    Y 2020 IMPACT REPORT

    LEADERSHIPBEYOND THE GAME

Developing leaders who pos i t i ve ly impact our wor ld .

  • What an interesting year! Our leadership team began the year envisioning and dreaming about our 2030 plans for the future. A great deal of progress, clarity

and excitement was beginning to take shape on how to further our vision of using the platform of baseball to develop future leaders. Then the reality of the COVID-19

pandemic began to move to the forefront. In March, we sat down as a leadership team and prepared for what could be one of the toughest years our young nonprofit has faced. I

am proud to share that our team has done an exceptional job at navigating and making the necessary pivots as an organization to exceed all expectations in a pandemic riddled year.

World Baseball Academy was able to utilize our first-class ASH Centre campus and its spacious 26-acres on June 14, 2020, as a safe environment for the re-introduction of youth

baseball. Our staff successfully reduced capacity and hosted a range of camps, tournaments and game play under Governor Holcomb’s “Back on Track Plan” for the state of Indiana. Our

organization opened the new Adaptive Field that was built in partnership with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. The expansion to four fields allowed the organization to set a new record of overall

usages on the ASH Centre campus. An amazing feat during a very challenging time!

The summer season also led to new partnerships. Collaborations with Turnstone and Special Olympics were forged. In addition, the expansion of existing opportunities for students with varying abilities took place in our “At Bat” program with YMCA. A new Junior Leadership Challenge was launched leveraging the powerful platform of sports to help elementary students give back and serve within their community. An emotional “Senior Night Celebration” was hosted by World Baseball Academy to allow area senior baseball and softball players a chance to play one final game with their friends due to the loss of their season.

World Baseball Academy continues to look ahead at new programs gaining momentum. In 2021, WBA Leadership Academy will launch providing area high school students an opportunity to be challenged in their leadership capacity. In continued partnership with the Boys and Girls Club, WBA will be hosting a Badges For Baseball Program that will seek to build relationships between urban youth and police officers. The new WBA Baseball Lab upgrades will allow for an expansion of STEM opportunities. The beautiful new outdoor ballfields at the ASH Centre are being recognized as a true community asset across the Midwest, leading to an increase in tournament registrations and partnerships.

All of this is not possible without the amazing support of our donors and volunteers! World Baseball Academy continues to be grateful to all of our donors, volunteers, board and staff for their commitment to serving our next generation of young leaders. The year of 2020 brought an array of challenges and concerns to our organization. However, our leadership team has utilized WBA core values such as integrity, discipline and perseverance to make 2020 one of the most successful years in our organization’s history.

Please consider standing with us and helping fuel our vision of developing leaders who positively impact our world.

    Thank you,

  • As WBA Board President, I am proud of our organization’s commitment to using the platform of baseball to positively impact the lives of young people and families in our community. Over the past several years, it has been rewarding to watch WBA mature into a true community asset for Northeast Indiana. On a daily basis, I am encouraged to see how much hard work the staff, volunteers and donors put into using the platform of sports as a positive mentoring opportunity for the youth that we serve.

WBA has raised over $5 million in capital campaign support to position the ASH Centre campus into a first class outdoor complex. Our partnership with OPS has allowed the indoor campus to be completely transformed. In 2020, our leadership estimated that nearly 120,000 people frequented the ASH Centre campus and we’re excited about a bright future!

Of course, 2020 had its own challenges. However, our leadership has been able to navigate the COVID-19 crisis with safety and care for the families we serve. As a result of various factors, WBA was able to grow through the pandemic and has increased our fund development for programming in new and innovative ways. The Board of Directors work alongside our CEO and staff to help create a committed team that is privileged to see our vision continue to grow. Developing leaders who positively impact our world is our vision and passion.

Core 30 Program Parent Testimony: The Zwick Family"The WBA and their program have impacted my family in many ways. I thought I was signing up for a baseball skill program but learned that the program offers so much more! The WBA has helped build leaders outside the realm of baseball. My children look forward to the opportunities they are given to give back to others throughout the program.

In addition, the program has given us two very special people in our lives. Tim and Melinda have been valuable assets to all my children's lives by offering them another safe haven to talk to when they were stressed or needed someone to vent to. My boys think of Tim and Melinda as mentors and they would not have that without this program! They truly make the program feel like family by dropping off care packages, checking in when someone is sick or injured, and spending their summer nights (or cold fall mornings) supporting kids in all their activities." -Jillian Zwick

    ACRE CAMPUS

The outdoor campus boasts the highest quality youth baseball complex in Northern Indiana, Northwest Ohio and all of Michigan. Four high-quality fields serve both baseball and softball players, ages eight through college. Three fields have turf infields with natural grass outfields and our newest field is all turf. First class lighting allows for more available field usage hours and better visibility. Portable fencing, portable mounds, and adjustable base paths make our fields perfect for any group's needs!

World Baseball Academy owns and operates the ASH Centre, a 26-acre athletic complex that includes premier indoor and outdoor athletic facilities. The ASH Centre indoor facilities are contained in a 43,285 square foot building that includes: a 16,000 sq ft arena with NFL quality turf, an 8,000 square foot gym with a basketball court renovated to NBA specifications, and a weight room/fitness center, a golf academy, retractable batting tunnels, baseball lab, PT clinic, offices and concessions.

World Baseball Academy owns the facility, and leases a large portion of the indoors to Optimum Performance Sports, a department of The Orthopedic Hospital of Lutheran Health Network. OPS serves athletes of all ages and sports, providing strength, agility and speed training as well as rehabilitation. Physical therapists and sports medicine specialists see patients in private office space. Apex Golf Lab and the Fort Wayne Mad Ants serve as sub-tenants to OPS.

The ASH Centre campus has become a first class community asset with a wide range of activities serving both young people and adults!

  • A NEW FIELDWITH NEW POSSIBILITIESThe completion of WBA's new fourth field, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation Youth Development Field, brought many new opportunities for impact. Not only is it a top quality all turf field, but it was built with adaptive capabilities in mind. This year we partnered with Turnstone Center and the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne on two adaptive baseball camps: the All Abilites one day camp in the summer and the At Bat Adaptive Camp, which spanned five weeks in the fall. The adaptive baseball programs provide individual support while encouraging teamwork and life skills. We were also able to provide practice space to our local Special Olympics softball team.

“The World Baseball Academy has provided incredible experiences for youth with a wide variety of disabilities. The social and physical benefits provided through access to sports like baseball for youth are so critical to healthy development, especially when socialization options can be so limited during the pandemic. We are fortunate to have a partner like WBA who is passionate about our community and willing to come alongside us to empower youth with disabilities, developing future athletes and future leaders.” - Michelle KimpelDirector of Wellness and Adaptive Sports, Turnstone

  • "The YMCA is so grateful for our continued partnership with the World Baseball Academy. The YMCA, Turnstone and World Baseball Academy partnered to host Adaptive Baseball this fall, with a record-breaking number of attendees. Participants learned baseball drills, had opportunities to be part of a team and ran the bases around the adaptive Cal Ripken turf field! The YMCA and Turnstone partnered to host the first ever All Abilities Camp, with the program’s last session at the World Baseball Academy’s outdoor field. The participants had a blast playing baseball together and flying around the bases. Everyone deserves to have opportunities to belong and achieve and the partnership with the World Baseball Academy provides just that! Their incredible and devoted volunteers and staff truly make the participants feel special and included. There’s nothing quite like seeing the smiles on the participant’s faces, reflecting their newfound confidence and celebrating their abilities!"-Rebekah CoffeyDirector of Adaptive Services, YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne

  • ON DECK INITIATIVEWorld Baseball Academy strives to live out its vision daily, by developing leaders who positively impact our world. Our passion for developing young people inspires us to reach all kids, not just those whose families can afford baseball lessons and tournaments, or those who are physically or developmentally capable of mainstream competitive sports. That’s why we created On Deck.

The On Deck initiative is a series of programs focused on serving at-risk youth. They include adult role models as well as leadership & life skills development as a means to accomplish WBA’s vision of developing future leaders.

    PARENT PERSPECTIVE

    -Roosevelt Moore

"They're here to change the narrative of so many different negative things that are out here in the world and even in our communities at times.

It's something that is just so genuine. There are great things in our community that you can be a part of that are game changers."

Family Testimony: the Mortensen Family"Having our son, David, in WBA has been life-transforming. David was an introverted young man who was silently grieving the loss of his eight-year-old brother, who passed due to a rare disorder. Tim and Melinda spent hours with David teaching and improving his baseball skills but always putting his heart ahead of any baseball training. Then, WBA allowed David and me to serve in the DR on two trips to teach baseball and leadership skills. The confidence he gained through the constant encouragement forever marked David. After returning from these experiences in the DR, his grades went up, and David used his leadership skills, not on the diamond, but with children, to intern twice with his school working with younger children. He also began regularly volunteering with WBA helping kids with special needs, those in the inner-city, and teaching kids from the Boys and Girls Club. With this experience, David was offered a job at his school with their after-care program. Due to his success, Taylor University accepted David's application for admission, where he is planning to major in Elementary Education in January 2021. Recently, this introverted young man was named Associate of the Year at Mike's Carwash, and he has frequently been in the Top 10 in carwash book sales for the company. WBA, spe-cifically Tim and Melinda, have forever changed David's life through leadership development, love, and care. Caleb Kimmel and Jamie Frazier also deserve our praise for their partnership in David’s transformation." -Michael and Christine Mortensen

100% of parents replied "yes" when asked if their athletes demonstrate WBA core character traits at home.

Core 30 ProgramWBA’s Core 30 program provides year-round mentoring. Young people who want to learn more about baseball are paired with a knowledgeable instructor who cares about each student’s life beyond the game. These mentor instructors teach life lessons emphasizing WBA Core Character Traits. The value that WBA places on these traits is also communicated to parents, who also find support and friendship from our On Deck Director.

World Baseball Academy maintains a designated Scholarship Fund to which young people may apply to participate in the Core 30 program at no cost.

MAKINGANIMPACTWorld Baseball Academy partnered with New Covenant Church to host a multiple week summer baseball camp for boys and girls on the newly renovated Impact Center campus. The summer camp culminated with a Family Fun Day on the new Adaptive Field at the ASH Centre. “Our On Deck initiative continues to seek out opportunities to encourage, mentor, and develop our next generation of young leaders. The future is bright,” shares Melinda Petersen, WBA On Deck Administrative Director.

“Once again New Covenant Worship Center has been excited to partner with the World Baseball Academy. We are so grateful for their heart, support and commitment to the South East quadrant of our city. To watch their team work with our volunteers, provide a safe place, educate, and engage with the children of our community has been awesome to see. We look forward every year to share our baseball field with this great organization. World Baseball Academy, thank you for your great IMPACT!”

“We at the Summer Sliders Baseball Skills Camp, would like to thank the World Baseball Academy (WBA) for a great summer, learning baseball skills and developing core character

attributes. Our kids can use these on and off the field enhancing stellar

citizenship. I would like to personally express gratitude to Tim and Melinda Petersen, and all the dedicated

volunteers who show up all summer to run this camp for us.”

  • Q&A/ FAMILY TESTIMONY

    14

How long have you been part of WBA?

Landen (age 14): This will be my fifth year.Jackson (age 14): Five years.Cayden (age 15): Three years.Alyah (age 12): One year.

Parent Testimony: The Roach Family"The impact that WBA has had on my life and those of my family are invaluable. When I signed my son up, I thought I was getting extra baseball instruction; instead I have two sons who have gained not only baseball instruction but life support and instruction from an entire organization. They have a group of friends that they have spent several years with and are all working together towards one goal to help each other become better young men. I see them volunteer and invest in the lives of other boys and girls in the community by using what they have learned in their weekly groups. Not only do they do it because they have been asked but they do it because they genuinely want to help others the way they have been helped.

My family has been impacted by the relationships we have with the instructors. Their group leaders have invested personally in the emotional, physical, and mental health of my children. They approach each one differently based on their individual personalities. They make each young man feel important and special. They don't compare but help each to work on their weaknesses without judgement and praise them for their strengths. They support them in all aspects of their life by coming to school events and other activities for no other reason than to show that child their support.

My children have two people who support them with the love of parents, without judgement or comparison. My son has developed such a relationship with his leaders that he will say he wants to talk to them about certain issues because "it is just different talking to them" or "he just understands what I am trying to say." They have truly earned the respect of my teenagers. My family is beyond blessed to have found an organization who fosters these kinds of leaders." -Emily Roach

We asked a few of the kids we serve some questions about their time in WBA programs:

What's your favorite part of being in WBA programs?

L: My favorite part is my personal growth.J: I enjoy getting different opportunities to volunteer.C: My favorite part about the WBA is learning how to get better, not just in baseball but with leadership also.A: Being a part of a group and practicing/learning softball.

L: Definitely! It has made me a better person than I was going into the program. I now look for opportunities to lead in other parts of life like at school.J: Yes! It helped me become not as introverted. I am able to have conversations with important people and not be so quiet.C: Yes, they have improved way more since I've been in the program.A: I feel it has made me realize not only how to be a leader but how to be a good leader.

How has serving others/volunteering impacted you?

L: It allows me to see that my situation can be a lot worse and that helping others can really help you find yourself.J: It helped me meet a lot of people and gave me opportunities I may not have had without the program.C: It has made me a kinder person and allows me to connect with kids.A: I have yet to volunteer but I'm excited to start!

Has being in the program helped you in other areas of life?

L: Being in the program has helped me become more mature as I have grown. I have less issues with attitude and behavior problems than before; I am more respectful as a person. I have also learned to turn things over to God and put my faith in His hands.J: Being in the program has made me be more active in other areas of my life- school and other sports. 15

    WHY STEM?

World Baseball Academy STEM initiative is an innovative way to connect with ALL kids through the

science, technology, engineering, and mathematics of the game of baseball. Our fun, hands on “learning by doing”

curriculum allows staff and volunteers to build relationships with young people while helping them become of aware of future career paths and WBA core character traits.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math are integral to baseball. Applications of geometry, aerodynamics, balance, gravity, velocity, transfer of energy, and math measure every movement of every player, creating endless statistical models that track progress and determine the

elite. Baseball players excel when they understand what the numbers reveal and how the laws of physics apply to skill development and

game strategy. STEM subjects therefore come easily to WBA’s baseball instructors, but that is not why World Baseball

Academy includes STEM education in its programs. WBA uses STEM to ignite a desire for knowledge,

    a core character leadership trait.

The National Science Foundation estimates that

of the jobs available during the next decade will require STEM skills.

    REDEFINING SPORTSAND TECHNOLOGY

NEW HITTRAX SYSTEM BRINGS SCIENCE TO BASEBALL FOR BOTH TEACHING AND TRAINING

World Baseball Academy has been thrilled to launch new technology in the Baseball Lab. HitTrax is a top-of-the-line software that measures real-time stats and key performance

metrics of a player's pitch or swing. It is able to create simulated gameplay and predict the outcome of a swing in a gameplay setting. This gives the player valuable information

on their own technique to assist with training and instruction as well as an opportunity to participate in fun games and tournaments.

The HitTrax Leagues run by WBA consist of small groups of players in the same age level competing in teams. Players also have access to HitTrax during private

instruction and small group instruction. Coaches, instructors and players alike have found great value in the information and technological element that

HitTrax brings to the baseball lab.

HitTrax will be used in future STEM field trips at the ASH Centre to teach kids about science through baseball. The possibilities are endless with

  • 2020 SENIOR NIGHT

LEADERSHIP LUNCHEONWorld Baseball Academy was honored to host our 3rd annual Beyond The Game Leadership Luncheon on February 11, 2020. The event recognized 72 student athlete award winners from 18 area high schools for exemplifying leadership on and off the field. The highlight of the event was featured speaker Tamika Catchings sharing an inspirational message about dreaming BIG (Believe, Impact, Greatness) and striving to be great in all that we do.

The event is hosted by World Baseball Academy and sponsored by Optimum Performance Sports (OPS). A special thanks to Casa Restaurants, Varsity Photo, and our Beyond The Game Committee for their support of this outstanding leadership event. In the three year history of this event, a total of 192 student athletes have now been recognized for their leadership and being a difference maker on their respective campuses.

With the COVID-19 pandemic causing many high school seniors to miss their final sports season, WBA wanted to step up and help. This resulted in the 2020 Senior Night Celebration, a coming together of 104 high school senior baseball and softball student-athletes from 20 area high schools on July 13, 2020. The event recognized seniors in a ceremony where they were announced and escorted by their parents. It concluded with the students splitting into eight teams to play their final high school game together. We received lots of positive feedback from students, parents, and teachers alike and hope to continue the Senior Night event in the future.

  • DINNER ON THE DIAMONDS E C O N D A N N U A L

$145,000 RAISED FOR THE ON DECK INITIATIVE

    21

  • The second annual Dinner on the Diamond event to benefit our On Deck Initiative took place on September 12, 2020 and was a HUGE SUCCESS, raising $145,000 for our at-risk programs! We would love to thank sponsors, guests, volunteers, committee, staff, and everyone involved for their efforts to make this event successful! The event took place on one of the beautiful ASH Centre ballfields and consisted of a live and silent auction,

band, raffle, and lots of food and drinks for guests! The funds raised benefit WBA's On Deck initiative. These programs serve at-risk boys and girls ages 5 to18 to help them reach their full potential by overcoming challenges including socioeconomic status and intellectual or physical disability. Opportunities to learn, be mentored, and to serve are offered at little or no cost to families.
