Tents & Shelters
Ridge tents are remarkably stable and range from tiny one-person tents up to multiple people tents. They are easy to pitch.
Ridge Tents
The sides are more vertical which allows more headroom. Stability is good in smaller models but, unlike the ridge tent, domes can get less stable as they scale up in size.
Dome Tent
Geodesic- line means the shortest route between two points on earth. Nowadays, it’s used to describe a tent where the poles crisscross over the surface, intersecting to form triangles. This distributes the stress across the structure, making it the most stable type of tent for extreme weather conditions. This is the tent you would take if you wanted to climb Mount Everest.
Geodesic/Semi-Geodesic Tent
Easy to set up because it springs open. However they are only suitable for good weather conditions and for one/two nights at a festival. Does have decent sleeping space.
Instant or quick pitch Tents
Rare, usually expensive, and surprisingly heavy.
Inflatable Tents
Come is large variety of sizes and styles. Is the most common for family and commonly found at campsites.
Tunnel Tents
Are some of the largest tents on the market. Most usually have a central living area with separate living areas or pods. Since their so big you have to find a big enough spot for them to fit. Some campgrounds charge extra because they can take up to two tent spots.
Pod Living Tents
Still popular tents. Good space and headroom plus stability. Can take longer to put up due to how heavy the tent is.
Frame Tent
For these it is helpful to be in lots of snow and near evergreen trees. It will keep the wind of you and keep you warmer.
Tree Pit Snow Shelter
Fast to build and doesn’t take a lot of equipment. Gives shade and blocks the wind.
Poncho Lean -to
More stable then the lean-to shelter. Good for shade, out of bad weather and keep wind out you.
A Frame Style Shelter
For warmth and ease of construction, this shelter is one of the best. When shelter is essential to survival, build this shelter.
Debris Hut
This shelter protects you from the sun, wind, rain, and heat. It is easy to make using natural materials.
