LEADERSNEWS Our External Review took place this week, and has been a rewarding and affirming process. On Monday over 50 students from year 3-5 were interviewed, followed by school council reps. On Tuesday parent volunteers and many of our teachers spoke with Liz, Ilia and Janice around achievements, challenges, strengths and growth areas for our school. Ilia, the Principal from Virginia Primary likened the process to a treasure hunt. He commented that everything sounded too good to be true, and the more they hunted for areas of improvement the more treasures they found. They noted the strong community and collaborative culture of the school, the high level of expectation and trust, and how we focus on improvement and respond to feedback . Parents and Council commented on the energy and enthusiasm early career teachers have brought to the school, and the depth of leadership shown with programmes building on Maths, STEM and digital technologies. They were particularly impressed with the confident articulation of students regarding their learning, and their ability to express the purpose of their learning, and understanding of challenge and persistence to improve learning. There was strong evidence that students are highly engaged, motivated, challenged and supported in learning strategies and dispositions to persevere. A big thank you to everyone who participated, and rest assured we will build on suggestions for improvement, and welcome feedback from all sources. Recommendations focussed on transferring our deep learning in Maths into Reading processes to ensure our good readers become even better, with more challenge and rigour in class activities, and on our Pupil free day next week we will be sharing strategies across R-7. We are also reviewing our Inquiry units and will work together to ensure they provide quality learning opportunities for all students. It was timely that our NAPLAN results arrived at school during this process, and affirmed our school directions. Our Year 3 results showed improvements in all areas, particularly our Numeracy levels. 80 % of our Year 5 students showed medium to upper growth in Maths, and all our year 7 students showed medium to upper growth in Reading. The writing genre this year was Narrative for year 3 and 5 students, and there was a slight dip in our Year 5 writing result as a result of new learning. All other results showed improvements. Teachers will spend the next week analysing each student’s progress and the package will be sent home to families of Year 3, 5 and 7 students Thursday, week 6. Our school has been selected as a trial school for online NAPLAN testing next year, and we will be conducting a trial next week using our school devices. This week Book week has been celebrated across the school, and the Library has offered fun activities during lunchtimes. On Friday we will hold a Book week assembly and students are invited to dress up in a character from a book of choice. And just to make the day even more exciting, our annual Disco will take place Friday night. What a week!! A reminder Swimming safety and familiarisation lessons for Reception to year 5 students are on next week from Monday to Thursday. Well done to our Athletes who competed at District day Wednesday, and our choir students who are gearing up for their front row performance at the Entertainment centre in 2 weeks. So much to be proud of, including Christie Evans being a finalist in the State STEM Teacher of the Year awards (google YouTube STEM Educator of the Year to see her presentation); and Bernie, Elise and Eva nominated for Teacher Excellence Awards. MEDIC ALERT

PARVOVIRUS B19 (SLAP FACE) We have had a few reports of students having had Slap Face at EPS. This is generally a mild rash that occurs most often in children; about 20% of students infected have no symptoms. Early in the infection period, there may be mild cold-like symptoms, and then generally 2-5 days later the child typically develops a “slapped cheek’ rash on the face and a lacy red rash on the trunk and limbs. Spread of infection is by direct or indirect connection with airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing. Once the rash appears, the person is no longer infectious. Incubation Period: 4-14 days from exposure, though may be up to 20 days. Infectious Period: in most cases, not infectious once the rash appears. Control the spread: there is no vaccine for this infection Wash hands regularly and clean surfaces contaminated by discharge from the nose or throat.

BOOK WEEK AT EPS Book Fair Thank you for your fantastic support during the book fair. We earnt a huge $1800 commission to spend on books for the library.

Book Week Students enjoyed the visit from author Michael Wagner. He kept them laughing throughout the session. The students have also been visiting different places from books each day in the library making wands, mermaids and sharks and learning about India. Please remember that Friday is dress up day. Please come dressed as a book character from your favourite book and join in on the fun.

SWIMMING LESSONS- WEEK 6 A reminder that swimming lessons for Reception to Year 5 classes take place from Monday, 28th August until Thursday, 31st August, at Marion Aquatic Centre. Students will need to have bathers on and medication required in a labelled bag, ready to start their lesson on arrival at the pool. If you haven’t returned money and medical forms can you please do so before Monday 21st August. Numbers on the buses are limited to one helper per class so teachers will request support if needed. Parents can drive themselves to the pool and won’t be charged an entry fee, however younger siblings aren’t encouraged due to supervision issues.
