Welcome to American Young Voices 2016!From your Conductor, Francisco J. NúñezDear Teachers,Welcome to American Young Voices 2016! After a historic inaugural year, we welcome all our returning schools, as well as so many new ones! It is so exciting to have you, and we plan to carry on the American Young Voices tradition for years to come at the Prudential Center and other cities as well!

While the children are the stars of our performance, it is you the teachers who are our real heroes, and this is why we want to provide you with the best materials we can to help you teach the songs as effectively as possible. These materials include:

CD with Vocal and Accompaniment Tracks Photocopiable Lyric Sheets Sheet music of the Vocal Lines with Chords Conducting Notes Teaching Aims and Objectives for Lesson Planning in Standard Based Format

MUSIC PACKWe will present the music to you in two books this year! Book One includes the musical scores for our first five pieces only. Once you have paid your registration fee in full, you will receive Book Two which will include the remaining scores, information and instructions for the event, plus ALL recordings for our music. We have done our best to make sure the recordings, sheet music and lyric sheets all agree and provide the same information as each other! If you spot any differences, please use the recording as the ultimate guide. The medleys contain time stamps to make it easier to rehearse.

PART SINGINGEach time there is more than one vocal line to be sung, I have been very clear in the notes as to what to do. Initially, I recommend that you learn ALL parts as written! In the score, L refers to all the singers who will eventually be on my left, and similarly R on my right and C will be those in the center. Also, on the recording, when the music divides into parts the lower part will be found in the left channel or speaker, and the higher part in the right. If you are dividing your choir (and we hope you do!) you could initially position singers towards the appropriate speaker, or use a balance control to isolate the parts. Some of the recordings may be of choirs singing all the parts so you can have an idea of the entire song. Please have all the music memorized so it can be easier to perform and participate in the concert.

TEACHER WORKSHOPI look forward to meeting you at our Teacher Workshop (date TBA). Together, we will go through all the music, which will give you yet more insights as to how to communicate the music and what I am looking for on the day. You will also be able to speak with other colleagues who are participating, and meet the AYV team.

TEACHING AIMS AND OBJECTIVES FOR LESSON PLANNING IN STANDARDS BASED FORMATOur Choir Coordinator, Erin, created comprehensive teaching aims and objectives based on the National Core Arts Standards in Music. She will also post them on our online community, Yammer, so be on the look out! Go to http://www.americanyoungvoices.com/welcome/teacher-community/ to request access, if you have not done so already.

There is no doubt we are all going to have a wonderful concert, and it will be a performance your young singers will remember for the rest of their lives. However, the American Young Voices experience is about the journey that starts now, from the moment you first open this book, listen to the recordings, and begin enthusing your singers about what they are to learn.

I trust that you will enjoy the process too, and I look forward to seeing and working with you and your wonderful singers on May 26th!

General Teaching Notes from Francisco J. Núñez1. In terms of where to ask your singers to breathe, use the recording as your guide.

2. So many of the songs have a story telling quality about them, so teach the stories of the songs and their backgrounds, so that your students really know what they are communicating when they sing.

3. If notes feel a little high, take out the words and sing the melody to an ‘ooh’ sound in your rehearsal. This should encourage a floaty ‘head’ tone. Singing a little quieter can also have the same effect. For more ideas about teaching techniques, come to the Teachers’ Workshop!

4. Final notes. Please ALWAYS encourage final notes to last their correct length! Especially if they are long ones within a slower song.

5. When there is a division of parts, they split into the left and right channels of the CD tracks, so adjusting the balance control will enable you to hear the parts separately.

6. In a concert the size of ours the singers need to sing at the same time and with the same rhythm if they are to be crystal clear to our audience. At the core of each song lie its words, its story and its meaning. Please do all you can to encourage the singers to understand what they are singing about, and to desire to communicate each song’s message!

7. Please go through these notes carefully, writing some details onto your own score, so that whenever you use the music, these points are there for you to remember.

8. Important! The concert will be here before we know it, so encourage your students to study the lyric sheets, make copies of the recordings for them, and have fun when rehearsing the music!

9. Go to Yammer often for additional information, including lesson plans, or to ask questions! Also, share with others tips and tricks for teaching our music! Go to http://www.americanyoungvoices.com/welcome/teacher-community/ to request access, if you have not done so already.

POWER IN METhis is a song about encouragement, personal empowerment, and being internally resourceful. There are three verses, so once they are learned please practice the first lines in order often, so that during the two bar introduction to each verse the students know precisely what is coming next! The verses begin with lower notes which, as the sentiment becomes more positive, increase in pitch. Please make the last note of each verse ‘and I will feel empowered from within,’ grow and develop naturally into the chorus. You’ll need to split your group into two parts for measure 65, teaching both parts to each of them, and I will then split our massed choir into two on the day. Note that the top part ends high! This is followed by overhead claps, a guitar solo, and there’s something very important to rehearse here, and that is the vocal entry in measure 80. It will feel unexpected to begin with! Please keep the crescendo going in measure 88 as well as the long note at the end.

INVINCIBLEInvincible was used for the opening ceremony of HRH Prince Harry’s Invictus Games in 2014, which is featured on the album ‘Sound of Strength’ by the English cross-over -soprano Laura Wright. This song is sure to be an emotional and moving moment in our concert! Important things here are to keep the dotted rhythms, for example measures 21 and 23, crisp and precise, and to hold notes such as in measures 28 and 34 for their full value. The final phrase will need a lot of breath behind it, and hold the last note right to the end!

LEAN ON MEPlease note that on the recording, the UK singers sing “The YV” in the rap. Don’t let this confuse your singers! We will sing AYV!This is a very funky version of a classic song by Bill Withers. We start singing after four measures of introduction, and we start in two part harmony. I suggest if you choose to sing only one part then it is the lower part, but ideally, sing them both! The rests in both the choruses and the verses are important, and even though for example at the beginning of verse 1 it breaks the word ‘Sometimes’ into two halves, please still make that gap. Short, dry phrases are very much part of this idiom. At measure 69, we have a 3 way split, with half your choir choosing to rap the

same words they sang at the start. The others sing the repeated phrase “Make it funky” in two parts which repeats 4 times. This will need careful, patient learning before you get it all together. Get the individual parts really secure before you try it with all three. If you only want to perform one part, please rap the rap! We all sing again from m 77 onwards. Essentially, we need our performance to have a soulful, funky feel, so if there is any doubt as to what to sing or how to sing it, imitate the singer on the CD.

DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’We will join our special guest artist in singing the choruses of the rockin’ Don’t Stop Believin’!Keep the singing light and don’t push too much, even though it’s sure to be a show stopper. Again the harmonies are optional, but if you’re to choose one part, then can I please encourage you towards the bottom part.

POP MEDLEY 2016Well here it is, the part of our repertoire that you and I learn from our singers! Create your own moves and grooves please, and if I see you doing something interesting I might invite all the other thousands of singers to do your moves! In Trouble, there is a two- part opportunity; head for the lower part if you are only going to sing one and towards the end the notes might feel high initially but they aren’t. Change Oh to ooh for practise and those top E’s should spin out nicely. Keep the Blondie song fun and funky, and the words should be crisp and clear for The Script too. The sooner your singers can get comfortable with the syncopations in David Guetta’s Without You the better, and again encourage the long notes to last in measures 213 -216. A little groove with Lady Gaga, then we end with the Lego Movie Song, which I imagine will be familiar to most of your singers. Have lots of fun with the rap, and by all means come up with your own actions if it helps remember the words.

Notes from Francisco J. Núñez

POWER IN MEWhen the race is nearly doneAnd I feel I can’t go onI know I can do something about itMy heart will start to raceMy body find the motionAnd I will feel empowered from within,

I’ve got the power in meYou’ve got the power in youI’ve got the powerP-p-powerGot the power in meNobody’s gonna hold me backNobody’s gonna silence my wordsNobody’s gonna close my mindI’ve got the power in me!

When someone’s needing helpAnd the world just walks on byI know I can do something about it.I’ll stand up for their rightsMy voice will find the wordsAnd I will feel empowered from within

I’ve got the power in meYou’ve got the power in youI’ve got the powerP-p-powerGot the power in meNobody’s gonna hold me backNobody’s gonna silence my words

Nobody’s gonna close my mindI’ve got the power in me!

When my mind is closing downAnd I’m lacking inspirationI know I can do something about itNo one can stop me learningCreate my dreams and futureAnd I will feel empowered from within

I’ve got the power in meYou’ve got the power in youI’ve got the powerP-p-powerGot the power in meNobody’s gonna hold me backNobody’s gonna silence my wordsNobody’s gonna close my mindI’ve got the power in me!

We got the powerYou got the powerI got the power The power in me!

(Part 1)Got the power!Got the power!I got the power in me!Got the powerGot the powerI got the power in me!

(Part 2)We got the powerYou got the powerI got the powerThe power in me!We got the powerYou got the powerI got the powerThe power in me!

(All)I’ve got the power in me!In me!

I’ve got the power in meYou’ve got the power in youI’ve got the powerP-p-powerGot the power in meNobody’s gonna hold me backNobody’s gonna silence my wordsNobody’s gonna close my mindI’ve got the power in me!

Lyrics 2016

INVINCIBLE(All)When all is lostAnd hope is goneWhen life is frailAnd hearts are wearyThe echoed words unbeaten stillWill show our strength and dignityTo dream the dream of victoryTo feel the fight that drives us allTo take a place in historyAnd bring home our hearts for thee

(Choir 1) And when we hear those distant drumsAnd when we feel our hearts grow strongerWhen we see the crowds draw nearOur fears dissolve our heads held highTo dream the dream of winners pastTo feel the fight that drives us allUnited strong, Forever faithfulWe hear the cries of victoryI am proud, I am strongI have fight and I have spiritThrough sacrifice and scars of oldUnconquered still we stand as oneTo dream the dream of winners pastTo feel the fight that drives us allUnited strong forever faithfulWe heard the cries of victory When we look back from where we cameWe find our placeWe rise againWe feel the fight that drives us on to victory!

(Choir 2)Hear those drumsFeel our hearts grow strongerSee the crowds draw nearFears dissolveOur heads held highTo dream the dreamTo feel the fightAhUnited strongForever faithfulAh!I am proud I am strongI have fight and I have spiritThrough sacrifice and scars of oldUnconquered stillWe stand as oneTo dream the dreamTo feel the fightAhUnited strongForever faithfulAh!To dream the dream of victoryWe feel the fight that drives us on to victory!
