State is 2nd in number of hate groups Florida is home to 43 extremist groups, Alabama tracking center says. By JIM STRATTON SENTINEL STAFF WRITER

The meeting, shrouded in the piney woods of east Orange County, started with a round of jokes attacking minorities. A recording of the meeting shows that speeches came next - searing diatribes about the white man's plight. It's the Jews, the attendees barked, and the blacks. And don't for- get the Hispanics. As the anger peaked, a flaming wooden swastika scorched the darkness. "Let's take these [expletive] and get 'em out of our [expletive] land," one man is heard saying in the recording. "Welcome to the Fourth Reich!" And welcome to extremism in Florida. The state famous for tourism and endless sunshine has a disturbing side. It is home to 43 so-called hate groups, second only to South Carolina, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a Montgomery, Ala., organization that has tracked such groups for 25 years. Since 1997, the state has finished first or second six times in the center's annual reports on extremist groups. The center, the Anti-Defamation League and an FBI investigator who has monitored Florida extremist groups attribute the state's prominence on the hate-group list to its booming

Investigators ID suspects in '51 killings A bombing on Christmas took the lives of a Florida civil-rights pioneer and his wife. By LAURIN SELLERS SENTINEL STAFF WRITER

MIMS -- Four suspects have been identified in the bombing deaths of civil-rights leader Harry T. Moore and his wife more than half a century ago, a state investigator said Friday, and the names of the Ku Klux Klan members should be released within the next few months. Officials would not say whether any of the men are still alive but said all four were so violent they were kicked out of the KKK in Georgia before joining a Florida branch. Moore and his wife, Harriette, died after a bomb exploded under their home in the north Brevard County community of Mims on Christmas night 1951. Their murders remain one of the biggest unsolved mysteries of the early civil-rights movement. "They thought Moore was getting out of hand, and they hated him," Frank M. Beisler, senior investigator for the state Attorney General's Office of Civil Rights, said of the suspects. "They planned for about a year to kill him. We think we've got these four guys pegged."

Friday's announcement came during the final phase of the investigation launched last December by Attorney General Charlie Crist, a candidate for governor next year.

Beisler said they got a major break in the case last month when a tipster told investigators about a deathbed confession from one of the four men, who had never been considered a suspect.

The FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement had mentioned the other three men as likely suspects during previous probes, he said. All four are from a tri-county area including Brevard, Lake and Orange, Beisler said.

Officials on Friday also began excavating the site of the bombing in the hope of finding forensic evidence that could further link the men to the crime.

By the afternoon, archaeologists with Thomas Penders & Associates of Titusville had recovered a 2-inch chunk of house tile and other debris. "They're looking for anything that doesn't grow here," Beisler said. But what investigators
