President’s Column

I have been eagerly awaiting this issue of the Leagueline. I love the opportunity tohave a peek into the lives of our memberswith submissions from so many of you. Ihope you take the opportunity to participateevery year!

What a terrific summer we have been havingat the League events! In June, we enjoyed a delicious beefsteakdinner at the Ridgewood Unitarian Society, renovation design by Ross Mamola, AIA.Our program was on Starting and Financingyour own Practice. In July, we visited the Closter Library addition designed by Anthony Iovino, AIA.Our program was on developing staff to fulfill the roles you expect of them, andgrooming them to move up to more seniorpositions as well.We ended our summer events with a superGolf Outing at High Mountain Golf Club. The weather could not have been more glorious, the course was challenging (well, all golf courses are challenging to me!), and the dinner was delicious and enjoyable.Congratulations to all of our prize winnersand thanks to our sponsors. Terrific job KimV. Vierheilig, AIA!This past spring, AIA National imposedsome new procedures for accrediting AIAContinuing Education Programs. The newregulations require additional pre-certifica-tion of our speakers and inclusion of AIAslides in the presentations. This processrequires quite a bit more preparation andcoordination on the part of Russ Warnet, AIA,our continuing education liaison withNational. Russ immediately became familiarwith the new regulations and contactedeach of the speakers scheduled to provideprograms this year to bring their presenta-tions into compliance. In addition, he wentout of his way to assist the Programs andEvents Committee with gaining credit for a tour and a program under critical timeconstraints in June. Thank you for your outstanding efforts Russ!

Joe Sarra, AIA, new BOT member this year, has been expertly managing our e-mailrecords and blasts since January. Hisresponse to the large variety of requests forassistance he gets from many of the boardmembers to send out messages, receiveresponses, issue sign-in lists and provide upto date contact information is always timelyand endlessly supportive. If you are notreceiving e-mail from Joe on a monthlybasis or more often, please contact himimmediately to update your information. We all benefit from your commitment to the League Joe! Thank You!A special welcome to new BOT membersDonna Berdano, Associate AIA, Joe Donato,AIA and Ben Lee, AIA. All three volunteeredafter our request for new members in June.Donna will be working as the League repre-sentative to the Newark and Suburbansponsored Canstruction event on MondayOctober 23rd. This fun, creative, team build-ing event helps to fill the food banks beforethe holiday season. Please contact Donna toparticipate this year. Joe has volunteered onthe Special Saturday Tours Committee toassist with the planning of the great eventsscheduled for this fall. Ben will serve as ourliaison to the AIA-NJ AIA150 committee.Martin Santini, AIA, our AIA150 Championon the committee, has designed a veryexciting program for elementary school children to learn more about architectureand the AIA scheduled for April 2007 andwe need more members to volunteer tomake presentations at the school of theirchoice. Please contact Ben or Martin formore information and to sign up!I hope we have a great turn out at all of thetours, meetings and events planned for thisfall. Check the calendar in this edition andyour e-mail for more information on a program that interests you.

I came across this wonderful fencedriving along the Blue RidgeParkway in Virginia. This scenicparkway winds its way along themountain ridge in ShenandoahNational park. Is it a fence? Does it enclose a space? Does it form abarrier? Does it define a boundary?

We are visual creatures. It is this characteristic which has led most of us to ouravocation - Architecture . Images are often more vivid to us than others. When we travel or move about our own environment, certain things we see affectus in deep and lasting ways. It may be a building, a view, people, or anythingmeaningful of which you captured an image and want others to see as well.
