Hello, and welcome to our series of French classes entitledLearn French by Podcast. My name is Hugh Nagle andhere with me is Amlie Verdier. Bonjour, Amlie!

    Bonjour!

This first podcast is a very simple one. Amlie is going tointroduce herself very briefly. In general, well hear whatAmlie has to say 3 times. Then well come back and lookmore closely at some key points. Ok, Amlie, were ready!

Je mappelle Amlie. Jhabite Paris. Je suisprofesseur danglais.

Ok. And the 2nd timeJe mappelle Amlie []

And the 3rd timeJe mappelle Amlie []

Ok. Lets look at the first thing you said: Je mappelleAmlie. Many people will already know this expression.Lets make just one point about pronunciation and this

applies generally in French we have je mappelle. That is,theres a slight stress on the finalsyllable.Ok. Now remember that if you are not sure about theverb appeler or any other vocabulary in these podcasts youll find it all in our accompanying PDF Guides, downloadable from our website at learnfrenchbypodcast.com.Ok. Then, Amlie, you told us where you live. You said:

    Jhabite Paris.

    Jhabite. Thats the verb habiter

This verb verb starts with the letter h. h-a-b-i-t-e-r.

Listen to the pronunciation of these next examples: Annelives in Sidney.

    Anne habite Sidney.

Paul lives in Bangkok.Paul habite Bangkok.

We cannot hear that h. Remember: if a French wordbegins with h, it will be absolutely silent. This h isknown as a mute h. Some other words which begin withthis mute h are the the word owl

    un hibou

    the verb to chop

    hacher

    The verbe to boohuer

    Remember!

    mute h

The hat the start of words like

en hiver [winter] La Hongrie [Hungary] lhomopathie [homeopathy] honnte [honest]

is described as mutebecause it isnot pronounced.

    Dialogue

    Lesson 01: Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

Level:beginner. introducing yourself saying where you live

    saying what you do

    Remember!

To say you live in a city

Simply put the preposition beforethe city name, e.g. Jhabite Munich.

To say you live in a country,

there are variations. For now, remember the following:

    Jhabite | enFrance | enEspagne | enItalie | enAngleterre

    but

    Jhabite | auxEtats-Unis

Huer thats an interesting verb. Now, just to see thatverb in action, so to speak, how would we say The crowdis booing?

    La foule hue.

    One more time?La foule hue.

Ok. So lets remember not to pronounce that h muet the silent h.

Now theres another point: once again, when you told uswhere you live, you said:

    Jhabite Paris.

If you lived in Toronto, you would sayJhabite Toronto.

And, in the case of Shanghai, it would beJhabite Shanghai.

We can see that, in the case of city names, we simply put

    in front. Jhabite Londres

    Jhabite Tokyo

    Jhabite Varsovie.

In the case of countries, things are a little bit morecomplicated. Amlie, which country do you live in?

    Jhabite enFrance.

How about your uncle?Il habite enAllemagne.

And your friend, Maria?Elle est Espagnole; elle habite enEspagne.

How about George Bush?!Le Prsident amricain?! Bien sr, il habite auxEtats-Unis.

Lets hear that once more George Bush, o habite-il?Il habite auxEtats-Unis.

You can see that in has several versions in French:enFrance, enAllemagne, enEspagne but auxEtats-Unis. For now, lets just remember these countries.

    Lesson 01: Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

Level:beginner. introducing yourself saying where you live

    saying what you do

Dialogue Now, finally, you told us about your job. You saidJe suis professeur danglais.

An English teacher. If you were an engineer, you wouldsay

    Je suis ingnieur.

    Or a floristJe suis fleuriste.

    Or a doctorJe suis docteur.

In English, we say I am ateacher, He is anengineer, andso on. In French, though, there is no indefinite article. Its just simply, Je suis , followed by the profession. Jesuis mcanicien, je suis comptable, and so on.

Amlie, weve covered quite a few points in this firstlesson. Until next time!

    A la prochaine!

    Remember!

When talking about professions, trades, etc, there is noindefinite article (un, une):

Je suis architecte [= I am an architect.]

If you understood our lesson, then you should be ready for the following

    1. My name is Stefan.

    2. I live in England.

    3. She lives in Berlin.

    4. They boo! [In this case, imagine youre referring to supporters at a football match.*]

    4. He is an accountant.

    5. They are engineers. [In this case, imagine youre referring to your aunt and uncle.*]

    6. They are teachers. [In this case, imagine youre referring to your two sisters.*]

(*see Ils or elles? on the right)

    See the answers at http://www.learnfrenchbypodcast.com/FTEW_pages/answers.htm

    Vocab extra!

la prochaine! .......Until next time! Allemagne .............Germany Angleterre .............England Bien sr! ................ Certainly! comptable .............( an) accountant Espagne.................Spain espagnol [adj.] ......Spanish

    foule (f) ................. crowd mcanicien ............ (a) mechanic Varsovie.................Warsaw

    ils or elles?

Which pronoun should we usefor they?

There are two words (pronouns) fortheyi n French ils and elles. These are the masculine and feminineplural pronouns, respectively. Whenwere talking about more than 1

person, we must use the masculineplural pronoun if any person in

the group is male. (Elles, on theother hand is used when talking aboutmore than 1 person, all of whom arefemale.)
