Absenteeism will not be tolerated. The South African Schools Act (No. 84 of 1996) clarifies expectations regarding compulsory attendance. A note from the parent must be brought and handed to the class teacher on the first day a learner returns to school after being absent. A MEDICAL CERTIFICATE must be brought after absence from examinations or other scheduled tests or assessments. Failure to do this will result in a zero mark. Learners should always be in their school uniform. Pride in uniform and appearance reflects an overall respect for oneself and the school. Inappropriate or indiscreet behaviour will be viewed as a lack thereof. HAIRSTYLES: ALL LEARNERS’ HAIR MUST ALWAYS BE CLEAN, NEAT AND TIDY BOYS: A simple, neat and tidy hair cut is allowed. No upper cuts OR “Mohawk” hairstyles shall be permitted i.e. shaven sides and fuzzy top or any other wayout creations No “step” cuts. No headgear. No fades. Short cut for boys must not exceed one centimeter (1cm) in height. Boys are not allowed to wear any extensions GIRLS:. Girls may wear cornrows provided it: o Goes straight back; o Is no longer than covering the back of the neck. o Is tied with a black or navy pomp/ elastic band o No fancy hair styles shall be permitted. .. o Note that: Dreadlocks will only be allowed on submission to the SMT and SGB official evidence from a religious leader confirming that the learner applicant is a practitioner of the Rastafarian faith. Jewellery: No jewellery, only a plain, traditionaltype watch. For pierced ears, ONLY small plain metal sleepers or studs are allowed. Only one pair may be worn one earring in the lower part of the lobe (and lowest pierced hole) of each ear. NB: No other visible piercing is allowed (e.g. labret, tongue, nose). Covering a piercing with a plaster, or using a bristle to keep the hole open, is also not allowed No false nails, coloured nail polish, French manicure or henna is permitted.

Learners shall conduct themselves in a law abiding, disciplined and decent manner which proudly upholds the Thandokhulu High School (TK HS) ethos and tradition.

Bullying/ Other Threats are not allowed. No learner may be party to threats or intimidation of any kind against the school or any other parties. Involvement in such activities may result in immediate suspension, pending expulsion. Criminal charges may also be laid. Learners are expected to treat each other with total respect at all times.

Alcohol, Tobacco & Drugs: No learner may bring these substances onto the school grounds, consume them on school property or be on the school grounds when under the influence of these substances. Contravention of this rule may lead to immediate suspension, pending expulsion.

Cellular phones may only be used at breaks and then away from the school building. This includes the sending and receiving of SMS/text messages. Cell phones must be switched off at all other times. If this rule is broken, the cell phone (and sim card) will be confiscated. Cell phones confiscated will only be kept for a minimum of three months after which a release amount of R50 will have to be paid to get the equipment back.

Parents are requested not to try to contact their learners during class time. In compliance with WCED rules, learners may not have a cell phone on their person when writing

a test or an examination. They may not be used as a calculator. All cell phones must be handed in to the invigilator before the start of the test or examination. Any attempt to use a cell phone during a test or examination will be construed as dishonesty and will be treated as such. (See CHEATING below)

CHEATING: Any learner found cheating in a test or examination will have his/her paper removed forthwith by the invigilator. He/She will receive NOUGHT (0) for that examination and could face further disciplinary action.

PERSONAL BELONGINGS: The school will not be held responsible for theft of or damage to personal belongings on school premises (e.g. cell phones, bags, books and clothing). Learners are responsible for all their belongings. Learners are expected to take full responsibility for the safety of their possessions. Learners should not bring valuable items or large sums of money to school as the school will not be held liable for loss of such.

Learners are expected to treat their educators the same way as they do their parents, with full respect.

Learners are only allowed in the toilets during intervals and in cases of emergency, with permission from the educator.

No graffiti is allowed on school buildings and toilets. TATOOES: No tatooes are allowed especially on arms and legs. Vandalism will not be tolerated and any form of damaging or defacing of property such as

furniture, walls, equipment, books will be regarded as a most serious offence. If they do so they must know they are liable for costs thereof.

If a learner brings school into disrepute of any kind, the learner will appear before the School Governing Body (SGB) , disciplinary committee and be dealt with accordingly.
