The Mission of ULI Southeast Florida/Caribbean Leadership Institute is to cultivate leadership and life-strategy skills by teaching emerging leaders in the real estate and land use industries how the Southeast Florida/Caribbean region gets built. Throughout the eight-month program, the 28 participants enjoy a mix of lectures and experiences in which they collaborate with real estate, business, and public sector professionals in learning about the region and the complex issues confronting it.

Mr. Pierre Apollon is a licensed civil engineer and real estate executive with over 20 years experience leading public and private sectors in real estate development projects, alternative asset management and start-up ventures.

Earlier in his career, he provided forensic engineering consulting for national corporations and governmental institutions. Subsequently, he has held leadership positions in real estate at several Fortune 500 corporations including Citigroup and Johnson Controls. Presently, as a Principal for Apcon Group, Inc., Mr. Apollon conducts structural analysis of residential and commercial structures using the latest CAD technologies and leads the company’s investment strategies the acquisition and managment of multifamily investments to maximize cash flow and appreciation.

Mr. Apollon received his bachelor degrees in Civil and Architectural Engineering from the University of Miami and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Business in Evanston, IL. In 2015, he also earned his Masters of Science in International Real Estate from Florida International University.

He is also a strong proponent of the Arts having raised funds previously as a Pinecrest Foundation board member for the redevelopment of a local amphitheatre in Pinecrest Gardens and has been board member of the Adrienne Arstht Center for the Performing Arts since 2011. Additionally, Mr. Apollon is a member of Urban Land Institute, Miami Association of Realtors, Board of Professional Engineers and FIU’s Real Estate Alumni Affinity Council.

Michael R. Berkowitz is the President of Berkowitz Development Group. Berkowitz Development Group, Inc., a Florida corporation (“BDG”) is a full-service retail development company headquartered in Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida. BDG is widely recognized as one of the pre-eminent retail developers in Miami-Dade County having developed a number of high profile, strategically located and innovative retail projects. BDG specializes in gateway niche projects, involving complex development issues.

He is responsible for overseeing the global management of BDG’s portfolio, leasing strategies, new acquisitions, due diligence, marketing, feasibility analysis, and is heavily involved with the construction operations of current and future projects.

Over his career, Michael has participated in the acquisition, development, retail refinancing’s, leasing and management of nearly 1.5 million square feet of office and retail properties. Michael began his real estate career with Berkowitz Development Group in October of 2002. Mr. Berkowitz holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance, with a minor in Real Estate, from the University of Denver. Mr. Berkowitz presently holds an active Real Estate Broker’s License from the State of Florida and is an active member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and is an executive Board Member of the Miami Children’s Museum.

Paul Calvaresi is the Local Governmental Services Manager. Mr. Calvaresi has over 10 years of experience in public service. He holds an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Florida and a Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Florida Atlantic University. During his time at the Broward MPO, Paul has worked on a variety of projects ranging from financing, public engagement, local community transit, and mobility hubs. Paul is also an active member of the local community, siting on boards for the Urban Land Institute and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance.

I have been working as an architect & landscape architect for 20 years. Born and raised in China, I came to US to study landscape architecture in 2000. After working for EDSA and it’s joint venture in China for 8 years, I started my own practice in 2010 and co-founded China Council FL, a non-profit organization in 2015. My practice takes me mainly to various cities in the US, the Caribbean, Latin America and China which allows me to have an in-depth understanding of real estate market, trends, and economic development & policies in those countries, as well as to have established a strong network in both public and private sectors. With my unique ethnic background and global professional experiences, I found myself being the bridge to connect US and China as two cultures, acting as a liaison to Chinese investors and also ‘sell’ South Florida to China competing against California, New York and Washington. Together with other Council members, I aim to expand bilateral trade and investment between the State of Florida and China by facilitating and forming successful business partnerships and alliances with cultural sensitivity while maximizing its unique attributes and assets.

Santiago Eliaschev Principal RED Group

Santiago Eliaschev is Principal of RED Group, a boutique real estate brokerage and design firm based in Miami, FL. Santiago has over twelve years of experience working in architectural and urban design projects all around the world, including North and South America, Asia, and the Middle East. This has given him the opportunity to work in projects of all scales, ranging from urban interventions to single family homes. Additionally, Santiago is a licensed real estate broker and has over five years of experience in residential and commercial real estate. By combining his expertise in zoning, architecture and real estate, he has a unique perspective of the market and a keen ability to gauge value beyond what is readily visible. Santiago is also a team member at PlusUrbia, an award winning urban design firm recently commemorated for leading the Wynwood Neighborhood Revitalization District (NRD).

Santiago currently serves as a Member of the Transit, Connectivity and Mobility Committee at the Miami Downtown Development Authority (Miami DDA). He holds a Bachelors in Political Science from Brandeis University and a Masters in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.

Born and raised in Miami, FL, Craig Emmanuel has been a prominent real estate professional in Florida markets since 1997. Throughout his career, he has immersed himself in all areas of commercial and residential real estate, by gaining experience as a real estate and mortgage broker, an appraiser, an inspector, and a guarantor of title. Craig apprenticed under Herman Rackley, a prominent realtor of thirty plus years in his hometown of Richmond Heights, FL. He gained his sales experience from Coconut Grove Realty and International Business Brokerage & Realty Inc., in Miami, and his finance experience from Wall Street Capital Funding in Atlanta. As an instructor for XINNIX and The Florida Mortgage Broker School, teaching courses to mortgage brokers and bankers, he mastered the art and science of training individuals in the field. Pedro GassantAssociateHolland & Knight

Pedro Gassant is a Miami governmental advocacy and development attorney who focuses his practice on land use, zoning and procurement matters. Specifically, Mr. Gassant handles Comprehensive Development Master Plan (CDMP) amendments, zoning district boundary changes, variance applications and other matters in Miami-Dade County and the 34 municipalities within the county. In addition, Mr. Gassant advises clients in government procurement matters and prosecutes and defends bid protests.Mr. Gassant also has significant litigation experience. As lead counsel, Mr. Gassant successfully argued his first case in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, reuniting a father with his son under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction.Mr. Gassant is also heavily involved in the community. He currently serves on the executive committee of the United Way Young Leaders group and is the President-Elect of the Haitian Lawyers Association.

Jeff FeldmanSenior Vice PresidentUribe Construction

Currently the Senior Vice President of Uribe Construction, Jeff has spent much of his career in various roles throughout the real estate industry including development, property management, brokerage and construction. With an in-depth understanding of large-scale development projects, complex financing, and project management, Jeff possess a diverse professional history and a unique skill set. Jeff is the Vice Chairman of the City of Miami Beach Planning Board and has also served a member and Chairman of the Miami Beach Waterfront Protection Committee. Jeff is committed to a variety of issues in Miami Beach and was a member of the Mayor’s Ocean Drive Task Force and presently serves on the Miami Beach Affordable Housing Advisory Committee and the Miami Beach Community Development Corporation.

Brett GelsominoSenior Development ManagerZOM Florida

Brian GitlinAssociate Vice President, Real EstateUniversity of Miami

Brett Gelsomino is the Senior Development Manager for ZOM Florida. He was recently appointed to Vice President of ZOM Senior Living. Since joining ZOM in 2007, he has developed over 2,100 luxury multifamily units across multiple markets in Florida, at a cost value of nearly $600 million. He is experienced with a variety of residential and mixed-use product types, ranging from wood-frame lo-rise to 50-story podium hi-rise.

Mr. Gelsomino graduated from the University of Florida in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management. In 2007, he graduated with a Master of Science in Real Estate degree from the University of Florida. He is a licensed real estate broker, a licensed general contractor, and an instrument rated pilot.

Brian Gitlin is the Associate Vice President for Real Estate at the University of Miami and joined the institution in 2014. Mr. Gitlin is responsible for all university acquisitions, dispositions, leases, and management of off-campus property. These responsibilities include financial analysis, transaction structuring, deal negotiations, management of outside professionals, and financial reporting. In addition, Mr. Gitlin oversees the Parking and Transportation department at the University, which is responsible for all aspects of the parking and transportation program on the University’s Coral Gables campus. This program includes managing over 80 parking facilities, the parking permit system, and all transportation/mobility services.

Prior to joining the University, Mr. Gitlin worked at Agave Holdings, the real estate investment affiliate of the Jose Cuervo Tequila Company. At Agave, Mr. Gitlin established the operation in the United States, and was responsible for the finance and administration of the group’s extensive multi state commercial property portfolio. Before working for Agave, Mr. Gitlin was a Vice President with the New Dawn Companies, a Miami-based real estate developer with projects throughout the state of Florida.

Mr. Gitlin holds a Masters of Business Administration from the Duke University Fuqua School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Michigan. He is also a LEED Accredited Professional and member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Greg Griffith is a Senior Development Manager for Atlantic Pacific Communities, the affordable housing division of Atlantic Pacific Companies. As Senior Development Manager Greg is responsible for managing multiple development projects through all phases of the real estate development life cycle, including land acquisition, due diligence, underwriting, site planning, design, entitlements, project structuring, sourcing of equity and debt, management of project professionals, and construction/financial management through project completion, stabilization and GP interest transfers.

Greg has extensive experience with public-private partnerships, includ-ing partnerships with non-profits, housing authorities, and faith based agen-cies.His development experience includes a product mix of new con-struction/rehabilitation, garden style, mid- and high-rise developments serving families and elderly, transit-oriented and mixed-finance projects.

In the last three years with Atlantic Pacific Communities, Greg has completed 750 units with a total development costs of over $100 million. He is actively structuring financing and working through entitlements on another for 1,200 units across nine developments throughout the southeast. Greg began his career with the property management division of Atlantic Pacific Companies. During this time his responsibilities included day-to-day management of a mixed portfolio of multifamily, condominium, and commercial properties. Mr. Griffith received a degree in housing and consumer economics from the University of Georgia in 2009 and his Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Miami in 2015.

Alexandra Hall was born and raised in South Florida. In 2010, she graduated from Florida State University with a bachelors in Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies. After graduation, she traveled throughout and resided in North Africa until she returned to the U.S. to pursue her educational and career goals. She has spent the last five years as a residential and commercial real estate consultant, and managed a successful real estate brokerage team. In June 2017, Alexandra earned a Master of Science in Real Estate Development from the Huizenga College of Business at Nova Southeastern University. She specializes in team management, and legal and economic research, to navigating the political and regulatory requirements of any venture. While earning her masters degree, she worked at the West Palm Beach Planning Department and REG Architects, Inc. in downtown West Palm Beach, FL, where she learned to take full-advantage of tax credits, grants, and other incentives available through local and state governments, and various organizations. She has been grant writing, and obtaining public and private funding for educational and professional endeavors for the last ten years. She strives to develop her own real estate projects in the future. Alexandra holds leadership positions in several professional real estate organizations. She is an outdoor enthusiast, world traveler, and an avid philanthropist; volunteering most weekends to help the homeless in our community, or preserve our natural environment and wildlife.

George Hart is a business development professional with nearly 20 years’ experience in the construction and real estate industries. George got his start at 17 as a laborer at Rinker Materials. Throughout his time at Rinker, he occupied a variety of positions, including inside sales, dispatcher and account manager.

At this point, George saw a real opportunity outside of construction. With the real estate market at a low he saw a chance to make profitable investments. He still invests in real estate, repositioning distressed assets to create equity with long term holds in mind.

George continued growing professionally, becoming the Sales Manager for Adonel Concrete where he learned the importance of networking. He led the staff and landed Adonel their biggest project, the Marlins Park garages, totaling over 100,000 yards of concrete. George became Business Development Manager, first at Formcrete and currently at Moriarty where he has spent the last 3 years successfully leading the charge to diversify their portfolio.

Throughout his career in Business Development and Sales, George has valued his network. He’s actively involved with Urban Land Institute (ULI), NAIOP, Associated General Contractors (AGC), Construction Association of South Florida (CASF) and Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC). He is a Director for the Latin Builders Association (LBA), and is Immediate Past President of the Young Contractors Forum (YCF). His work at YCF has been most rewarding; he’s chaired their fishing tournament repeatedly, raising over $100,000 for charity. George is always eager to learn and grow his network.

Jorge A. Hernández is currently Director of Business Administration for Broward County’s Port Everglades Department, having joined the Port in 2014. In his position, Mr. Hernández oversees various sections that provide administrative, commercial and strategic support to the Department including: purchasing, human resources, risk management, franchises & business permits, Foreign-Trade Zone, property and real estate management, and parking garages. These areas represent $27 million dollars in revenue for the Port.

Prior to joining Port Everglades, Mr. Hernández served as Executive Director for the Port of Ponce on the South coast of Puerto Rico for a period just shy of a decade. His academic preparation includes a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Port Management from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia; and a Master of Science in Transportation Economics and Maritime Management from the Institute of Transport and Maritime Management in Antwerp, Belgium.

As Project Manager for Plaza, Robin Jones oversees all phases of preconstruction and construction. She prepares project plans, cost estimates, project schedules, and coordinates subcontractor activities and field logistics plans. She will also be involved with activities related to site safety, quality, and project administration, along with subcontractor and owner negotiations.

Robin has over 12 years of construction experience working on a variety of significant resident ia l, retail and transpor tat ion/inf ras t ructure projects. This experience, coupled with her established subcontractor relationships, will ensure an on time, in budget completion of your project.

Jason Kraus, a native of Floridian, graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor’s degree in Hospital Administration. After a successful two years with a local tech start-up, he spent nine months solo backing throughout Europe visiting 15 different countries. Upon returning to the United States, Jason obtained his Florida real estate license and began riding the bubble, staying the course to become a licensed real estate broker. During the economic downturn of 2007, he branched out and began raising funds for a private equity firm specializing in sustainable housing while also becoming the first real estate broker in the state of Florida to earn a United States Green Building Council LEED-AP designation. In 2012, Jason started managing a mid-sized portfolio of distressed assets throughout Florida, gaining “boots on the ground” experience with residential construction. In June 2017, Jason earned a Master of Science in Real Estate Development from the Huizenga College of Business at NOVA Southeastern University. Currently, Jason is employed with Palm Beach Gardens-based Johnston Group Development & Design, Inc. in the capacity of Development Manager. His role with the firm involves overseeing the development of both residential and non-residential properties including site selection, feasibility studies, governmental approvals and permitting, soft and construction cost estimating, project scheduling, and day-to-day coordination and communications of teams including architects, engineers, land planners, land use attorneys, contractors and government agencies. Jason has a passion for real estate and is focused on advancing to the development of sites for his own account in the near future. He spends his free time with his wife, Christina, and two Labradors, Bailey and Sailor, either boating on the water or traveling to foreign countries (always paying attention to the architecture, cultures, and the built environment).

Alyssa Kriplen has over 18 years of architectural and project management experience across many sectors of the industry including hospitality, commercial, transportation, urban planning, historic preservation, educational, multi-family and single family residential. In her most recent position at Shulman + Associates as Associate Partner and Projects Director, Alyssa focused on strategizing the team’s approach, navigating public review processes and managing staff to meet milestones and deadlines. She possesses a thorough knowledge of local zoning codes and land use approval processes and an extensive understanding of the Florida Building Code. Alyssa has designed and managed award-winning architectural and urban design projects in Miami Beach, Miami, Hollywood, Las Vegas, New York City, San Francisco and Melbourne, Australia.

Alyssa founded MAKwork Inc. as a design services firm in New York City, in 2003, and after expanding her experience in the South Florida market over the last 11 years at Zyscovich Architects and Shulman + Associates, has rejoined her husband in the company to spearhead the expansion into consultation and management for development companies during land use approvals, permitting, bidding and construction phases. The company continues to provide architecture and landscape architecture services across a range of sectors.

Alyssa also teaches an architecture elective to Miami middle school students.

John McWilliams has nineteen years of traffic engineering, transportation planning, and access management experience, 17 of which have been in South Florida. His practice includes traffic impact studies, corridor studies, operational analyses, and signalization design for both private- and public-sector clients. John has been especially successful in developing creative operational roadway improvements in constrained areas by combining his transportation planning knowledge with his design expertise. John has served as the lead transportation consultant for major developments such as Miami Worldcenter in Miami and The Diplomat Golf & Tennis Club redevelopment in Hallandale Beach. He has also led several major transportation studies for the Florida Department of Transportation and the Miami Downtown Development Authority. Additionally, John was an integral part of the project team for the US 441 Prospect Road “Breeze” Bus Queue Jumper signal design, a pilot program for FDOT District Four that demonstrated technological advances in public transit. John is currently the deputy project manager for the Interstate 95 Corridor Study for FDOT District Six, which consists of identifying the critical long-term needs of this corridor. John earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Ohio Northern University in 2000 and is a licensed Professional Engineer in Florida. He is member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), and he and his wife are active volunteers for Good Karma Pet Rescue, a 501(c)3 organization based in Broward County.

Michael was born and raised in New Jersey and attended Penn State University before moving to Florida to work with Langan Engineering. He has lived in South Florida working on land development projects throughout the state, the Caribbean and Latin America for the last eight years. Michael is currently a Senior Project Manager in Langan’s Fort Lauderdale office and is leading the company’s pursuit of projects in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. While he is not working on projects for his clients he enjoys cycling, concerts, sports and the outdoors. Michael volunteers his extra time with the local Penn State Alumni Chapter and with Sea Turtle Oversight Protection group in Broward County.

With more than 30 years in investment banking and finance, Timothy O’Neill joined NPI in 2014 to oversee its capital markets functions. NPI traces its roots back to 1890 and includes the completion of over $2 billion of construction of large-scale government, infrastructure, and private mixed-use projects. Vertically integrated, NPI manages the full spectrum of both internally-held and outside commercial real estate investments.

Beginning his finance career in 1983 at the First Boston Corporation (now Credit Suisse), he was responsible for the underwriting and syndication of a broad array of equity and fixed income securities. He had similar duties at Lehman Brother from 1991-1994, where he had specific responsibility for the underwriting, marketing and syndication of asset and mortgage-backed as well as preferred stock securities.Tim joined Bear Stearns as Senior Managing Director and co-head of its Global Debt Capital Markets Group, where he over-saw a department underwriting more than $50 billion of debt securities.

Recently, he has been a Managing Director of Golden Seeds, which in-vests in early stage, gender diverse enterprises. Tim sits on the board of PosData Inc. a Gig Harbor, Washington based provider of technology solu-tions. He is a former board member of Work Truck Solutions, Rapt Media, Inc., TowerCare Technologies, Inc., ColorModules Inc. and I2S Incorporated.

Tim has been active on both non-profit and industry boards. He is the president of the Apawamis Foundation, a former Trustee of the Taft School, the past president of the Investment Association of New York, and a former board member of the Bond Club of New York. Tim holds a BA from Colgate University, where he is a senior mentor in the Thought Into Action Institute, and is a member of the Colgate Alumni Council. He also holds an MBA from Columbia University.

Mr. Pateman began his legal career at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft in New York providing transactional legal advice to banks, life companies, and other financial institutions. Upon moving to Florida full time in 1998, he joined Shutts & Bowen, LLP where he expanded his real estate practice to include acquisitions and dispositions, title insurance, leasing, development, and related corporate matters, representing a wide range of clients from entrepreneurs to large institutions. He has extensive experience closing complex transactions such as Section 1031 exchanges and build-to-suit ground leases. After leaving the full-time practice of law in 2002, Mr. Pateman opened Empire Resources, LLC a brokerage and consulting firm. His expert lease negotiation skills, wide array of marketing expertise, and broad business network make him a valuable asset to the Cushman & Wakefield team. Mark currently manages the West Palm Beach and Boca Raton office with 25 brokers, 4.5M SF of Agency leasing portfolio, an average of 400,000 SF of occupier representation per year, and an average of $400M of investment sales in any given year. Will is responsible leading the underwriting efforts of Grass River’s property development company and assisting in all aspects of its ongoing value-add projects including design, construction management, leasing, and asset management. Will is also responsible assisting in fundraising and all major investment activities within Grass River Capital, Grass River’s investment management, loan origination, and commercial real estate debt markets asset services division. Will holds a Master’s degree in Real Estate Development + Urbanism from the University of Miami and B.S. in Building Science from Auburn University.

Jami Reyes began her career in public affairs and communications at Gordon Diaz-Balart; the firm later changed its name to Gordon Reyes & Co., once Jami became a name partner. After fifteen years at Gordon Reyes & Co., Jami started Jami Reyes & Co., a government relations and communications firm specializing in real estate clients. After eight years, Jami decided to go in-house at Swire Properties to manage the company’s community relations. She has since been promoted to Development Manager/Community Outreach where she works closely with the VP of Development to create community, government, and economic-related strategies for Swire’s current and future projects.

Jami is Honduran-born, Washington DC-raised, and Miami-adopted. She spends her free hours volunteering for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami and planning her next get-away.

She is an avid reader, a Miami Heat fan, an unabashed political junkie, and an aspiring writer.

Marc-Andre Roy, a Fort Lauderdale native, is the Director of Acquisitions for Ocean Land Investments, Inc. Roy, who has extensive knowledge of the South Florida real estate market, is responsible for exploring potential development opportunities and analyzing their feasibility on behalf of Ocean Land. His roles include securing opportunities with potential properties, studying market feasibility of the project, and running the appropriate financial models. Roy has been involved with family-owned Ocean Land Investments throughout high school and college, and for the last several years since graduation. Roy has been actively involved in the development of five buildings through acquisition, management of construction, sales, and marketing. Currently, Roy is spearheading the development of a new condominium project, AquaVue Las Olas, in Fort Lauderdale. The development, a five-story boutique building, featuring 8 loft-inspired residences, is currently under construction with expected completion occurring in the first quarter of 2018. Roy earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Miami, where his studies focused on entrepreneurship and real estate finance. He is active in the community and a member of the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce.

As President of the Construction Chamber in Aragua, Venezuela for many years he participated on many community activities on the health area creating better conditions for the most needed people.
