There is a sense of purpose with realistic short term goals. Year 11 will be inducted into the year at an information session to be held on Thursday 13 October starting from 9.00am where they will receive their assessment schedule and other relevant information. And so the cycle goes on.

A group of Year 8 students took part in an exciting video conference during the week that looked at STEAM. This is a project that focuses on the combined knowledge and skills in science, technology, engineering, art and maths. The project will be based on computer gaming but more information and interactions are planned for early next term. Watch this space.

Thimble is being transformed. A group of artists are using all their spare time to complete this year’s Archibull presentation, named for the golden thimbles that are on the end of her horns. It is another masterpiece, again using the concept of a game, this time Monopoly, to look at the cotton industry. The end date is 20 October so all the threads are being drawn together!

There will be changes on staff next term. Mr Rodney has left, his legacy no doubt his great love of history that he instilled in so many students. We wish him well. Miss Sarah Higgs will be taking up the English/history position till the end of the year. Mr Causer is finishing up in his temporary position, having taught students across a range of learning areas; fortunately he will be back as a day to day casual. Thank you to all the parents and community members who have supported our students in so many ways in the last 10 weeks; it has been another term of great, inclusive learning.

We all, students and staff, start back on Monday 19 October for more engaging learning activities. Enjoy the break.

Margaret Carey

Principal

Another term is over and another group of young adults graduate from school.

Tuesday night’s social saw a range of memorable Disney characters turn up, accompanied by Walt Disney (Year Adviser Mr Harris) who introduced each character, telling of their dreams. They all looked terrific, especially Walt, adding colour and entertainment to a very happy night. Year 12 let us know that it was their last school day: we had a beautiful breakfast of egg and bacon rolls, we were charged to park cars and had to negotiate obstacles to get into the ground and that wasn’t counting the magpies that had the good sense to stay in the trees. Throughout their assembly, the different activities raised more money so that at their graduation assembly on Thursday they were able to present to the school a gift of a welcoming mat for the front foyer, a cheque of $500 to their nominated charity Beyond Blue and reinvest in the Year 12 room with a new vacuum cleaner. Year 12 are looking forward to their farewell dinner on Friday night which parents, students, teachers and admin and support staff have been working towards all term. It will be a wonderful celebration within our school community of this significant life occasion: completing secondary education and leaving school. The Higher School Certificate exams start Thursday 13 October, so once the celebrations are over Year 12 will need to refocus on the main game; being prepared to demonstrate their skills and understandings to the best of their ability. We wish them all well with their new and anticipated pathways.

Year 11 are in the process of change. Over the last fortnight, they have all had the chance to talk about and discuss their learning and their goals in preparation for the start of their HSC course next term. The P&C would like to wish Year 12 2016 all the best for their HSC examinations and futures. May your dreams come true.We would also like to acknowledge and thank their parents, caregivers and families for the support they have shown over the past six years of their child’s school life at The Henry Lawson High School.

Year 9 girls dayOur girls enjoyed a special and full day last week, beginning with a session called “Inspiring Women” which included Councillor Carly Brown, local businesswoman Trudie O’Byrne and teacher Sarah Higgs. Each spoke of their journeys and the obstacles they had to overcome to achieve their life goals. The message from all three was clear: work hard, learn from your mistakes, be true to yourselves!

Kat Brenner visited to give tips on skin care and make-up; social worker Carrie Cox gave an excellent presentation called “Powerful Me”, and colleague Elly Schiller a session on healthy communication.

The day ended with exercise and fun, and a little more knowledge about fitness and balance, when we learned about belly dancing from Jaime Elms.

Our thanks to all contributors to the day.

“The world produces enough food to feed everyone. Yet, one in nine people on our planet go to bed hungry each night.“

Year 7 & 8 geography recently considered the above statement. The two classes were combined to complete a task on food inequality. The students picked a random ticket from a box to decided which group they would be in.Group one (high income earners) sat down to a meal of pasta and salad with apple juiceGroup two (middle income earners) gathered together for some ham and cheese sandwiches and a jug of water.Whilst the remainder of students formed group three (the low income earners), and were spoilt with a delicious meal of boiled rice and water from a bowl.Students soon realised the inequalities that occur around the world when it comes to food, realising how lucky they are to live in a country where this is not an issue.

Well-being Corner“Where there is life there is hope. Where there are

hopes there are dreams.”

Denis Waitley

When you dream about your future, dream as vividly as you can. If you have an idea about what it is you’d like to do, find out what it takes to do it, to get there – learn

as much as you can. Now your dream is a goal.

TODAYI’ll start turning a dream into a goal.
