Striving for excellence on and off the water

Leander Club is the most prestigious and successful rowing club in the world, with 111 Olympic and 1 Paralympic medals won by our members up to and including the London Olympics in 2012.

Founded in 1818, we are recognised globally for our achievements, at Henley Royal Regatta, the World Championships and the Olympic Games.

As home to rowing heroes like Sir Steve Redgrave, Sir Matthew Pinsent, James Cracknell and Double Olympic Champions Steve Williams and Pete Reed, the club aims to attract and develop high potential young oarsmen and women such as double Olympic Silver medallist Debbie Flood, by providing state of the art facilities and world-class coaching.

But it has a great deal more to offer. Alongside rowing we run a private members club which is also open to non-members. Any business, organisation or individual can pay to use Leander’s facilities, which include:

Leander and Henley Royal RegattaLeander is inextricably linked with the Henley Royal Regatta. The Regatta started as long ago as 1839. Later, in 1896, as Leander’s rowing pre-eminence was seen to be matched by Henley’s excellence as a venue, Leander decided to build a new clubhouse there.

Club emblem Leander’s emblem is the hippopotamus, known in Africa as ‘King of the River’, the only animal equally at home on land and water.

Its colour is pink (officially cerise), as is Leander’s club tie. Very few, if any, other organisations in the world have a tie that is a single colour without any emblem or other marking. Only members with distinguished service to rowing are permitted to wear the coveted pink livery.

Leander was a figure in Greek mythology and the lover of Hero, virgin priestess of Aphrodite. Their love story was told by the English poet and dramatist Christopher Marlowe in his poem ‘Hero and Leander’ (1598).

Leander Club exists to attract and develop young high-potential oarsmen and women who wish to represent Great Britain. Leander Academy provides state-of-the-art facilities, equipment and world-class coaching capability. The Club comprises over 3,500 members who fall into three main categories: Full Members The long standing criteria for Full Membership is based on ‘good fellowship and proficiency in oarsmanship’. The rowing ‘proficiency’ criteria being met by those with high-level rowing achievement or with special services to the sport of rowing. Full members wear the coveted ‘Leander Pink’.

Non-Rowing Members The Club has a strong non-rowing membership of around 1,000 who wish to make a positive contribution to the social life of the Club year round. They wear the Club hippo tie and in most other respects have the same privileges as Full members. They share the ethos of the Club, including its core values of teamwork, discipline, excellence and winning.

Athletes Those aspiring to join Leander’s Academy do so through a training process. The vast majority of Academicians are elected to Full Membership in due course.

Becoming a MemberApplication forms may be requested from the Club office or downloaded from the website. Details of membership categories and eligibility can be obtained from the office or website.

Applicants’ suitability is assessed by Leander Committee which normally meets during the last week of each month.

Once the election process is completed, all members and their guests may use the Club’s meeting, dining, accommodation and bar facilities throughout the year and may enjoy the facilities laid on by the Club during Henley Royal Regatta.

Further information on the joining process, criteria, benefits, rules and membership fees are available on-line at www.leander.co.uk, and enquiries are most welcomed by contacting the Club Office on 01491 575782.

Striving for excellence on and off the water

Henley Royal Regatta is the world’s best known rowing regatta and continues to be one of Britain’s top sporting and social occasions. Founded in 1839, the event subsequently blossomed, eventually gaining Royal patronage.

Leander Club’s history is intertwined with the growth of the Regatta, a relationship sealed when Leander moved its HQ from London to Henley in 1896.

The Regatta’s history is long and colourful. And in recent years it has succeeded in moving gracefully with the times, without losing its

essential character. In parallel, British Rowing has enjoyed an extraordinary renaissance, and Leander Club has played a major role.

The Regatta never fails to be an annual highlight for Leander’s members, both on and off the water, while competitors find Henley a unique experience.

All fully paid-up members of Leander Club are able to make reservations for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner on each day of Regatta. Allocation is on a first-come, first-served, basis

However, the office is always willing to discuss enquiries about events in the Regatta build-up and about evening functions during Regatta week itself.

The Regatta courseThe Regatta course has always been 1 mile 550 yards upstream.

The two racing stations are Bucks and Berkshire (towpath side), the latter enjoying a very slight advantage at the start and finish, the former gaining a slight edge at the halfway mark.

Intermediate timing points come at the Barrier (about 2 mins into the race) and Fawley (halfway)

Two-lane racing often favours a fast start and early dominance; 6-lane events tend to be more tactical.

For more information about what is on offer at Regatta please contact on 01491 575782 or email [email protected]

Your most important clients need to be kept on-side, but if the prospect of yet another round of standard restaurant fare fails to inspire you, why not bring them to Henley Royal Regatta as guests of Leander Club?

Striving for excellence on and off the water

Leander is recognised internationally for the extraordinary achievements of its athletes who have won Olympic gold at every Games since 1984 and a total of 111 medals and 1 Paralympic medal since rowing was introduced as an Olympic sport – more medals than any other single-sport club in the world.

As the spiritual home of world rowing, Leander has nurtured some of the country’s most decorated Olympic rowing legends including Sir Steve Redgrave, Sir Matthew Pinsent, James Cracknell, Pete Reed, Steve Williams, Mark Hunter and Debbie Flood. Delivering approximately half of the GB team rowing athletes at any World or Olympic championship, the club develops young, high-potential oarsmen and women by providing state-of-the-art facilities and a world-class coaching capability through Leander Academy.

Actually, it’s not as daft as it might sound.

Because Henley is also the home of a company called Bremont.

And, over the last ten years, we have developed watches for more than forty different squadrons, both here and in America.

The US Navy asked us to design a timepiece for the elite pilots who train at their school in Patuxent River, Maryland.

People who cross time zones about as frequently as the rest of us cross the street.

The result is a chronometer with an adjustable 24-hour hand, that can display local time anywhere in the world, together with Universal Coordinated Time (the standardized time zone used by the military).

Built by hand in our workshop, the mechanical movement undergoes an arduous testing process (something it has in common with its wearers) and is 99.998% accurate.

The case is made from a stainless steel that’s seven times harder than anything you’ll find in conventional watches. (We bombard our steel with electrons to toughen it up.)

Then we add not one, but nine layers of anti-reflective coating to the sapphire crystal for maximum clarity and hardness.

Some might call all this excessive. But it’s just the way we do things here in Henley-on-Thames.

The question is, how do you get your hands on one of these fine watches?

Well, if you’re between the ages of 17 and 34, and an American citizen, you can of course apply to join the US Navy.

But if for any reason that proves problematic, you’ll be pleased to hear we manufacture a version for civilians, the Bremont World Timer ALT1-WT.

For this, you need only apply within at your nearest Bremont retailer.
