100 Ideas that Changed Graphic DesignSteven Heller and Véronique Vienne

New in the “100 Ideas that Changed...” series, this book demonstrates how ideas influenced and defined graphic design, and how those ideas have manifested themselves in objects of design. The 100 entries, arranged broadly in chronological order, range from technical (overprinting, rub-on designs, split fountain); to stylistic (swashes on caps, loud typography, and white space); to objects (dust jackets, design handbooks); and methods (paper cut-outs, pixelation).

Steven Heller is the co-chair of the MFA Designer as Author program and co-founder of the MFA in Design Criticism program at SVA, New York. For 33 years he was an art director at the New York Times. He is editor of AIGA VOICE and contributing editor to Print, Eye, Baseline and I.D. magazines. He is the author of more than 120 books on design and popular culture. He is the recipient of the 1999 AIGA Medal for Lifetime Achievement. Véronique Vienne has worked at a number of US magazines as art director, and is the author of The Art of Doing Nothing and The Art of Imperfection. A frequent contributor to Graphis and Metropolis magazines, she lives in Paris.

Pattern MagicStretch FabricsTomoko Nakamichi

Translated into English for the first time, this is the third in the series of cult Japanese patternmaking books. This new volume looks at working with stretch and jersey fabric. Material that stretches lengthways or sideways can be magical in itself. This book takes the special qualities of jersey and stretch fabrics and uses them to create stunning, sculptural designs. In two parts, the book shows how to work with stretch fabrics and how to cut patterns that exploit their properties with truly original results. The book is accompanied by a basic paper pattern sloper.

After serving many years as a professor at Bunka Fashion College, Tomoko Nakamichi currently delivers lectures and holds courses on pattern making, both in her native Japan and internationally. This book brings together the results of the research on garment patterns she has carried out to help instruct her students.

Color Forecasting for FashionKate Scully and Debra Johnston Cobb

Color is a powerful selling tool. It is the first thing to catch the consumer’s eye in the shop window. Get the color choice wrong and an entire line can stay on the racks. So, how do colors arrive on the runway or the sales floor and why do different companies all seem to choose similar colors each season? The answer lies in the behind-the-scenes work of the huge color- forecasting industry. Color Forecasting for Fashion breaks down the forecasting process—from how to put together a color palette to color theory, and the way that colors behave—and helps readers to build the combination of research and intuitive skills that a successful designer or forecaster needs.

Kate Scully is a color forecasting consultant and Senior Lecturer in Fashion Promotion at the University of the Creative Arts at Rochester. She has worked as the color and fabric editor of several forecast publications.Debra Cobb has researched trends and developed products for fiber, fabric, and apparel manufacturers in the US, including Guilford Mills, Ge-Ray Fabrics, Unifi Inc., and Hanesbrands. She is a regular contributor to textile trade journals on both sides of the Atlantic.

Fashion & SustainabilityDesign for ChangeKate Fletcher and Lynda GroseForeword by Paul Hawken

This book examines how sustainability has the potential to transform both the fashion system and the innovators who work within it. The book is organized in three parts. The first part is concerned with transforming fashion products across the garment’s lifecycle and includes innovation in materials, manufacture, distribution, use, and re-use. The second part looks at ideas that are transforming the fashion system at root into something more sustainable, including new business models that reduce material output. The third section is concerned with transforming the role of fashion designers and looks to examples where the designer changes from a stylist or shaper of things into a communicator, activist or facilitator.

Kate Fletcher is Reader in Sustainable Fashion at London College of Fashion. She is also director of design for sustainable fashion consultancy, Slow Fashion. Her work in business, education, policy, and research has been at the forefront of sustainability ideas and research practice for the past 15 yearsLynda Grose is a professor at California College of the Arts. As a practising designer, consultant, and educator, she cofounded ESPRIT’s ecollection line, which was the first ecologically responsible clothing line developed by a major corporation. Lynda also advises clients including Patagonia, Gap, and the Sustainable Cotton Project.

This Means This, This Means That Second Edition

A User’s Guide to SemioticsSean Hall

Semiotics is the theory of signs, and reading signs is a part of everyday life: from road signs that point to a destination, to smoke that warns of fire, to the symbols buried within art and literature. Semiotic theory can, however, seem mysterious and impenetrable. This introductory book decodes that mystery using visual examples instead of abstract theory. Read straight through or dipped into regularly, this book provides practical examples of how meaning is made in contemporary culture.

Sean Hall is Deputy Head of Department and Leader in Contextual Studies in the Department of Design at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He was formerly a lecturer in Philosophy at Balliol College, Oxford. As a practicing artist, he has exhibited at the V&A, the Royal Academy, and the Whitechapel Gallery.

Skateboard Stickers Mini Edition

Steve Cardwell and Mark Munson

This is the first book to celebrate the use of stickers in skateboarding. Showing the full spectrum of skate sticker art, it brings together over 350 of the most memorable stickers ever produced. Stickers became extremely important in the late 1980s and early 1990s when many smaller, skater-owned companies emerged—they are an easy way to get brands noticed and virtually every board graphic is also available in sticker form. Nearly every skater has a sticker collection of some sort, either on a bedroom door, on the fridge or in a shoe box. From Wes Humpston and Dogtown’s stickers in the 1970s to Birdo at Consolidated’s “Don’t Do It” campaign, Skateboard Stickers features the very best designs, selected by pro skateboarders past and present. It includes sticker-related stories and articles from skaters and artists, such as the story of Death skateboards or Jim Phillips’ legendary Screaming Hand sticker logo for Speed Wheels Santa Cruz, and features quotes from skateboarders describing what stickers mean to them. Contributors include Wes Humpston, Bucky Lasek, Sean Goff, Steve Alba, Andy Howell, Mark McKee, Jim Phillips, and Mike Vallely.

Steve Cardwell runs his own design company Fifteenten Design producing work for print and screen. Focusing on the skateboard snowboard and music industries his work includes corporate identity board graphics posters record sleeves advertising and websites. Mark Munson is an accomplished skater snowboarder and cinematographer. He has been skateboarding for over 14 years and currently works for Airwalk Genetic Shoes as skateboarding team manager and PR for the UK.

The End of Print Second Edition

The Grafik Design of David CarsonLewis Blackwell and David Carson

The End of Print is the definitive statement of the work of the great iconoclastic designer, David Carson. In print for the first time in several years, this classic book has itself become part of the history of graphic design. It features work from the magazines where Carson first made his mark—including Transworld Skateboarding, Surfer, Beach Culture and Ray Gun—as well as his instantly recognizable advertisements for clients such as Nike, Pepsi, MTV, and Sony. Lewis Blackwell’s text includes an interview in which Carson examines the origins of his approach and discusses the extreme reactions to his work.

This is the first book to focus on his interiors, where he consciously developed that style in its heyday and beyond. This book will appeal to all those interested in contemporary architecture and interior design. It serves as a unique and invaluable document of the Postmodern era and supports Farrell’s argument for the continuing legacy of Postmodernist architecture.
