DIVERSE CULTURE Over the past 100 years, more than 13 million immigrants have come to Canada to start a new life. This makes Canada one of the world’s most ethnically diverse countries. Canada’s cultural mosaic is evident in the variety of restaurants and grocery stores, religious places of worship and festivals throughout the year.

Our Waterloo campus is located in the thriving, culturally diverse community of Kitchener-Waterloo (K-W). Located just 100 kilometres west of Toronto, this city offers plenty of hiking trails, golf courses, skating rinks, soccer fields and even a ski hill. Home to many leaders in technology including BlackBerry™, Desire2Learn and Google’s Canadian headquarters, K-W caters to a student population, which represents about a third of our 350,000 people. K-W is small enough to be safe and easy to get around, yet big enough to provide great restaurants, shopping and entertainment.

MEAL PLANS AND DINING OPTIONS

Meal plans are required for all residence students at the Waterloo campus. Students living off-campus in Waterloo may also purchase a meal plan. These plans allow students to purchase food from a number of on- and off-campus locations including The Fresh Food Company (Dining Hall), Pizza Pizza, Starbucks, and Wilf’s (our on-campus pub). A wide range of menu choices including vegetarian, vegan and Asian cuisine are offered and we are able to accommodate special diets such as halal and most food allergies and restrictions.

Meal plans are required for residence students at the Brantford campus at a cost of $400 per term (fall & winter). Even though all of the residences are apartment-style, which means you’ll have a kitchen in the apartment to cook all of your meals, the meal plan will come in handy for buying groceries at FreshCo, a local grocery store, just a short five minute walk from campus. You can also use your meal plan at Williams Fresh Cafe, Subway and Golden Grounds, just to name a few locations.

JOIN A CLUB

There are more than 175 clubs and associations across our Waterloo and Brantford

campuses, bringing like-minded people together to share their passion for anything

from arts and business, to religion and culture. The best part is — you can also create

your own club! All you need is nine other students who share the same passion as you.

VOLUNTEERING – FOR COURSE CREDIT!

Supplement your learning by volunteering with local community organizations related

to your field of study — and get course credit for it! Our students value helping others

— in the 2012 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), 70% of Laurier’s senior

students reported participating in community service or volunteer work, which is a

great way to build your resumé with amazing experiences.

EXPLORE ONTARIO

The Laurier International office offers you opportunities to travel across Ontario to

Niagara Falls and amusement parks like Canada’s Wonderland, as well as participate in

camping trips with friends and classmates.Choosing Wilfrid Laurier University was the best decision I’ve made. I was blown away by how welcoming everyone was. There was so much life and energy all over the campus; it was so contagious that I was immediately captured by it! During our clubs fair, it felt like I signed up for half of all the clubs there!

DOUBLE DEGREES

Co-op gave me the opportunity to get an all-around university student experience: excel academically, be involved in the Laurier community, and have work experience to complement my degree. I’ve always known I was interested in the field of Marketing but I never really had an opportunity to work in the field. Co-op gives you the chance to work in different areas so that you can figure out what you may, or may not like. In my first co-op term, I’m working in a small start-up company called ChangeIt. Working for a start-up has allowed me to get an experience in marketing but it has also exposed me to different sectors of the business, such as charity engagement and customer support.

The Co-op AdvantageCo-op is a paid work placement opportunity that provides you with the chance to develop

valuable contacts, gain self-confidence and create opportunities for employment after

graduation. Honours students in arts, science, economics* and business at the Waterloo

campus may apply to our co-op program. Students in double degree programs who meet

progression requirements for the second year of their program are automatically eligible to

enrol in co-op, as are students in the Bachelor of Business Technology Management (BBTM)

program at the Brantford campus. Students in double degree programs offered between

Laurier and the University of Waterloo are required to participate in co-op.*Co-op is not available in the Applied Economics program.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

• You apply to co-op at the end of first-year. If your program offers automatic admission to co-op and you have met the progression requirements for second-year, you would enrol at this time as well.

• If you meet the grade requirements, you will be invited to an admission interview. Soon thereafter, you will find out if you are accepted into the co-op program.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

The Department of Co-operative Education posts jobs and arranges interviews for you. Staff members will also help you fine-tune your resumé and cover letter and practice interview skills.

Our students have found rewarding positions with companies such as: PepsiCo Beverages Canada, SC Johnson, BlackBerry™, Ernst & Young, Desire2Learn, Microsoft Canada, KPMG, Mastercard, Unilever Canada, General Motors Canada, and IBM.

I wanted to be a part of Laurier because the university not only has a very good academic reputation, but students are also given an incredible number of opportunities to be an active part of a thriving and diverse student society. After being on campus for a few days and seeing how passionate everyone was with community involvement, I also wanted to participate. I co-founded and still help in facilitating The Laurier Studio Experience (LSE), where we help young artists record and promote their music.

The English Proficiency Requirements are for undergraduate programs only. Our Graduate Studies programs have separate requirements.

Exemptions may be granted to applicants who have studied successfully in an English-instructional education system, on a full-time basis for a minimum of three years, exclusive of ESL courses, and who can and who can present acceptable grades in English and other Humanities/Social Science courses from their senior high school year.

The Laurier Institution code is 0893 if required by testing centres.

Note: Students entering the double degree programs with the University of Waterloo must meet UW’s English proficiency requirements.

Before coming to Laurier’s Waterloo campus, I spent six months studying in the LEAF (ESL) Program at the Brantford campus. Personally, I believe the short period of English training also better prepared me for my university experience by improving my academic abilities.

The LAURIER ENGLISH AND ACADEMIC FOUNDATION (LEAF) PROGRAM

allows academically qualified students who do not meet our English proficiency

requirements the opportunity to receive a conditional offer of admission pending

completion of the 5-level program. This means that no TOEFL or IELTS scores are required.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

In each calendar year there are two 14-week regular cycles and two 8-week intensive summer cycles. The regular cycles are longer because they’re aligned with the undergraduate terms, giving you the opportunity to interact with both domestic and international students during the busiest times of the year.

WHAT LEVEL WILL I START IN?

Upon arrival, you will be given a placement test to determine which of the five levels is best suited for you. Our courses focus on academic English and they are designed to prepare students for success in university.

WILL I GET A CONDITIONAL OFFER OF ADMISSION?

Conditional Offers of Admissions will be awarded for September 2015 entry to academically qualified students who are enrolled in, and plan to complete an English Language Certificate Program. This means that a Conditional Offer of Admission to Laurier can be awarded at the same time as an Offer of Admission is made to LEAF or a Laurier-affiliated English language program.

This is appealing if you want the certainty of receiving a letter of acceptance before you leave home, which will cover the English language training and the subsequent time spent at Laurier. Conditions will be removed upon completion of the English language program at the level and grade specified and submission of final official transcripts.

For starting points and tuition fees, please visit chooselaurier.ca/leaf.
