design is also a wicked problem lolPerhaps introduce the idea of wicked problems earlier so the other stuff makes sense?

Moving backwards from people, talks about the learning EXPERIENCE, using empathy!

What is design? You cannot hold a design in your hand. It's not a thing. It's a process. A system. A way of thinking. (Bob Gill)

Design Thinking is a creative process of thinking backwards from people, that leads to design of a service, a product etc., based on the conclusions of the knowledge gathered in the process. (Pilar Saura)

Do we really need a simple definition of design or should we accept that design is too complex a matter to be summarized in less than a book?(Bryan Lawson)

design process: early stages

Imagine. Investigate. Inspire. Ideate. Prototype. Evaluate. Reflect.

Agree - move up
Jolanda De Villiers Morkel
We can move this slide up - let's confirm the sequence later

DIVERGENT THINKING

CONVERGENT THINKING

Jolanda De Villiers Morkel
Yes, and to the people-issue
Nicola Pallitt
are you speaking to the mindset stuff here?
Page 12: Learning Design Worskhop

Lawson, 2005

Designers ‘play around with ideas to get more understanding about the problem rather than focus on just finding a solution.’ Maher & Poon, 1996

Nicola Pallitt
need 3 slides for design process? Or talk to your sketch?
Jolanda De Villiers Morkel
Perhaps we only need one slide.
Jolanda De Villiers Morkel
Take out 20 - we can use it later.
Jolanda De Villiers Morkel
Take out 19 - can use it later
Jolanda De Villiers Morkel
Perhaps keep 18 to show the typical linear sequential approach
Jolanda De Villiers Morkel
Perhaps take out the red ellipse in slide 21

Concepts are frameworks within which we can design solutions to problems/ challenges.

They can be seen as a coherent set of guiding principles, which inform us at every step of the design process.

Use of a model to direct the decision-making process.

They are development of our overall design intention.

They should NOT be seen as static and unchangeable, but rather as flexible and malleable approaches.

They guides us to make decisions about any aspect of the design.

To prioritize design issues that have to be dealt with (limits design decisions).

Ideation exercise Use keywords and sketching to…

- Imagine your assigned experienceand thoroughly describe it- Name a learning intervention that matches the nature of the experience- Describe the learning intervention, using the analogy as concept
