As the Principal of The Henry Lawson High School, I am committed to –• Consulting, sharing, listening and influencing our

plan moving forward• Targeting available financial, physical, human

and technological resources to achieve quality student learning outcomes.

• Promoting a collegial and co-operative culture to support team effectiveness and to encourage individual development.

• Clarifying the duties of school staff and ensuring staff appropriately exercise their delegated responsibilities.

• Building strong relationships and partnerships with the Grenfell community.

I am excited to find out more about our students, so that I can best support my colleagues and families to make our students school journey a happy and rewarding one.A big thankyou and acknowledgment to Mr Ian Pattingale for relieving as Principal prior to my appointment. It is very much appreciated by myself, the staff and students. I would like to finish this report by thanking my colleagues and the students of The Henry Lawson High School for welcoming me so warmly and supporting my transition into the school. I look forward to meeting and working with the broader community in the days and weeks ahead. Thanks youAaron FlaggPrincipal

Principal’s reportIt is a privilege and honour to be appointed as the Principal of The Henry Lawson High School. I am looking forward to the coming weeks, months and years. I spent the first eighteen years of my life growing up on my family’s dry land wheat and sheep property at Moombooldool near Barellan. For the next five years, I studied Agriculture, Science and Education at Western Sydney University (Hawkesbury). I started my teaching career in 1999 as the Agriculture Coordinator in Biloela (Central Queensland), then I moved to Griffith, NSW as the Science/Agriculture teacher. I started as the Head Teacher of Science in 2006, before relieving as the Deputy Principal in 2013 and 2014. I have been the Principal of Balranald Central School from Term 4, 2014 to 2018.My wife Hope is an English/History teacher at Young High School and we have 5 year old twins, Lucille and Theodore.I have always enjoyed team sports, playing AFL in Barellan as a child, five years of Rugby union for Western Sydney (Hawkesbury) and eight years of Rugby league for Biloela and Barellan. I accepted many years ago that those days were behind me. I have more recently attempted and enjoyed playing social golf and lawn bowls.I enjoy travelling and spending time with family and friends. We have spent time in Europe and India and many destinations around Australia. I have a large family of six brothers and two sisters and the current niece and nephew count is 22!

Welcome to our new staff members for 2019. Miss Mea O’Byrne is joining our administration team as our School Based Trainee. Miss Annika Whale joined us in Term 4 2018 as our Agriculture teacher. Mrs Margaret Murney is a familiar face having relieved in the library previously, and returns as our Teacher Librarian while Ms Lynch is on leave. Leading our school is Mr Aaron Flagg who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as our Principal.

Calculators in Mathematics ClassesParents are asked to please ensure that their student has a calculator and that they bring it to all mathematics classes. When students do not have calculators, development of other skills, beyond simple calculations is limited, spending extra time on simple calculations and not focusing on the new skills being taught.

Calculators are available for purchase at the school office at a cost of $22.00 and are considerably cheaper than those purchased elsewhere. Students also benefit from having the same calculator as their classmates, making social learning easier.

Thank you Andrew JonesHead Teacher (Mathematics)

Spelling is important because autocorrect is not always write.

To raise awareness of the importance of spelling and to encourage our students to become more active in improving their spelling, we will be running a spelling competition for all students in Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) during this term.

ROUND ONE WILL BE HELD WEDNESDAY 13 FEBRUARY 2019.

Round 1 word lists have been designed with a range of words, across all key learning areas, to suit a range of spelling abilities. In this way we are hoping that all students will achieve some level of success and encourage all students to have a go.

We encourage parents and students to work together in preparation for the spelling bee. There are two initial rounds, which will lead to the Spelling Bee Championships later in the term. This is designed to be a fun and inclusive activity with merits and prizes for students who challenge, encourage and achieve.

A variety of approaches can be quite effective, from look/cover/write, to word jumbles and games. Please encourage regular practice for students to be best prepared.

The boys both swam exceptionally well under what can only be described as “stinking hot conditions”! Tom placed first in the men’s 15 years and over 50m freestyle and butterfly, 100m freestyle and butterfly, 200m freestyle, second in the 50m breaststroke and third in the 100m breaststroke. Tom also achieved five PBs including a huge 6.38 seconds off his 100m breaststroke. Harry had a fantastic day. After achieving five PB’s at the Bathurst carnival, including almost 90 seconds off his 200m breaststroke, he backed up with another five PBs. Great swimming Tom and Harry. Special guest and Australian Dolphin team member Kurt Herzog threw his hat in the ring and took part in an invitational handicapped 50m freestyle race. It was a huge honour for Tom to be invited along with eight other swimmers to participate in the special event. Tom was second last to start with only a one second head start over Kurt and just managed to pip him at the post to place 4th, only a tenth of a second front of Kurt. Kurt was very gracious with his time, relaying his own stories, signing autographs and endless photos! He is a fantastic ambassador for Swimming Australia. It was a great thrill for all the swimmers involved and one that they will certainly remember.TIME KEEPING ROSTERTimekeepers for this week Friday 1 February 2019 – Freebody, Gibson, Griffin (Cobie), Heathcote, Hucker, Griffin (Delilah) and Hughes (Penny)Please arrive at the pool between 5.30 pm and 5.45 pm so we can run you through the Dolphin timing system.
