LAWSON’S LATEST 15 FEBRUARY 2019 TERM 1 ISSUE 3 THE HENRY LAWSON HIGH SCHOOL CHALLENGE, ENCOURAGE, ACHIEVE 49 SOUTH STREET, GRENFELL NSW 2810 02 6343 1390 www.henrylawso-h.schools.nsw.edu.au ANNA’S ON THE HUNT! Congratulations Anna Hunt on your selection in the 2019 Westfield Junior Matildas team! Anna will go into camp at the Gold Coast with the rest of the team before travelling to Laos next week for the 2019 AFC Under 16 Women’s Championship Qualifications. Australia will require a top two finish in their pool to advance to the 2019 AFC Under 16 Women’s Championship in September. Anna is the third talented Grenfell footballer to be named in the Junior Matildas squad in the last ten years, following in the footsteps of sister Clare and Sammie Wood. The Henry Lawson High School staff, students and community wish Anna and the Junior Matildas team all the best in the competition and we look forward to hearing your results. WEST OF THE DIVIDE After a nearly twenty-hour flight, the West of The Divide ensemble landed in Rome on 16 January. From the beginning, our days were full of adventure. Starting with a visit to the famous Colosseum and Forum, experiencing incredible feats of the ancient worlds. Our first performance was at an Australian embassy, which was very successful, giving us the confidence for the rest of the tour. Unfortunately, after visiting the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and more, it was time for us to move on. Passing through San Gimignano, and tasting delicious gelato, we arrived in Florence. While the band was having a fairly restful day, allowing us to take in the beauty of this amazing city, the choir attended a masterclass, which I’m sure was fun too. Saying our goodbyes to David, Michelangelo’s amazing statue, we packed the bus again and moved on to Venice. It was clear to everyone that we were dropping to a new level of cold, as we were being hit with the cold breezes from the water. However, this didn’t stop us from taking in the uniqueness of the city. Following an incredible glass blowing workshop, we performed in Saint Marco Basilica with an out of tune keyboard, making the performance a challenge if nothing else. Pulling ourselves away from the wonders of Italy, we travelled to the plummeting degrees of Slovenia, with our first sight of snow. Our performance in the Postojna Caves was something out of this world, with a delay of six seconds the songs sounded incredible. Lake Bled was breathtaking. We drifted effortlessly to the only island on the traditional Plenta boats, before climbing the stairs, drinking gloriously warm and rich hot chocolate, and ruthlessly pelting each other with snowballs. Dragging ourselves from the luxury of our Slovenian accommodation, we arrived in Croatia. Here we sang the Croatian National Anthem for a major morning television program and experienced Zagreb on a walking tour. All of the ensemble took part in a Klapa vocal workshop. Their entrancing talent convinced even the most percussive players to want to sing along. Our final hurrah was the performance for Australia Day at the Lisinski Hall, followed by a formal reception at the Australian Embassy. I would like to thank Mr McKnight for accompanying us ... and for making sure I didn’t die. Connor Day

  • Our school is participating in a fully funded program called Links to Learning. The program aims to provide targeted students with various learning opportunities that will improve their education, employment and life skills. It will run every week, working towards every student becoming the best people they can be; for themselves, their community and in their future career. Program facilitator Mr Luke Pitrowicz will be working with Ms Jennifer Bell.

Year 7 students across NSW are currently participating in Best Start testing. Best Start will assist in identifying students who may require additional support in the development of key literacy and numeracy skills that are fundamental to their success in all subjects in secondary school. Feedback from the assessment will provide secondary teachers with information to support targeted teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of students. We will use the Best Start Year 7 online assessment to supplement and support existing Year 6 -7 transition practices. The school swimming carnival will be held on Friday 15 February. All parents and community members are welcome to attend the carnival and support our students. All the best to our competitors and thank you to the volunteers who make the carnival possible.Have a great week!Aaron FlaggPrincipal

Principal’s reportCongratulations to Anna Hunt in Year 10 on her selection for the Australian Junior Matilda’s Soccer team. This is an extremely high-level sporting achievement. Well done Anna! The teachers and students of THLHS are very proud. We wish you all the best and support you in your upcoming commitments.I would like to introduce Carolynne Merchant who is the Director Educational Leadership for the Temora Principal Network. Carolynne is looking forward to working in partnership with The Henry Lawson High School, and is passionate about ensuring every student is known, valued and cared for, in our schools.

Another new face in our school is Ms Katie Cheney who has been appointed as our school psychologist. Katie will be available every Monday to meet and talk with our students. Katie has experience working as a mental health worker and as a psychologist in a private practice. Welcome to The Henry Lawson High School Katie.

Many of our Year 11 students are attending their first TAFE/TVET lesson this week. Our students have enrolled in courses such as Automotive, Early Childhood, Animal Studies, Shearing and Wool Handling, and Beauty Services. These courses extend the already high quality curriculum at The Henry Lawson High School. Good luck to Year 11 and enjoy the learning process.

  • CASUAL RELIEF POSITION

The Henry Lawson High School is seeking to establish a pool of suitable applicants to provide casual relief in the school office.

The position is responsible to the Principal for assisting in a range of office activities, including record keeping, book keeping and other clerical duties, reception and operating and maintaining office equipment.

Please contact the principal, Mr Aaron Flagg, on 63431390 for further information.

Please note: It is a requirement of the Department of Education that employees obtain a Working With Children Check number from the Office of the Children’s Guardian. The application for the Working With Children Check costs $80.00.

Year 7 students completed their Best Start testing this week. The online testing was completed over two periods, focusing on literacy and numeracy. The feedback the school receives will assist teachers in identifying and addressing individual learning needs of our students and support their transition to high school.

VaccinationsAttention Years 7 and 10: 2019 NSW School Vaccination Program

Each year NSW Health works with schools to offer vaccines recommended for adolescents by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

In 2019, the following vaccines will be offered to all Year 7 students:

    • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in a 2-dose schedule at 0, and 6 months.

    • Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (whooping cough) - vaccine (dTpa) as a single dose.

For Year 7, the first scheduled vaccination will take place on the morning of Thursday 21 March, the second will occur later in the year.In addition, the NSW Government will fund a school-based meningococcal vaccination program for all Year 10 students, due to take place on Thursday 21 May.

Please mark these dates on your calendar.

Year 7 and 10 parent information kits were distributed this week. Please read, sign and return consent forms to the school office as soon as possible.

  • Calculators in Mathematics ClassesParents are asked to please ensure that their student has a calculator and that they bring it to all mathematics classes. When students do not have calculators, development of other skills, beyond simple calculations is limited, spending extra time on simple calculations and not focusing on the new skills being taught.

Calculators are available for purchase at the school office at a cost of $22.00 and are considerably cheaper than those purchased elsewhere. Students also benefit from having the same calculator as their classmates, making social learning easier.

Thank you Andrew JonesHead Teacher (Mathematics)
