What is a “learning professional”?
“Training” has evolved to
include a broad range of
activities that promote
workplace learning and
successful on-the-job
performance.
What is your job title?
ASTD has been using the
term “workplace learning
and performance
professional” since 1999.
After this webinar, you will be able to :
• Locate and describe the accepted
competencies for WLPs.
• Identify strategies you can use to
increase your effectiveness as a WLP.
• Describe the benefits of membership or
other involvement in ASTD.
• Identify resources provided by CLENE
and other library-related organizations.
Competencies are your
roadmap to success!
A quick definition of competencies…
• Knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSAs)
• Correlate with successful performance
on the job
• Measured against well-accepted
standards
• Improved through training and
development
The 2004 ASTD Competency Study provides standards and competencies for workplace learning professionals.

Roles of a WLP
Create opportunities
to “grow forward.”
If you work in a STAFF job,
seek experience in
LINE jobs.
Build and use your
professional network.
Is formal education right
for you?
Find a mentor…and
ask for feedback.
Create a “To Learn”
list.
Put yourself in the learning
role. Value any difficulties you
encounter.
• Employee Learning Week is an ASTD awareness campaign to recognize:
• The value of employee learning
• The important connection between a highly skilled workforce and organizational results
• It is an opportunity for all WLP professionals and their organizations to demonstrate commitment to workforce development.
