AWHIWHENUA – The AWHI Land Based Training Course

Tēnā koe, tēnā koutou katoa – Introduction Warm greetings - Farming is changing and Māori farm operators are taking up the challenge.

Farm owners are increasing their land holdings, which in turn directly affects their need for

trained labour. In both the sheep, beef and dairy industries, instead of selling their land,

farmers are now retaining their stock and employing farm managers. These ‘professional’

farm managers have good salary packages based on their sound business skills,

communications skills and forward thinking.

Māori land owners that have agricultural operations on their land want to harness these

skills and want their descendants to learn these skills too. AWHIWHENUA is committed to

train young people who will become the new breed of managers that the sheep, beef and

dairy industry needs.

Land Based Training, the Atihau-Whanganui Incorporation (AWHI) and the Te Ati Hau Trust

are privileged to offer this opportunity to you. We are doing this jointly by merging our

collective expertise to provide a unique marae based Māori accredited agricultural

programme linked to a large sheep, beef and dairy enterprise. Developing skills and

knowledge and being recognised for that through a qualification, is an important part of life

today. Being involved in the sheep and beef industry is a positive step in your career

pathway. May you take this opportunity to learn and enjoy.

Course Aim To give students an opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge, which will help put

them in a better position to decide what employment pathways they may choose for their

future in the field of agriculture.

Course Tutors Hikoi Te Riaki – Field Instructor Derek Priest - Tutor

Course Pre-requisites Students will have to show a keen interest in farming as a career choice

Average to above academic achievement and average to above average behaviour

If students wish to enter at Year 12 (Form 6) or above they must have either passed

NCEA Level 1 or may gain entry at the discretion of the course tutor

All students must have NCEA Level 1 Maths (minimum of 8 credits) or equivalent

A selection process is undertaken when applications are received

TRAINING/ FACILITY /STATIONS

Atihau Whanganui Incorporation and Te Ati Hau Trust have made a commitment to support

Land Based Training in delivering a level three NZQA accredited course.

The practical training properties and theory base for this course is to be held in Karioi at

Ngā Mōkai Marae 20km southeast of Ohakune SH4 between Ohakune and

Waiouru.(Whanganui via Fields Track/Whangaehu Valley Road).

The properties involved with the course have different individual challenges. Having three

properties will support the student to identify a standard up held in the Agricultural sector.

Atihau-Whanganui Incorporation, Te Kaahu Estate and Taiwiri Papakainga will support the

growth of this course and do encourage any other farm operation to support by sharing

knowledge, templates, and information to grow quality students.

The AWHIWHENUA Land Based Training Course has access to the Karioi property of Ngā

Mōkai Marae, and facilities to enhance and teach hill country sheep and cattle skills to a

select group of not more than eight (8) trainees per year.

Land Based Training offers the educational backup and teaching to ensure quality tuition is

passed on to the fortunate selected students.

COURSE INFORMATION

Subject to the nature of the course, the LBT Certificate in Agriculture Level 3 will be broken

into two parts.

Theory It is envisaged that there will be up to six three day block courses on the theory component

of the qualification throughout the calendar year.

Derek Priest will tutor these classes.

Practical Practical lessons will be five days per week with a mixture of work experience and group

practical tasks. Farmers who support our Certificate of Agriculture Course students, we feel

have the following qualities:

1. Are prepared to give their time to help others develop, and see them learn and prosper.

2. Have good communication and people skills.

3. Are willing and keen to be involved in a learning environment.

The students will learn skills from the farmers, field instructor, tutor, or any specialist person

involved during the course. We put emphasis on a ‘hands on’ approach, that is, students

learn best by practically applying theoretical skills learnt.

A Dog work component may be taught toward the end of the year.

Transport Students will be picked up and dropped off daily if within the AWHIWHENUA Land Based

Course Assessment The course work is internally assessed to ensure the students are fully conversant with each

topic.

Assessment procedures meet New Zealand Qualifications Standard and are administered by

the Agriculture Industry Training Organisation (AgITO). About Unit Standards To pass a certain skill in this course, students have to meet a set standard. Usually that

standard will be 100% in theory or ‘complete task without supervision’ in practical. Each

unit of work is therefore called a Unit Standard.

The unit standards have a mixture of knowledge and practical skills. Each has a level and a

credit value. Unit standards at higher levels describe advanced skills or complex

understanding. The credit value gives an estimate of the amount of learning time usually

required before the knowledge or skill is achieved. Each qualification requires you to

achieve a certain number of credits.
