PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Happy Easter!
We start the month with improvements to the bar. The
club will be closed April 2-6 while our maintenance
superheroes work on the walk-in cooler. We could use
help from members in the second half of the month with
repairs and painting the bar area. If you’re available,
contact Jon Shogren for times and additional details.
Silvia and the dance group will be traveling to the James
Gibson Library (100 W. Lake Mead Parkway in Henderson)
on April 7 to perform a German cooking and dance
demonstration at noon. Your presence at the event will be
much appreciated.
Entertainment will be offered every Saturday night this
month, so make sure to check the calendar and Facebook
for more information regarding meals and entertainers.
We will also have Maifest celebrations on May 12 and
May 19. There will be dancing, German music from the
Ginger Snaps, and food and drinks galore, so make sure to
save the dates.
See you at the club!
Leanne Crabtree

Sign up for spring tournament
You’ve still got time to sign up for our spring tournament
on Saturday, May 5. It will be a four-person scramble
picked from a blind draw. We need plenty of A, B, C and D
players.
Cost of the tournament is $50. We’ll have lots of prizes
awarded during our ceremony at the club following a great
Cinco de Mayo dinner. Sign up at the club or text me
at 7028061294.
On Nov. 3, we will be having our annual GASCON memorial
tournament in Laughlin. We will be staying at the
Edgewater Hotel and Casino, same as last year. We will
meet on Friday, Nov. 2, and play the next day.
Last year we had an amazing turnout and expect the same
this year. We will have fun activities and prizes for golfers
and anyone who wants to join the party. Because of the
size of the facility, we are limiting the turnout to the first
80 people to sign up. Sign up at the club or text me.
To make a reservation at the Edgewater, call and let them
know you are with the German Club or GASCON. We get a
discounted rate of $62 a night plus tax. We need 35 rooms
to make the event work, so please, don't stay at any other
hotel. See you on the course.

Taking over the tap
Come to the German-American Club on Friday, April 20,
for ABK beer. We will have an ABK representative at the
club to officially introduce us to this Bavarian brew. Cost
is $20 for members ($30 for non-members) for unlimited
ABK beer from 6-9 p.m. You can also take home the ABK
pint glass. We will be serving a slider plate by Karin for
$6.
Sunshine report
Jerry Epps is in the hospital and not doing very well. All of us at the German-American Club wish him a speedy recovery. Also, we will have a memorial balloon sendoff for Stan Ruben at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 22.

A good crowd showed up for the club’s St.
Patrick’s Day dinner with corned beef and
cabbage cooked by Rita and Alwine and music
from Melody and the River Cats.

Big band jazz leader Jimmy Wilkins brings his
New Life Orchestra back to the German-
American Club from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, April 8, a
chance for members and guests to catch one of
the glowing embers of the trailblazing
American jazz scene of the 1940s and ’50s.
While not quite as famous as his older brother,
Ernie, who died in 1999, Jimmy holds his own as
a trombone player, music arranger and band
leader as he approaches the century mark.
Jimmy joined the Count Basie Band as a
trombonist in 1951, recommended by his friend
and Basie’s great alto saxophonist, Clark Terry.
Brother Ernie played tenor sax for the Count.
The 96-year-old musician lives in Henderson
and carries on the legacy of icons such as
Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
Marsha K, who leads Tuesday night jazz at the
German-American Social Club of Nevada, has
booked Wilkins and his New Life Orchestra at a
number of venues around Las Vegas, including
Black Label, McDonald Ranch and E String.
“I’m stimulated,” Wilkins said in a 2009
interview with the Las Vegas Sun. “That’s what
music does for you. I used to joke and say, ‘I’m
going to be 100 years old and conducting an
orchestra.”
Admission to the concert is $12 for members,
$15 for nonmembers.
