1. Introduction
According to Wikipedia, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility
of a website or web page in search engines’ un-paid or organic search results. In general, the earlier
(or higher ranked) and more frequently a site appears in the search results, the more visitors it will
receive from the search engine's users.
Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a form of Internet marketing that involves the promotion of
websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (also known as SERPs) through
both on-page and off-page optimization as well as through advertising (paid placements,
contextual advertising, and paid inclusions).
But what is SEM in comparison with SEO (Search Engine Optimization)? Well, SEM actually
incorporates SEO, so you can think of it as a superset of SEO. While SEO deals with improving the
visibility of websites in search engines through natural or un-paid techniques (getting indexed in
major search engines, preventing crawling where needed, improving cross-linking between your
pages, doing keyword research, writing content that includes your targeted keywords or phrases),
SEM includes both organic search results and paid search results (SEM methods include using
AdWords advertising, Pay Per Click advertising, article submission, paid inclusion in SERPs, use of
web analytics, backlinks research and getting quality inbound links).

2. Tips & Advices
1. What to avoid in order to stay out of trouble with search engines:
• Don’t'use'hidden'text'or'hidden'links;'
• Don’t' employ' cloaking' (presenting' different' versions' of' your' pages' to' search' engines' and' humans)' or'
lighting'fast'java'redirects;'
• Don’t'load'up'your'pages'with'irrelevant'words;'
• Don’t'create'multiple'pages,'subNdomains,'or'domains'with'substantially'duplicate'content.'
2. Every page of your website stands on its own.
Every page of a website should have unique titles, descriptions and keywords tags. The
description tag should describe only that page; the keyword tag should include keywords
and key phrases just for that page, and they should reflect the contents of the page (also
make sure to use keywords and phrases that you want to rank well for in search engines).
Also, do not make the mistake of including every possible keyword that represents your
website inside a page’s keywords tag. Again, make your keywords Meta tag specific to each
page.
Page 8
3. Do you have a site map on your website?
In Google’s Terms of Service, they suggest that you use a site map (usually written as
“sitemap” in one word). A site map is a list of pages of a web site accessible to search engine
crawlers or human users. It can be either a document or a web page that lists the internal
pages of the web site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion. This helps visitors and
search engine bots find pages on the site. But don’t rely only on a site map as a navigation
means – good navigation elements like menus and side links will have a great positive impact
on your website.
There are many excellent programs and online services that will create site maps for you, and
after you get one you will have to put a link to your site map on every single page of your
site, and then link to your other pages using link texts that describes those pages.
4. Housekeeping your website exhibits how professional you are.
• Do'you'update'the'copyright'notice'and'the'date'of'the'last'website'update'on'every'page'of'your'site?''
• Do'you'regularly'check'your'content'for'grammar'and'spelling'errors?'
• Do'you'keep'your'website'always'up'to'date?'Always'avoid'having'a'website'that'was'last'updated'a'few'
years'ago.'
5. Use only one H1 tag per page, and use targeted keywords in the tag.
Page 9
The <H1> tag should be toward the top of the page, and make sure it captures your visitors’
attention as soon as they land on that page. Also, your first paragraph or the first words you
use should be interesting and designed to hold your visitors’ attention. If you don’t grab
their attention and hold it in the very beginning, they’ll hit the back button and go back to
the search results – it’s as simple as that!
6. A tip on freshening up some of your Title tags.
Think about this. Turn some of your titles into a question. Asking a question is a great
attention getter. For example:
N'Where'on'earth'would'you'go'if'you'had'your'pilot'license?'
N'What'would'you'do'if'your'career'would'be'terminated?'
N'When'should'you'submit'your'web'pages?'
By asking a question in your page’s Title tag, you create more response because it makes the
reader think.
7. Did you know something happens around the 100-page mark?
Did you know that there is some relevancy advantage in larger sites at the point that you
begin to have around 100 pages or more indexed? Something seems to happen around the
100-page mark, so remember to focus on building quality content of genuine value to your
readers.
Page 10
8. How fast do your pages load?
Did you know that if your page loads too slowly, you could be discouraging some search
engine robots from crawling your website? Try and ensure your page loads within less than
20 seconds (or even faster). If your graphics are too bulky, check out a service called
http://www.optiview.com to accelerate your page loading speed.
But loading speed isn’t affecting only search engines – it also affects your traffic because
visitors hate slow websites or pages. Usually, if a page isn’t loading in less than 5 seconds,
most of your visitors (if not all of them) will turn around and leave your site faster than
they’ve already waited for it to load.
9. Prominence means how close to the beginning a keyword appears.
The prominence is referred to as the location / placement of a given keyword or phrase in the
HTML source code of a web page. The higher up in the page a particular word or phrase is,
the more prominent it is and thus the more weight it is assigned to by search engines. So you
should form a habit of starting your title tags with a good keyword rather than "Welcome
to..."
10. Next time you are working on an important sales letter, remember to spend at least
50% of your time working on that all important headline.
Page 11
This includes both the Title tag and your main <H1> header tag. Little changes to these tags
can make huge impacts with a little thought.
11. Content is king and links are queen.
Always be sure to have good, well-written and unique content that will focus on your
primary keyword or keyword phrase. And always use/publish fresh content to improve your
rankings and add more relevancy to your site. Remember that you can get much more
relevancy for "content freshness" than you may expect: don't just dump a bunch of new
content on your website, but consistently add new articles or content on a regular basis.
Then watch how the search engine robots behave when you start doing this consistently.
You should also build a network of quality backlinks using your keyword phrase as the link
(avoid using text links like "Click here" or some other irrelevant variations - these will
confuse search engines). And remember that quality beats quantity, because having a lot of
poor quality links could hurt your site when you could use just a few quality links.
12. PageRank is important, but you don't have to obsess about it.
PageRank is just a small piece of the ranking algorithm used by search engines, so always
think about this situation: a site with lower PR can actually outrank one with a higher PR.
Also, when link building pay attention to the PageRank of the pages you find. It is wise to
pick only high PR pages as your backlinks because these carry more weight to your own
Page 12
pages. And a word of warning: if you find a website with a high PR, that doesn't mean that
its pages will also have high PR values.
13. Avoid stuffing your content with the targeted keywords or phrases.
Search engines always look at how many times a keyword or phrase was used inside your
pages, and if they notice an abnormally high usage of these then you will be penalized.
14. Search engines don't see images or videos.
Always add captions to your images, and even ALT attributes to your IMG tags to properly
describe what the images depict (ALT attributes should also include one of the words
"image" or "picture"). These will help both search engines and visually impaired people. And
if it's the case, also pay attention to the surrounding text because it can be of great
importance when ranking your page. This tip is also valid for videos.
15. SEO isn't a one-time process, not even a once-in-a-month event.
You can end up doing SEO on a daily basis, because search engine algorithms change
regularly, and any technique or strategy you have used may turn out useless the next day.
This isn't always the case, but it's better to be safe than sorry. That's why SEO is seen as a
long-term job, and that's why the results won't be seen instantly.
16. Choose your domain wisely and make your URLs SEO-friendly.
Page 13
Did you know that a website's domain name is also important to SEO? That's why you should
think about getting a domain name that includes a keyword that you want to target for in
search engines, or even a key phrase. However, this will not guarantee you top ranking, but
consider it as a piece of the SEO pie, or a step closer to getting a top ranking.
Also make sure that the names of your website's links are SEO-friendly, that means using
words and keywords inside them ("/page-for-specific-keyword.html", "/about/services/" or
something along the lines) instead of using numbers or other cryptic texts like
"/index.php?p=123".
17. A blog will bring a lot of value to your website if used properly.
If your website's content will be rarely changed or updated, make sure you create a blog for
your website to feed search engines with fresh content on a regular basis. But blogs should
be used even if your site will get updated frequently, because blogs are an invaluable source
of unique and fresh content, especially when you make others participate to your blog.
18. Think again if you want to use Frames or Flash technology.
Flash has always been a problem for search engines, and so do frame tags. So my advice
would be to avoid using frames at all, and to use Flash sparingly for videos and other
presentation elements on your website and not for the entire design. If, however, you choose
Page 14
to make a full-Flash website, it is recommended to also make a non-Flash version of your site
for search engines to be able to crawl and index it.
19. Are you working toward getting links to your internal pages?
If any of your internal pages are of particular importance to you, work on building some link
popularity to those pages individually. Remember that link popularity is page specific, not
site specific.
20. How compelling is your Title tag?
Choose your most important key phrase. Search it in Google and carefully study the top 10
results. Which is the best-written title? Which is the most captivating? Which grabs the
reader by the throat and makes him or her want to click on the link? Is it the #1 ranked
result? Not necessarily, is it? Is it your listing?
If it's not your listing, and especially if you're having problems with clickthroughs for this key
phrase, how can you change your title to make it more intriguing and designed to pull in
traffic? We're talking about clickthroughs here. You can often beat the top ranked sites if
you have a more appealing and captivating title.
Make a list of title changes, being sure to include your key phrase in the title. Set it aside and
don't look at it for two days. Then, bring it out again and study the list again. Begin culling
Page 15
down the list. Get others' opinions. Try a new title, and see if your clickthrough rate will
improve.
21. How compelling are your Meta descriptions?
• Have'you'used'your'important'keywords'and'key'phrases'in'the'description'tags?'
• Are'you'taking'the'time'to'write'unique'descriptions'for'each'of'your'pages?'
• Have'you'included'good'calls'to'action'in'your'descriptions?'
22. Don’t give search engines just one way to find your pages.
Put links to new pages on your site map. If there's a corresponding page on your site that
you can use to link to the new page, you do so. Also mention the new page on your blog. Do
you have a directory associated with the particular topic dealing with the content of this new
page? Add a link on that page, too. Just make sure that you give search engines several ways
to find the new pages.
23. Always watch for ways to work with “emotional content”.
When you are thinking about what type of content to write for new promotional strategies,
always remember that the traffic is not the whole solution. You must also convert your
visitors to buyers. Always watch for ways to work with "emotional content" since most
people make their buying decisions when they are in an emotional state!
Page 16
Your promotions need to make the visitor feel good. Consider at times where the use of
humor might be incorporated or perhaps the warm fuzzy feelings produced by the tone of
your writing. This is a secret that traditional advertisers have been successfully using for
years.
24. Always have in mind your target audience when writing content.
When you write your website content, who are you focusing it on? Have the search engines
ever purchased anything from you? Forget the search engines! Focus on your customers!
When you write content, write valuable content focused on your customers. Focus on one
topic (keyword phrase) only. Your keyword-containing tags should include that one topic
(keyword phrase) only. Everything on the page should be focused on that one topic. Prove to
the search engine that your page is about that topic. The page will then be very relevant for
the topic, and it will be valuable for the customers, too.
Never create a page just for search engines. Search engines aren't and won't ever be your
customers. Keep your true customers in mind, and give them true value throughout your site
and in your content. Some of the most interesting content will have more appeal if it speaks
to your audience in terms like: you can, you might, you will, yours, your and you're instead of
we, ours, we're, we will, we can, etc. This is extremely important when working on sales
related copy.
Page 17
25. Place a “robots.txt” file on every domain.
The first thing a search engine spider looks for when it hits your website is a “robots.txt” file.
If it's looking for that file, put it on your site! This file will basically prevent search engine
bots and crawlers from accessing all or part of your website which is otherwise publicly
viewable (that’s true only for search engines that give importance to this file, otherwise your
site will be crawled no matter what). Also keep in mind not to prevent search engines from
indexing your entire website – what would be the point in not being visible to search
engines?
26. All links should follow to the same page.
http://site.com, http://www.site.com and http://www.site.com/index.html are three different
pages for search engines. So be sure that all your links are pointing to the same page (better
if it includes www).
27. Are your links visible to a search engine spider?
A lot of Content and Links displayed on a web page may not actually be visible to search
engines, e.g. Flash based content, content generated through JavaScript, content displayed
as images etc.
Page 18
Try this tool which simulates a Search Engine by displaying the contents of a webpage exactly
how a Search Engine would see it:
http://www.webconfs.com/search-engine-spider-simulator.php
28. Use paid links in an appropriate way.
If you use your newly acquired paid links in obvious areas dedicated to sponsored links, you
will only get a few clicks. Instead make use of these paid links in your body text.
29. Redirects can become cumbersome to search engines.
Even tough people won't actually notice that your pages redirect to other pages, search
engines are very sensitive to redirections. So always manage your redirections with attention
or they will produce unwanted results in SERPs. If you can avoid redirecting pages, that's
great. But if you want to redesign an old site or want to move it to another server, pay
maximum attention of how you will implement the redirections so that search engines won't
think your site died.
30. Social media is about participating, listening, not just advertising.
You can use social media to your advantage in endless ways. Just to name a few, you can use
social media to:
Page 19
• Advertise'your'product'or'website;'
• Improve'your'traffic;'
• Get'more'leads,'potential'customers'and'sales;'
• Research'and'find'out'more'about'your'targeted'market'or'niche;'
• Build'strong'relationships'with'your'existing'customers;'
• Gain'attention'and'develop'a'stronger'image.'
So always remember that the word of mouth is one of the most powerful tools to have.
31. Do keyword research and don't just guess on keywords.
Guessing keywords is the worse thing you could do, because from my own experience you
will end up having lots of keywords and phrases that could destroy your website. If you guess
your keywords and phrases, almost all the time these will either have a very strong
competition that you cannot outrank, or they will have insignificant search volumes
(meaning that people will usually not search them).
Therefore you should use specialized software or services to properly do your research and
find the keywords and phrases with the highest search volume and the least competition.
Also be aware that the longer you make your key phrases, the harder it will get to actually
get some value out of them (this is because of two main reasons: people usually search for
key phrases that are 3-4 words long, and when searching for longer phrases people will
Page 20
always use a different word ordering inside those phrases - and both search engines and
people do care about the word order of a phrase since it can lead to various meanings).
32. Build genuine SEO skills that will impact your online sales.
A beautiful website with no traffic or visibility can't survive in the business world. But a high
ranking website that gets tons of traffic, but where no one is compelled to make a purchase
or take action, won't work for you either. Think "visibility PLUS a solid call to action".
It is important to think about what search engine marketing means. It is a fascinating topic,
but it takes in much more than just the process of "optimization" alone. Search engine
marketing is actually the process of optimization plus effective marketing. You need both of
these elements for your website to be successful and to effectively make sales and convert
that new traffic.
Here's the thing to understand. Highly relevant pages that are easily found in top search
results also need to be absolutely engaging and have a legitimate value to the visitor. They
need to compel a response from the visitor - and this is where you can truly begin making
money and increasing your sales. Visibility for "quality content" combined with the skill to
compel your visitor to "take action" is what will make a nice pay check and make you happy.
