s Vince Holton was given a tourof the 40M Yacht, and, in order to makethe experience one that could be shared, took the camera crew with him.

You wood, wouldn’t you?

We’re confident that Sunseeker won’t beupset if we comment that the smallerboats in its range, while never for onemoment seeming anything other thanthe exclusive, glamorous beasts that theyare, do still offer the owner or guest

plenty of the white GRP experience. Andthen you step onto something like the40M Yacht, and can immediatelyexperience the difference that a ratherbigger cheque will buy you.

to be taken to boat shows before theyhave taken delivery) had specified aprincipally dark-ish wood interior –walnut, we believe. The quality of thewoodwork, which permeated all but thecrew quarters, was exquisite. The completetour took some time, as a yacht of this sizegoes well beyond the realms of the usualpleasure boat. It’s easy to lose count of the number of bedrooms, bathrooms andeven salons – for the record, the 40Maccommodates up to 12 guests and ninecrew on four decks and there are multiplerelaxation and dining areas. Have a look atthe deck layout illustration for some idea. And if any of those guests are in a hurryto get anywhere, you might be interestedto know that, dependent on which engineshave been spec’d, this 200 ton behemothwill speed their passage at an amazing 25 - 30 knots.

Recession?

While reviewing a new yacht such as theSunseeker 40M, it is impossible to stiflethoughts of recessions, bankingmeltdowns, and excoriatingly difficultfinancial circumstances. And yet ... Whenwe talked to Sunseeker spokespersonGemma Langridge, in the quiet calm ofthe Sunseeker press suite, it seems that itis the most exclusive (i.e. expensive) partof Sunseeker’s range that is enjoying thebest fortunes. Langridge told Insignia thatsales of 30M+ boats are holding up well, even seeing some year-on-year growth, and consequently this part of Sunseeker’sbusiness development is gathering bothfocus and momentum.

It is unlikely that a Sunseeker 40Myacht will be joining the Insignia fleet anytime soon, and indeed the price tag mightput this boat out of most people’s range, but we’re sure that Insignia MotorYachting’s readers will be more than keento see what it is that makes the 40 MetreYacht special.

But that doesn’t mean that you can’tenjoy the experience, so now it is yourturn. Put your feet up and sip thatMartini, as you watch the Insignia videotour of the Sunseeker 40M yacht.

Sealine used the Southampton boatshow as the launch venue for its F42 flybridge boat. No expense wasspared and Sealine even arranged for a fly pass by a World War II Spitfirefighter plane!

Just as Princess regards its 42 footflybridge boat as a very significant partof its range – if any £300,000+ boat canbe regarded as ‘bread and butter’, thenthis is it – then the F42 occupies thesame place in the portfolio for Sealine.

The new F42 replaces the current F42/5.The F42 has Sealine’s distinctive extendedflybridge first used on the F46 launchedlast year. There is space for six to dine incomfort around a large dining table, plusthe ability to create a double sun bed aftby folding down the backrest on the rearseats. There is a central double helm, twofurther forward facing seats, a large coolbox and spacious storage lockers.

The single level deck has a three partsliding door joining the cockpit to thesaloon. In the saloon, an L-shapedseating area is on the starboard side withfurther seating on the port side. Theseating area can be converted into anoccasional double berth. The open plangalley is located forward. A feeling ofspace and light is created with the largewrap around windscreen which alsoprovides panoramic views.

In the cockpit there is an L shapedseating area with a large lazeretteunderneath. The cockpit is large enoughfor entertaining and has an optionalfridge and grill to add to the enjoymentof alfresco dining.

There are two cabins, offering fiveberths as standard with the master cabinlocated forward. A bonded skylight abovethe bed provides extra light. The forwardcabin has separate ensuite shower andtoilet compartments.

The F42 offers a second cabinamidships, that can be configured eitheras a triple, twin or double. The secondcabin also offers an ensuite shower and separate toilet with a skylight. Therewill be the option to have additional

storage in the mid cabin in lieu of thethird berth.

The new hull is based on the designconcept developed for the SC47 and F46.It also has the advantage of joystickcontrolled Volvo IPS engines formaximum manoeuvrability.

Priced at around £ 313,000 for thestandard model excluding VAT whenfitted with twin Volvo Penta IPS500 (740BHP total 2 engines). The boat will alsobe available with twin Volvo Penta IPS600(870 BHP total 2 engines).

Watch the InsigniaTV video and seemore of the F42, while Chris O'Connor, recently appointed Managing Director ofSealine, talk about this new mid-rangeflybridge sports cruiser.

Princess 42

It is fair to say that the 42 has become aniconic Princess model, one of a numberof fast motor yachts from the establishedbuilders that have created a categorythat has proven very popular as an idealfamily cruiser.

The latest 42 from Princess adopts alean and dynamic profile with wrap-around windscreen and larger, sleekerwindows and portlights.

Triple sliding glass doors link thecockpit and saloon, giving a light and airy

feel to the interior, accentuated by thewrap-around windows. Inside, the senseof space is enhanced by thecontemporary, rectilinear furniture, comprising a U-shaped sofa and diningtable and moveable 2-seater sofa whichcan be converted into an additionaldouble bed for occasional guests.

A few steps down, the open galleycomes with a choice of gas or electrichob while a large fridge-freezer andcombination microwave oven are fittedas standard. There is plenty of storagespace. The lower accommodation

Salterns Brokerage launched theGreenline 33 Hybrid at theSouthampton Boat Show. Two modelswere given their UK debut; the firstshowing a full solar roof and thesecond showing an electricallyoperated sliding roof.

The 33 Hybrid was a shared vision ofthree companies - J & J Design, VWMarine and Seaway. The three companiessay that the Greenline Hybrid 33 is theworld’s first production hybrid and solarpowered boat, and list new innovationssuch as the protected Superdisplacement low drag hull whichreduces fuel consumption and allowsefficient electric propulsion using powersupplied by battery and solar power.

The Greenline 33 is claimed to use upto four times less fossil fuel in a year thana planing powerboat and is completelyemission-free in electric mode.

The 33 is powered by a hybrid drivethat lets you choose between two drivemodes - diesel or electric. Unlike today’smodern cars which still need to burn fuel

to produce electricity, the GreenlineHybrid is capable of collecting, storingand using power from the sun throughsolar roof panels. All the systems areelectronically controlled, automaticallycharging the battery when there is anadequate supply of daylight or when thediesel engine is running.

Insignia spoke to Salternsrepresentative Russell Hayden, andenquired about just how far we would be

The 33, which has a starting price of£107,730 + VAT, has already won anumber of awards, including the Swedishenvironment award in Stockholm, theEuropean Boat of the Year 2010 and theSlovenian Environment Award.

Could this be a preview of the future ofboating, we wonder?

True to form, Fairline was there at theplate. The smallest in the FairlineSquadron range, the new 42 model isstill, according to Fairline, ‘every inch aSquadron’ and carries many of the designand technology features of Fairline’slarger flybridge motor yachts.

The accommodation on the Squadron42 includes a light, airy saloon with fulllength windows, which leads to thegalley. In line with recent trends, expansive use of glazing throughout theboat creates bright and well-litaccommodation, from the galley to themaster cabin. The starboard guest cabinalmost doubles in useable size when itstwin doors to en-suite are open. Fairlinehas used ‘floating’ furniture to increasethe appearance of floor size throughoutthe cabins.

There are two power options. Whenpowered by 2 x Volvo Penta D6-370 EVCShaft Diesel engines, the anticipated topspeed is 28 knots. When powered by 2 xD6-435 EVC Shaft Diesel engines, theanticipated top speed is 31 knots.

The price of the Squadron 42 startsfrom £314,200 excluding local taxes.

Cruising ‘open’style

Launched at the beginning of 2010 andon show at Southampton, the new twincabin, twin en-suite Fairline Targa 44OPEN cruiser reflects Fairline’s trendtowards large, open cockpits. The

thinking is that customers of the entry-level Targa 38 will be able to upgrade toa cruiser with an even greater cockpitspace.

The accommodation includes a mastercabin with en-suite access and oversizeddouble bed, and an aft cabin with twinbeds that slide together to form a king-sized bed. The aft cabin also boasts alarge en-suite bathroom with day accessfrom the saloon.

Volvo stern drive engines powerthe Targa 44 OPEN and an optionalstern drive Joystick system isavailable for manoeuvringfunctionality. When powered withtwin Volvo D4-300 EVC Stern DriveDiesel engines, the anticipated topspeed of the entry-level Targa 44OPEN is 28 knots and the price starts from £307,600 excluding local taxes.

This racy 58 footer is a three cabin, threeen-suite express cruiser with an optionalfourth-crew cabin and en-suite. Themaster cabin and en-suite are placedforward. This provides full-widthaccommodation and with only theforedeck above, overhead glazing allowsthe cabin to benefit from naturaldaylight.

Where specified, the fourth cabin issuited for guests or crew and featuresglazing in the transom and an en-suiteoption. It is fair to say that the ability toinclude a fourth cabin is rare on anexpress cruiser of this size.

The enclosed, single-level living andgalley space can be converted to offer anopen-air space as the roof slides open atthe touch of a button and the panoramic

3m side windows retract. This allowsguests to enjoy the freedom of fresh airfrom the galley to the transom, a featurethat Fairline claims is unique on a boat ofthis size and price range. By contrast, when a closed space is required to shieldfrom rain or sun, the cockpit features apowered aft sunshade.

The stern platform features a concealed

When powered by 2 x Volvo Penta D13-800 EVC Shaft Diesel engines, theanticipated top speed of the Targa 58GRAN TURISMO is 32 knots and the pricestarts from £870,400 excluding local taxes.

Aquastar 84' HE

Aquastar showed its new 84' HE motoryacht at the Southampton Boat Show, the HE standing for “high efficiency” hull, which is intended to maximise range. ThisAquastar 84 has been styled by “Design

Unlimited”. Owners can spec the layoutand aesthetics and style interiors to a co-ordinated look. It must be said that theboat on show at Southampton was a verypleasing and welcoming design.

Guernsey-based Aquastar told Insigniathat fuel used is kept to a minimum dueto the good balance of beam to hulllength and a very slippery hull, which isalso claimed to be very comfortable in ahead sea, avoiding the pounding of aplanning hull driven a speed.

The Caterpillar C18 1150 HP twin shaftdrive is standard fit, or the C15 860 HP isavailable as an option. Despite the sizeof this boat, Aquastar claims the 84 iseasily handled by 2 people with thehydraulic bow and stern thrusters withremotes. The bathing deck platform ishydraulically operated.

To compliment the new 84's ZF poddrive with counter rotating propellers, which is claimed to provide a 20%reduction in fuel consumption, joystickdocking control is offered.

BOAT SHOW REVIEWS:

2010 Seattle Boat ShowInsignia’s Vince Holton travelled to thePacific North West Coast of the USA,and visited the 2010 Seattle Boatshow, which took place at theShilshole Bay Marina, which is only 20minutes from downtown Seattle.

Prior to travelling out to Seattle,Insignia had been talking to ClipperMotor Yacht’s outpost here in the UK.When a visit to the Pac-West show wasmentioned, the Clipper guys immediatelychimed in with “there’ll be plenty oftrawler-style boats there!” And, werethere? Yes, there were!

This is because of the nature of thesailing that takes place in this part of theworld. Although some sailers do head outof Seattle and turn left (i.e. South), mostsail in and around the waters of thePuget Sound, the San Juan Islands andDesolation Sound, and, by turning rightinstead of left, they are heading upthrough Canada towards Alaska – anextremely popular destination.

Sailing in these waters needs aparticular type of tough, reliable, all-weather boat. That’s why, although thereare open boats for use mainly in theinland waterways, for the intercoastal, island and open water sailor, the trawler-style, or expedition boat is the favoured

choice. This is Nordic Tugs and Nordhavnterritory, you know (we know, we know,NordHavn is a Californian company, buttheir boats are rather popular in thePacific Northwest).

Watch the Insignia show report here.Vince chatted with boat manufacturerssuch as Northwest Yachts, and RangerTugs, and with George Harris, who is bothpresident of the Northwest Marine TradeAssociation and the organiser Seattleshow's organiser, in order to learn moreabout motor yachting in the PacificNorthwest.

And no, your eyes aren’t deceiving you.The sun was shining, and thetemperature was 32 degrees C - almostunheard of for rainy Seattle!

Boats, barbecues, balls ....Before the next issue of Insignia ispublished, Vince Holton is back in Seattleagain to film another feature. What’s thisone about? Well, the subject of this movieis boat-gating. Don’t know what that is?Well, you may know that in the US, a lot ofpeople take their pick-up trucks to footballgames and have a bit of a party in the carpark before, or even during the game. It’svery social, the barbecues typically sit onthe tail-gate of the pick-up, and so it’scalled tail-gating.

You probably wouldn’t think that you cando the same with your boat, but in Seattleyou can, as you’ll see soon followingVince’s visit to a Seattle Seahawks game.

It’s the year of the hybrid, it seems.Elsewhere in this issue we look at theGreenline 33, and now Azimut Yachtstells Insignia that the Magellano 50 isthe first 50' motor yacht that can sailcontinuously, everywhere, while beingkind to the environment, thanks to herclass A homologation and thecontextual Rina Green Plus classnotation.

The world preview of the Magellano 50takes place at the Genoa Boat Showduring October 2010. This 50-footer, themid-sized model of Azimut’s Magellanorange, is claimed to be the first to offeran outdoor saloon in the bow and fouralternative layouts below deck, and isalso the first craft to be fitted with the

new Easy Hybrid system, a projectcreated by the Azimut-Benetti R&Ddepartment that allows her to cruisesilently at up to 8 knots using electricmotors.

The Magellano 50 meets thereqirements of the RINA Green Plusnotation. Features include: low-emissionengines (the Magellano 50 is powered bytwo latest-generation 425 mHP Cumminscommon rail engines, with electronicfuel-consumption management); high-performance hull and propellers; anti-UVfilm applied to reduce heat exchangethrough the glass surfaces; tracking ofconsumption and tank levels, with acharging and discharging log; LEDlighting; infusion lamination of the

principal fibreglass components, aprocedure carried out in the Azimutshipyard in Avigliana, which has beenawarded the ISO 14001 Environmentstandard certificate.

Further certification, from the FSC(Forest Stewardship Council), guaranteesthat the wood used on board comes fromforests that are managed in conformitywith eco-sustainability criteria(scheduled felling, and replanting thetrees used), and that the working processis sufficiently eco-compatible to respectsocial standards.

This is sounding like one green boat.Even though it is orange. Or blue.

Looking a little closer at what’s underthe hood, the Magellano 50 offers a

hybrid propulsion configuration thatAzimut believes will be chosen by anincreasing number of owners, considering the advantages: almosttotal elimination of noise (up to 80%),greater cruising comfort and a furtherreduction of consumption during shortday-cruising outings. Hybrid propulsionis provided by backing up the traditionalengines with two 20 Kilowatt electricmotors connected to batteries, whichare charged on shore and kept topped-up by the on-board generators. Theelectric motors operate when the dieselpropulsion systems are stopped, givingthe Magellano 50 a top speed of 8knots. As soon as a higher speed isrequired, the traditional engines kick in.It’s possible to switch from onepropulsion system to the otherautomatically, so the skipper only has todecide the vessel's speed.

The Magellano range is designed forlong hauls, and the Magellano 50 ishomologated in class A and features theDual Mode hull, a semi-displacement hulldesigned by Bill Dixon.

On board, the gangways and warpareas are wide and safe. The tender canbe hoisted onto the bathing platform andstowed in a semi-garage beneath thecockpit. Other convenience and comfortfeatures include a joystick formanoeuvring, the Seakeeper gyroscopicstabilization system, touch screen VDUfor on-board monitoring, high externalhandrails protecting every part of themain deck and the flybridge, and thepresence of plenty of grabrails positionedeverywhere they are needed.

The lower deck design allows theowner to choose between 4 options. Inthe area between the master cabin, located midships, and the VIP cabin in

the bow, it is possible to choose thestudio and guest cabin configuration, orstudio and second dinette, or a seconddinette and guest cabin, or, finally, astudio and separate utility area, withlaundry and dryer and additionalstowage space. This ought to be enoughoptions to keep everybody happy..

Just a year since the launch of the firstMagellano model, the Magellano 50 takesher place beside the larger Magellano 74and will soon be followed by a thirdmodel in the 40' series.

Even in the rarified air of the motoryacht sector, owners are sensitive torunning costs and the need to (at least beseen to) be green. The Magellano 50 isundoubtedly an impressive and highlycapable long-range yacht.

Don’t be surprised to see many morehybrids coming down the launch ramp inthe near future.

Pershing creates waves

Pershing’s ‘new-wave’ styling isspreading fast across the range. Itbegan with the Pershing 72, then the80, the 64 and the 92, and now it’sbeen applied to their new 50-footer,the Pershing 50.1 (LOA 50ft 11in).

For lovers of Pershing performance, and this is a fast boat from a racy, Italianmanufacturer, remember, the 50.1 isavailable with surface drives, andpowered by 900hp MAN engines, acombination which gives her a top speedof 45 knots (52mph). Alternatively, she isalso available in a conventional shaftdrive version, with 800hp MAN enginesand v-drive gearboxes, delivering a topspeed of 36.5 knots (42mph). Despite theengines being close to the stern in bothversions, Pershing told Insignia thatthere is still room for an optional crewcabin aft of the engine room if required.

One obvious advance over theprevious generation Pershings is theaddition of much larger windows tobrighten the accommodation areas. Onthe 50.1 there are big windows on bothsides of the owner’s suite in the bow,

two windows in each of the aft cabins, and two windows on either side of thelower deck saloon and galley area.Interior finishes are in pale blondebleached oak for the walls andfurniture, and a choice ofcomplementary fabrics for the softfurnishings.

On the main deck, the views from thesemi-enclosed upper saloon arevirtually uninterrupted in everydirection thanks to Pershing’s ‘new-wave’ window style. And to create moreof an open-air feel in warm weather, the hardtop has a part-glazed carbonfibre section that slides open at thetouch of a button.

In recent times, the easiest way tospot a Pershing has been by their colour. The metallic silver finish has becomesomething of a Pershing trademark, soaficionados will be pleased to know thatthis is also an option on the new 50.1.

And the price? Well, with surfacedrives it is Euros 1,035,000 ex VAT(approx £877,000), or with shafts it isEuros 895,000 ex VAT (approx £758,000).

The name Jeanneau doesn’t appearanywhere on the new Prestige 500 S,but this boat is an extension to theFrench company’s stable. Prestige isnow a standalone brand and will bepromoted as such from now on.

The 500 S is described as a large“coupé”, large in this instance meaningan LOA of 15.2 metres, characterised byan interior saloon with a large, openingroof and a sliding panel aft, which givesonto a cockpit “lounge” on the samelevel (with a tender garage).

The 500S is Volvo powered, 2 x 435swith IPS 2 transmission.

The large, panoramic, U-shapedsaloon impresses by its space andpervading light (in the style of thePrestige 60). Its glazed door panels andlarge opening roof open it upcompletely to the outside.

Much is being made of what is beingdescribed as the “owner’s suite” - cabinand head compartment – which isnotable for its private access from thesaloon and the space that it has been

given. The wide hull windows, the interiordecor together with the style of the headcompartment make it a comfortableplace.

The guest cabin has a double berth, which can convert into two singles, and

its private head compartment can also beused for day guests.

The third cabin offers two single berths, that can be converted into a double, amore comfortable idea than the bunkberths generally offered in a third cabin.

And at times like this, sir, or madam, needs a suitable conveyance. In thatsame way that Insignia Motor Yachtingwill entertain and inform with videofeatures presenting interesting, exciting- and perhaps just new - boats, we willprovide regular features that includeexotic, classic and luxury cars.

And, although we hate to use the word, this ‘lifestyle’ (ugh!) section will alsoinclude other subject matter, perhapsincluding watches, hotels anddestinations, luggage – whatever. Feel freeto tell us what you would like to see.

In our first feature we will look at theLotus Evora. This was supplied to us byStratton Motor Company, which will beInsignia’s partner in automotive features.Stratton is one of the foremost supercarsuppliers in the UK, and is an AstonMartin, Lotus and Morgan dealer of long-standing. performance and delivers a new level ofacceleration, cornering and braking to thedriver at 3g+ via its 1000 bhp/tonneperformance specifications. An F1 car forthe road? Very possibly.

Anyway, back to the Evora. I spent a dayin the company of this car with Stratton’sGuy Munday, himself an acknowledged

Transport for Lotus-eaters

As wonderful as life on board may be, there are times when you just have to step back on dry land.

Page 23: LAUNCH ISSUE – NEWS, REVIEWS AND PLENTY OF MOVIES!€¦ · BOAT SHOW REVIEWS: 2010 SOUTHAMPTON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW 4 Sunseeker 40 Metre Yacht Sunseeker spares no expense at

expert on Lotus matters – and mostthings automotive, for that matter. Take alook at the InsigniaTV video feature, whichshows the Lotus Evora on the road, whileGuy and I discuss its merits over awaterside coffee.

The name "Evora", by the way, continuesthe Lotus tradition of beginning modelnames with an "E". The name is derivedfrom the words evolution, vogue, andaura.

The Evora’s styling, elegant proportionsand mid-engined 2+2 configuration makeit an exclusive proposition – at the time ofits launch, Lotus claimed this was the only2+2 mid-engined couple on sale today. We may need to revise that, though, because as I write this, Lotus is about toreveal one or more completely new cars atthe Paris motor show.

Perhaps the single most outstandingfeature of the Evora is the cars chassis. The Evora’s smaller sibling, the Elise, iswell documented as one of the besthandling cars ever made. And yet, theEvora’s extruded aluminium chassis is twoand a half times as stiff as that of theElise. This has allowed the Lotus engineersto attach extremely compliant suspensionto each corner, delivering a limo-like ridein a car that will run rings aroundconventional, stiffly-sprung sports cars. Askateboard, this is not.

Full beam owner’s cabin

The Evora is accommodating in otherways. Comparing again to the Elise, theEvora is much easier to get into, and once

you are in, it is considerably morespacious. The interior was apparentlyconceived to be large enough to allowtaller persons to fit, such as two 99thpercentile (6'5") American males. At justover six feet tall, I would not want tospend much time in the rear seats, butthis car would allow the enthusiast tocontinue to feed his motoring passionfor a few more years into fatherhoodthan most any comparable sports car. So,get thee behind me, people carrier, mylife is not over yet!

Should our hotshot Evora owner havemellowed just a little, the rear luggagecompartment (I hesitate to use the word‘boot’, as this publication is a globalproduct) is big enough to carry a set ofgolf clubs. But you just wouldn’t, wouldyou?

(E)motive power

And what propels the Evora? Well, it is a3.5 litre DOHC V6 dual VVT-I enginemated to a six speed gearbox, delivering276 hp (280 PS) and 258 lbs.ft of torque, delivering 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds (0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds) and a topspeed of 163mph. But not around themarina, ideally. This engine would befamiliar to Toyota Camry drivers, but Idare say that the overall drivingexperience would not.

Some have said that the fit and finishof the Evora are not up to Toyota, or –dare we say it? – German sports carstandards, but in honesty this aspect didnot disappoint me. I questioned thedecision to combine an interior of an

unusual – and this is hard tocommunicate without becomingindelicate – shade of brown, with a fairlylow-key British Racing Green exteriorcolour, but that is a factor that is entirelyunder the user-chooser’s control. I didthink that the sat-nav was somewhatbehind the times, but the technologymarket does move a lot faster thanautomotive development schedules, andit must be frustratingly difficult for thecar makers to keep up.

How much would it cost to get behindthe wheel of a Lotus Evora? Well, the UKlist price is £48,000. The Lotus optionslist makes it easy to make the actualpurchase cost considerably higher, should you feel the need to go for someof the performance-enhancing options, and perhaps a few glittery gewgaws too.

Did I enjoy my time with the LotusEvora? I most certainly did. The Evoradelivers truly stunning handling in a carthat is not only extremely fast, but isalso entirely capable of being used on aday to day basis. Oh, and it looksspectacular too. Even in the Lotus F1-team mimicking green that this Evorawas painted, this was a car that hadonlookers falling off pavements andwalking into lamp posts as it drove past.

So, if you are looking for a compactand yet exotic supercar to tuck away onyour superyacht support vessel, theEvora roundly deserves a place on theselection list.

Oh, and why not keep one at the villaoutside Puerto Banus, Portofino,Sandbanks, Mina Seyahi, Monaco, etc, etc .....

Insignia Motor Yachting – the back story

Introduced by Vince Holton, Editor-in-chief

So, this new online magazine hasappeared, focusing its interest on the 10-100M motor yacht sector. What is itall about, you wonder?

Well, Insignia is a new product from acompany that has 12+ years experience of publishing online magazines. It’s unlikelyyou will ever see this name in an Insigniaarticle again, but the company behindInsignia is called Click InformationTerminology.

Since 1998, Clickhas been publishing abusiness-to-businessmagazines, one ofwhich is calledIncisor. It covers theshort-range wirelesssector – that means

stuff like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and othertechnologies that connect gadgets togetherwithout wires. Incisor has been a verysuccessful product, and has a history of

working with clients such as Nokia,Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Jabra and many ofthe organisations that develop, manage andcontrol these technology specifications.

If you are at all interested, you can look atIncisor’s host web site here.

Why mention Incisor, a B2B productcovering work going on in the backgroundof the technology market? Well, becauseIncisor blazed a trail, combining the benefitsof an online magazine with a web TVchannel and a backbone web site that tiedthings together.

Global subscribers liked the way that theycould receive an e-magazine in AdobeAcrobat pdf format, allowing them to storeit on their PC and read it whenever, wherever. Live links in the magazine allowedthem to click through to movies or websites. They could archive the magazine sothat they could refer back to it later, evenprint it out, if they wanted to. Traditionalprint magazines weren’t like this. This truly

was the epitomy of the hackneyed concept –multi-media.

Over the last couple of years, we havespent more and more time creating webvideo, some of which has complimented our editorial features, and some has beenstandalone. The simple fact is that web video works today, and works superbly withonline magazines.

Advertisers and sponsors like the e-magazine concept, too, as it broadcaststheir messages to a global, not local, audience, it benefits from forwarding bysubscribers so that the audience gets everbigger, and, what’s more, the ‘e-‘ formatmeans that they can embed clickable links in their advertising or features, allowinginterested parties to go straight to theadvertisers web site, a movie or even acampaign-specific landing page on that web site – the readers like this bit too!

Along the way, we have published anumber of other magazine products using

the same concept. But they have all beenB2B publications.

I have long thought that the same ideawould work extremely well for a consumer-facing publication, and the fact that you arereading these words will tell you that Idecided to do something about it.

Why boats, you ask? Well, the simplestand most obvious response to that is that Iam personally interested in motor yachts, Ihave been for many years. What’s more, mybusiness partner has a Fairline Targa and aboat sales web site that enjoys substantialonline traffic. So there is synergy there too.

And the motor yacht market is big – verybig. Pick up any boat magazine and itbursting with features, and – crucially to apublisher – advertising. Even in thisrecessionary climate, the motor yachtingsector is supporting a healthy publishingeffort. So Insignia Motor Yachting is here, and now.

I don’t yet pretend to be an expert in thesector. That said, I knew nothing about thewireless semiconductor industry when Ilaunched Incisor. By applying an appropriateamount of time to learning, and by listeningto industry experts, I have built theknowledge I need, and Incisor has becomerespected in the industry. While I’m learning,I’m ready to ask dumb questions. You soonget found out if you try to be somethingyou are not.

It will take a while for the motor yachtmanufacturers to come to know, respect, and maybe even like us. It will be interestingto see which companies are most receptive, and which ones recognise the opportunitywe are creating.

Over the coming months, we will buildInsignia’s content. This first issue benefitedfrom going through the content-gatheringphase at the same time as the Southampton

Boat Show was taking place. That showcaseevent gave us a great opportunity to meetwith many boat companies in one place andat one time. And to gather plenty of newsstories.

This means that this issue of Insigniaprobably has more news stories than willnormally be the case. But we recognise thatpeople do like to know what is going on inthe world.

We will include boat reviews, interviewswith designers, go on exciting andinteresting voyages, and we will dream upspecial features that look at the world ofmotor yachting from some differentperspectives.

We will visit shows. I travel a lot, and aswell as having attended the Southamptonshow, I also visited the 2010 Seattle BoatShow a few weeks ago. There is a reportwith this issue. I’m back in Seattle againbefore the next issue is published, filming an InsigniaTV feature on boat-gating. I explained what that is earlier in themagazine, so I won’t repeat myself here.

We will also include content that isn’tdirectly to do with motor yachts. Cars, forexample. You don’t have to be a genius toknow that the same people who likeglamorous motor yachts like glamorous cars, too. In this issue we look at the Lotus Evora, and in next month’s issue we will review theCaparo T1, surely the nearest thing you canget to a Formula 1 car for the road. Can’twait for that one!

It won’t just be cars, either. It could bewatches. It could be houses, or hotels.Luggage, clothing – whatever our readerswant to see. Let us know, by the way.

This comes down to the fact that we arelooking at ‘lifestyles’. I can’t tell you howmuch it hurts to use that word, but I hope itsucceeds in getting the picture across.

So, welcome to the world of InsigniaMotor Yachting. Personally, I’m very excitedabout this new venture. I’d like you, thereaders, to be part of the journey. If you likeInsignia, pass it on to friends and otherboating enthusiasts – there are no copyrightor digital rights management issues here! They too can subscribe, free of charge.
