Session A 10–10:45 a.m.Energy Research: Options for Our Energy Future The continued growth of national and global demand for energy motivates research on a variety of energy options . How do they relate to concerns such as energy independence, climate, the environment and cost? What progress has been made toward short- and long-term solutions? What are the prospects for applying fusion, the process that powers the sun and the stars, to the generation of power on earth? These are complicated and intertwined questions . We all have a stake in the answers .

Don’t Fret the Frets Using a workshop approach and multi-level, positive and success based system, this class will demonstrate how to use various strum and finger picking patterns to learn to play the guitar . Bev has taught Beginning Guitar at UW–Milwaukee since 1976 and has taught more than 18,000 students . She was instrumental in forming a Wisconsin chapter of Guitars For Vets, an organization designed to help military veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, based the healing power of music .

Garden Talk, Garden Walk*SLUG, the Sustainable Lawrence University Gardens at the base of Union Hill, is a case study in sustainable agriculture and the role of backyard gardening in developing a land ethic . Learn about this “groundbreaking” project, then tour the garden .

Session B 11–11:45 a.m.The Psychology of Mindfulness Meditation Mindfulness meditation (i .e ., paying attention, on purpose and without judgment) is an emerging area of treatment for a variety of psychological problems . Its roots are in Eastern philosophy, and it is now being widely applied in conjunction with more traditional Western approaches . In this class, participants will explore the practice of mindfulness meditation and the research on its effectiveness for mental health . Be preparedforsomeexperientiallearning!

Olympia and the Olympic Games: 776 B.C.–A.D. 2013 The ancient Olympic Games began in 776 B .C . and continued without interruption for over a millennium, whereas our modern games began in 1896 but have been cancelled three times due to world wars . Perhaps we can still learn something from the ancient Greeks . This illustrated lecture will describe the ancient games with humor and insight .

Freshman Studies: Borges and IThe short fiction of Jorge Luis Borges has been an important part of the Freshman Studies curriculum since 2006 . Session D 2:15–3 p.m.Interactive Balinese GamelanThis is a hands-on workshop in Balinese gamelan music . Gamelan is a traditional percussion-based music from the Indonesian islands of Bali and Java . This workshop will offer participants an opportunity to learn the basic playing techniques of one of Southeast Asia’s great ensemble music traditions . No musical experience necessary .

Religion, Magic and WitchcraftFew people realize that witch-hunting in Europe was an early modern event rather than a medieval one . Though the intellectual foundations for the trials were laid down earlier, the vast majority of them took place between 1580 and 1640 . This mini-course will take quick looks at typical magical practices, the relationship between heresy and magic, state formation, gender roles, and the dynamics and demise of witch-hunting .

Frequently Asked QuestionsWhere do I go when I arrive on campus?
All Reunion guests are asked to check in at Reunion Headquarters located in the Warch Campus Center when they arrive . This includes guests who have campus housing reservations .
What are the check-in hours?Reunion Headquarters will be open during the following times:
Wednesday, June 12 4–8 p .m . Friday, June 14 7 a .m .–9 p .m .Thursday, June 13 7 a .m .–9 p .m . Saturday, June 15 7 a .m .–9 p .m .
•General campus housing will be available after 2 p .m . on Thursday, June 13 .•Lawrence 50-Year Connection campus housing will be available after 4 p .m . on Wednesday, June 12 .
If you arrive outside of the operational hours for Reunion Headquarters, please check in at the residence hall assigned to your class (see page 8) . Student staff will be available around the clock to assist you in the residence halls .
When is checkout?All guests staying on campus are asked to checkout prior to 11 a .m . on Sunday, June 16 .
What is the registration deadline?May 31, 2013 We make every attempt to accommodate walk-ins, but cannot guarantee availability of meals and housing . Report to Reunion Headquarters in the Warch Campus Center to register . Due to limited space, we are not able to accept walk-in registration for the day trip to Björklunden . Registrations received after May 31 will be treated as walk-ins and will be subject to availability .

Can I bring my children?All ages are welcome for Reunion . While no separate family programming is offered, the entire weekend is family friendly . Alumni College and Friday and Saturday evening childcare is available . Please contact the Office of Alumni and Constituency Engagement at 800-283-8320, ext . 6853 .
What should I wear?While there is no dress code for Reunion, the following attire is recommended:•On Friday evening, business casual is the recommended attire .•On Saturday evening, sport coats for men and dresses or pant suits for women are encouraged for the class photos, social hours and dinners .•Sport coats for men and dresses or pant suits for women are recommended for all dinners with the President .•The Buchanan Kiewit Wellness Center will be available throughout the weekend, so don’t forget to pack your swimsuit or workout clothes .
