Message from thePresidentn 2008, then-President-Elect, Chris Buczynski returnedrom The Association of Junior Leagues Internationalnc.s Fall Conference inspired by the model of Issue-Based Community Impact which she had learned aboutand was instrumental in having The Junior League ofSouth Bend, Inc. adopt the model for our community pro-gramming. The model involved a paradigm shift from

project-based work to community impact through com-munity involvement, collaborations and strategies thatare based on an understanding of the community, servic-es provided and interests of our membership concerningone particular issue. As a result, instead of JLSB's volun-eer hours and funds being spread throughout the commu-

nity to an array of agencies that address multiple issuesand, therefore, make less of an impact, our resourceswould be concentrated on one issue as part of a strategi-cally developed program.

We began the following year by undertaking a systematicassessment of community needs in order to determine the

ssues facing our community and how JLSB could bestaffect positive change. After choosing to focus ourefforts on early childhood development as part of ourarger issue of improving education within our communi-y, last year JLSB provided Done in a Days, book studies

and trainings for members to learn about what needs tobe done to effectively address early childhood develop-ment and identified The Brain Train as a program thatwould accomplish the outcomes we seek to make.

After the time spent building and developing a plan forssue-based community impact, we are finally ready tobegin our programming in the area of early childhooddevelopment with The Brain Train. Yet as you will learnn this issue of League Lore, the Community ResearchCommittee has found our focus is still quite broad makingt difficult to define the impact or change JLSB is seeking

to make and compelling us to drill down our issue andfocus identification even further.

To me, the training opportunity that comes from narrow-ing our focus even more is what the Junior League is allabout. In 1901, Mary Harriman founded the first JuniorLeague to improve child health, nutrition and literacyamong immigrants living on the Lower East side ofManhattan. Realizing their lack of experience in dealing

with the issues that faced people seeking help at the set-tlement house where 80 Junior League members volun-teered, Mary Harriman and fellow League leaders broughttogether experts on the settlement movement to providelectures and instruction to League members. MaryHarriman found that with better preparation came greaterengagement, which is what impelled her to ensure thatJunior Leagues became effective training organizations.

So while JLSB provides our members enriching volunteeropportunities, it is the training our members receive thatsets it apart from other volunteer organizations in thecommunity. And by becoming more knowledgeable about

the aspects of early childhood development where Leaguecan make an impact as we refine our focus this year, wewill be furthering a cornerstone of the Junior League'sMission.

    All my best,

    JanetJanet HorvathPresident 2011-2012

Pam Newman, our Sustainer member, boasts one of the most memorableJLSB moments we've heard yet! She had the chance to meet Eunice Shriver in 1987 athe project chair when JLSB hosted a "Family Room" for parents of Special OlympiansPam is a JLSB veteran (chairing Thrift Shop to Holiday Ball to Nominating plus servvinga stint on the Board) and is a one-woman focus group for many of her hometown's educational institutions - she attended Adams High School, Holy Cross College, Saint Mary'sCollege (BS Degree) and the Univeristy of Notre Dame (MSA degree). She has servedour community in a myriad of ways, perhaps most notably for the last 18 years as program director for Leadership South Bend/Mishawaka. Pam's mastery of ball juggling igoing to come in handy for her this November - daughter Chelsea is getting marriedand son Corey (and his wife Kelly) are expecting. Our Active member and current Training Resources Chair is Laura O'Sullivan.A funny coincidence, she also has a Kennedy connection - she grew up dreaming ofbecoming South Bend's first female mayor, and during the last election, she escortedCaroline Kennedy to speaking engagements from Chesterton to Lafayette toIndianapolis. She's also active in the community in the Achievement Forum of SouthBend, Alzheimer Services and the March of Dimes. Laura moved back to her hometownsix years ago after stints in Washington, DC, Boston and Chicago. She currently liveson the St. Joseph River in Buchanan with husband Dan, son Casey (in 5th grade atStanley Clark) and dog Artie. Artie is both black and white blue and brown - fur andeyes respectively! Fall is Laura's time of year - she loves football season, but we'll haveto check to see which college team gains her loyalty . .. the Irish or the Boilermakers(she's a '93 Purdue Alum)! These days she's also availableto help all of us look beautiful as a Mary Kay independent consultant. Annual Training will be on October 11 at 6:30 p.m. Twotracks will be offered. The Brain Train Volunteer Trackwill be held at 315 West Jefferson, South Bend wheremembers wishing to volunteer at this year's project willearn proper guidelines for play with children, how to

nteract with the families and why play is so important inbrain development. It will also allow each League mem-ber the opportunity to explore The Brain Train play spacesand decide in what capacity they feel the most comfort-able volunteering. A Personal Wellness Track will be heldat the DoubleTree downtown and will include informationon nuturition and fitness.

Remember that under our new Membership Model, AnnualTraining is required for ALL Active Red members. AnnualTraining is an option for Active Silver and Gold members, however, in lieu of attending members need to receiveanother pre-approved training outside of League. Pleasecontact your Placement Advisor if you have any questions

    regarding these requirements.

    TRAINING

One of the training opportunities being offered this yearallows a member to earn one point toward their member-ship requirements by completing an online assessmentcontained in Tom Rath's book, StrengthsFinder, designedto measure your personal talent. Most people spend time

working on improving their weaknesses but do not spendmuch time developing or understanding their strengths.Research shows that when people are able to focus onareas that are strengths they are more engaged whichmeans they are more productive, satisfied and happy. This evaluation can serve as intra-personal tool to helpyou in your personal life, with your career and as a mem-ber in League.

JLSB will purchase the books in October for membersinterested in participating so please contact TrainingResource Chair Laura O'Sullivan at [email protected] 312.505.3102 by October 16. A training session will beheld on February 22 to review the assessments and what

they mean. This training session must be attended to earnthe point to satisfy your membership requirements.

Dear Sustainers,Welcome to the first of what we hope will be a great addition to LeagLore - the "new and improved" Sustainer Corner.

In an effort to streamline communications among Junior League'sSustainers as well as to integrate more effectively with active membewe've decided to "resurrect" the former, more detailed Sustainer Sectiof League Lore - some of you may even remember years ago when it wcalled "Hot Flashes."

The column will stop short of "did you know Jane had new draperiesinstalled," but we do want to know what's going on in your lives. Bigthings. You know - new jobs, kids' weddings, your own weddings, kidsjobs, who's having babies, funny stuff, Junior League memories, fabulotrips you're taking, etc. And send photos! We love that kind of stuff.

OK I'll start: I've had my first children's book published. It's calledClashmore Mike Comes Home and it's the story of Notre Dame's originamascot. Surprisingly, few people know that a little Irish Terrier was thfootball team's mascot from 1924-1965 before the leprechaun replacedhim. Anyway, it's a great story, and you can purchase it online atwww.ndclashmoremike.com, at the Notre Dame Bookstore or from me

Finally, Trish Ross hosted the Sustainer Committee at her home last month. This efficient little group nailed down sevedates and times for upcoming events:

Mary Harding has graciously agreed to host the Sustainer Holiday Luncheon at her home on Wednesday, December 8More details to follow.

Additionally, Linda Bancroft has agreed to host the Sustainer Spring Luncheon at her home in Erskine Manor onWednesday, May 23, 2012.

We're still hashing out details for the fall/winter Sustainer art activity. Last year's wreath making class at Fernwoowas fabulously successful and fun and is an option. Watch League Lore for more details.

Please keep me updated on what's happening in your world. Feel free to send me information at [email protected] are always welcome as long as we have space. I'm also open to suggestions for other types of information you'reinterested in reading in this section or ways you think we could improve it. Thanks so much!

f you missed the September General Meeting and wouldke more information on this years' project, The Brain

    Train, we have details!

Laying the tracks for healthy braindevelopment for infants and young

    children through play!!

earning starts at infancy, long before formal educationegins. Success or failure from ages birth to five lays theoundation for success or failure in school and further infe. Unfortunately, many low-income children are behindheir peers in cognitive and language development due tohe difficulty of their parents in creating a nurturing envi-onment for them. Consequently, these children will havehigher percentage of developmental delays.

The Family & Children's Center Counseling andDevelopment Services has created The Brain Train, a cut-ing edge new program that focuses on the importance ofarent education and cognitive health to promote schooleadiness and the general well being of children who maye at risk for developmental delays from ages birth toive.

The Brain Train will provide families with the knowledgend skills to enhance their infant or small child's healthy

rowth and development. Through the use of trained PlayConductors, families will play together and learn positiveways to interact using the different activities. The newacility has three rooms designed to meet the needs ofhildren ages birth to 12 months, ages 12 months to 3ears and ages 3 to 5 years.

The Brain Train Volunteer Opportunities: The Brain Trainnd JLSB have developed a wide range of volunteer oppor-unities so that everyone can participate at their ownomfort level, and you can be very hands-on or behind thecenes, whichever you prefer!

    1) Play Conductor: This volunteer position serves as thesupport person for The Brain Train staff. You will workone-on-one with families entering the Brain Develop-ment/Parenting Program. This position will afford you

the opportunity to monitor and connect with familieswhile teaching them the importance of play.

    2) Administrative Volunteer: This position will beextremely helpful behind the scenes to The BrainTrain staff by helping with tasks such as data entry, fil-ing and assembling take home care packages for thefamilies.

    3) Set up/Clean Up and Organization: Everyone like aclean room, right? This volunteer position will helpThe Brain Train staff set up for client appointments, organize, clean and put away toys at the end of theday, and assist with the purchasing and maintenance

of the items in the play areas.

    4) Volunteer Recruiting: By learning all of the volunteeropportunities you can now help The Brain Train staffrecruit new volunteers. You will be asked to partici -pate in volunteer training and help to mentor new volunteers. If recruiting is more appealing to you, TheBrain Train staff will provide you with the tools tomake phone calls to potential volunteers and organi-zations to gage interest in the program.

One on the most exciting parts about volunteering at TheBrain Train is that you do not have to choose just one vol-unteer position. You may want to start out behind the

scenes and eventually become a Play Conductor and workdirectly with the families.

The Brain Train is open Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00p.m. and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If you are interested in hearing more about these volunteer opportunitiesor to sign up please contact Becky Beckman [email protected] or 419.265.1717.

As this year's Community Vice President, it is my privilegeto work with Junior League's Community Advisory Board(CAB). The Community Advisory Board meets four timesthroughout the League year, and our first meeting washeld on August 24 at the May House. We not only had awonderful turnout but a very productive discussion onJunior League's marketing plans for the future.

For many of you who are new to our organization, you maywonder who the members of our Community AdvisoryBoard are. JLSBs Community Advisory Board members areindividuals who live, work or serve in our community, havethe expertise and skills to assist our League and serve asadvisors to the League to link it with the community. CABmembers have a proven track record of sharing theLeague's values, goals and objectives. Our advisorsinclude representatives from the education, communica-tion, nonprofit, legal, health services and financial indus-tries as well as sustainers from our own League. As advi-sors, our CAB members can counsel and assist on issues, projects and activities facilitating the League's mission, goals and specific needs. These people become a bridgeto a wider constituency. Bringing an outside voice to

League deliberations expands the League point of viewand allows for an external opinion to be heard.

    1) Early Childhood Development (including Health Wellness), 2) GED Issues, 3) Parental InvolvemenEducation, 4) Computer Literacy, 5) Primary LiteracyCareer Education and 7) Dropout Rates. After selec"Early Childhood Development" as our Focus, our memship worked to educate ourselves on this subject throrelevant Done in a Days, book clubs and trainings.

As the Community Research Committee prepared to mforward to the next phase of this model by identifyingadopting an Impact Statement, we sought feedback f

AJLI regarding our progress. It was at this time thawere reminded that the ultimate goal of this new prois to lead our membership through the essential exeof continual narrowing and refining of the area in wwe desire to make the most impact. Upon reflectinthis feedback, it has become apparent that while wetially identified "Early Childhood Development" as Focus, this would actually serve us better as our Issueimplementing this change, "Improving Education inCommunity" will become our Topic.

Current Tasks:With our Issue more specifically defined, it is now theof our membership to narrow our efforts even moridentifying a new Focus. The potential new Focus a

come from the list of seven that were identified bymembership after the community forum. The three tenders our membership found most related to "EChildhood Development" are: 1) Early Childhood Heand Wellness, 2) Parental Involvement and 3) PrimLiteracy. These were presented to the membership atSeptember General Membership Meeting at which members had an opportunity to informally nominateFocus area that most resonated with them. Community Research Committee will compile memfeedback along with current community data from varsources to identify our new, more specific and actionFocus.

Future Goals:Keeping in mind that issue-based community impact isger, deeper, longer-term and more enduring than a pect-based focus, the Community Research Committeebegin the process of identifying an Impact Statement narrows the scope of our efforts even more as we strivalign ourselves with the model presented by AJLI. Impact Statement will serve as the broadest definitiothe changes and results sought by the League's effortwell to serve as a rally point for JLSB's efforts to infuseIssue and Focus in all programming and fundraefforts. Beyond those important roles, the ImStatement will also set us on the right path as we idefy the Strategies and Tactics that will be used to mJLSB's vision a reality.

    Issue-Based Community Impact:

A Roadmapby Amy Stewart-Brown (A), Community Research Chair

Background:The past several years have brought about a change in theway we, as JLSB, think about the long-term impact wehope to have on our community. As we think back to thefirst exercises associated with our new model, we remem-ber a visit from The Association of Junior LeaguesInternational, Inc. (AJLI) super-star trainer Vicki Clark, who helped us to identify our Issue "Improving Educationin our Community." The next steps included a communityforum with local education experts that led to the identi-fication of our top seven potential focus areas including:

The Endowment Committee is looking forward to TheJunior League of South Bend, Inc. Annual GivingCampaign. We are excited to be challenged to raise addi-tional funding to support our organizations operatingexpenses through the interest earned on contributions to

JLSBs Endowment. Our five-year goal is growing theEndowment to cover forty percent of JLSBs operatingcosts. As our year progresses, we will provide moredetails on how we hope to raise the necessary funds thisyear and in the future as well as educate the generalmembership on different sources of the Endowment suchas planned giving. The Endowment Committee will alsoassess the sources and success of each appeal as well aslook into additional ways that we could grow ourEndowment. We have confidence that the members willstep up with their generous donations. Be on the lookoutfor your opportunity to make your gift. If every memberdonated to the Endowment, they would only have todonate $22, in order to hit our goal of $10,000. Every lit-

tle bit counts and you can make a difference! Thank youin advance for your anticipated support.
