Background:
2020 marks 13 years of Safety Day. The objective is to bring all employees and contractors together
to engage and focus on improving our safety culture. It should not be viewed as an isolated event,
but it is a significant opportunity to reflect on our journey to build a stronger safety culture in

think about the steps we can all individually and collectively take to achieve “Goal Zero”.

2020 Safety Day – Leader’s Guide
Your role as a Line Leader: Before the Safety Day, put Wednesday, 19th February in your diary and plan time to
prepare. Use existing meetings and engagement opportunities to set and reinforce
expectations and demonstrate your personal commitment as the Safety Day approaches
(and beyond). Note safety day can be run anytime from 19th Feb for a one month period.
If appropriate for your role, engage with your contractor partners to collaborate on how
to maximize the effectiveness of the Safety Day.
Select event leaders who have the facilitation skills to inspire and engage others.
The leader of a team can take on the role of Safety Day event leader, but he or she can
also opt to nominate someone in the team as event leader as a development opportunity.
Our Safety Day provides a great chance for all to demonstrate effective and visible safety
leadership
On the Safety Day itself, identify key messages for your team and open the engagement
session by providing the local business context for the Safety Day topic. Connect the
engagement to local risks and your activities to manage them, setting your expectations
for the event and beyond.
Consider how the success of your Safety Day engagement session will be measured.
Your role as an Event Leader: Tailor the material to your audience with local examples.
Practice your engagement session so you are at your best; asking for feedback from
others can help!
On the Safety Day, use the ‘MD Message’ and ‘Safety Day’ films as well as your own and
audience’s stories to inspire and encourage employees and contractors to understand
what it takes to achieve ‘Goal Zero’.
Facilitate a team event which enables everyone to convert the learnings from the day into
reality.
The Safety Day session is designed for 90 minutes although you may exceed that time
depending on your group size and discussions.
Following the session, record the agreed actions for the group online from the SAFTEY
DAY PAGE.
Request participants to fill in the online survey, which can be accessed from the
