Director

Since the beginning, Taller de José has understood well the concept of taking a “leap of faith.” From humble origins of opening our doors before we felt ready, to accompanying the first client to a courthouse we’d never been to, the early years were full of leaping into new, unknown territory. And still today, after refining and honing our services and processes, we continue to leap, seeking to innovate, improve, and respond to changing needs.

This past year, we implemented a new strategic plan, grew our revenue by over 20%, served an additional 150 clients, and piloted a partnership to offer accompaniment services out of the Quinn Center of St. Eulalia in the western suburbs. It has been a year of many leaps and bounds.

And it has been a year of much faith. Each day, our clients put their trust in us, sharing their stories and opening their hearts with the hope of finding a companion along their journey. Each year, new interns and volunteers give of their time, energy, and hearts to learn, grow, and be of service through accompaniment. Our community partners put their faith in us as they refer their clients or build partnerships with us to work toward collaborative goals. And so many donors and foundations express their trust in us through their financial gifts, knowing we will steward them well.

Thank you to all who have taken a leap of faith to join us in our mission of accompaniment. We look forward to another year full of many more opportunities to do so with you by our side.

In service,

Anna Mayer, Executive Director

This past year, we implemented a new strategic plan, grew our revenue by over 20%, served an additional 150 clients, and piloted a partnership to offer accompaniment services out of the Quinn Center of St. Eulalia in the western suburbs.

Dear Friends of Taller de José,

Page 3: Leap of faith - Taller De Jose · 2019. 11. 8. · Director Since the beginning, Taller de José has understood well the concept of taking a “leap of faith.” From humble origins

Julio*: Working with a first time Compañero, I took a leap of faith and stuck with him as we worked together on my journey. As the months passed, we developed a friendship and trust in each other. I gained enough faith and confidence in Tim to invite him into my therapy appointments so that he could advocate for me at my lawyer’s office with information from the counselor. When we said good bye the last time, I thanked him and told him he had been a good Compañero; I appreciated the work he had done for me.

* Client names and details have been altered for client confidentiality.

Tim: As a JVC volunteer, committing to a year of service in a new city, with new people, and new challenges can be daunting. Insecure in my abilities as a first-time Compañero at Taller de José, I took a leap of faith in my work and did my best to help our clients with whatever they needed. Having clients like Julio take a leap of faith, and trust me with their stories and journeys, their fears and hopes, was the most significant success of my work. Having his trust and faith as I joined him in his therapy sessions helped me become a better, humble Compañero, knowing that every journey is different, but sometimes a companion can make all the difference.

This year would not have been possible without the support of many individuals and organizations, and we are deeply grateful for their generosity. The following list includes contributions made during the 2019 fiscal year (July 2018-June 2019) and is not exhaustive.

“TDJ could not have been a better place to have a volunteer experience. Between the supervision and work culture it has given me so much to consider for future employment. I now know more about myself and the values I will look for in a work place and what I need in order to succeed.” – Taller de José intern

Every attempt was made to include all contributions. Taller de José apologizes for any errors.

“It has been a community whose purpose is to walk alongside others and connect them to services. I have been able to see how Taller strives to have everyone who enters our door feel welcomed and heard. The community has become a second home to me. Taller has continuously given me an endless amount of love and support. When I first arrived at Taller de José, I didn’t know what I was expecting or what I could provide. Now, I’m leaving with a renewed sense of confidence, love and direction in my social work journey.” – Taller de José compañera intern
