Division of Computer Engineering & Information Science Hellenic Air Force Academy, Greece [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Free and Open-Source Software is developed by both professional and amateur programmers throughout the world. Out of this collective work many brilliant products have emerged, some of which are very successful and widely used for professional applications. Examples include operating systems, web servers, browsers, e-learning platforms, data base management systems, programming languages etc. It is noteworthy how various programmers across the globe, without professional management, without traditional premises, do cooperate and produce remarkable results. This phenomenon has existed for the last twenty years and things show that it spreads and matures as time progresses. Free and Open-Source software is definitely related to communities: developers’ communities and users’ communities such as the various Linux User Groups (or LUGs), spread worldwide. There seems to be a mechanism of su ccession, with whi ch, new programmers are ed ucated by s enior programmers to continue the tasks. In this way, communities continue to exist, regardless of the persons. The above give evidence for important informal learning mechanisms, which produce remarkable results of professional quality. The purpose of this paper is to study the operation and co-operation of these communities, focusing on the informal continuing education mechanisms which take place within them. Περίληψη Με τον όρο Ελεύθερο Λογισµικό / Λογισµικό Ανοικτού Κώδικα ή συντοµογραφικώς ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ, εννοούµε λογισµικό που διατίθεται συνήθως δωρεάν και ταυτόχρονα χορηγεί στους χρήστες του όχι µόνο τον πηγαίο κώδικα αλλά και την άδεια να τον µελετήσουν, τροποποιήσουν, αντιγράψουν και αναδιανείµουν. Μέσω της συλλογικής τηλεργασίας επαγγελµατιών και ερασιτεχνών προγραµµατιστών απ’ όλο τον κόσµο, έχουν αναπτυχθεί τα τελευταία 20 έτη, µεγάλα και επιτυχηµένα λογισµικά που χρησιµοποιούνται παγκοσµίως, τόσο σε επαγγελµατικές εφαρµογές όσο και για προσωπική χρήση. Γνωστές εφαρµογές ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ αφορούν λειτουργικά συστήµατα ΗΥ, πλατφόρµες τηλεκπαίδευσης, συστήµατα διαχείρισης βάσεων δεδοµένων, διακοµιστές και γλώσσες προγραµµατισµού. Είναι αξιοσηµείωτο το πώς πάσης φύσεως προγραµµατιστές από κάθε γωνιά του κόσµου, χωρίς εγκαταστάσεις, χωρίς κεντρικά γραφεία και διοίκηση, καταφέρνουν να συνεργάζονται και να παράγουν προϊόντα υψηλού επιπέδου. Το φαινόµενο αυτό έχει επηρεάσει την παραγωγή λογισµικού παγκοσµίως και είναι άρρηκτα συνδεδεµένο µε τις διεθνείς και κατά τόπους κοινότητες όχι µόνο των προγραµµατιστών αλλά και των χρηστών κάθε προϊόντος. Αποδεικνύεται ότι µέσα στις κοινότητες αυτές λειτουργούν µηχανισµοί επιµόρφωσης νέων στελεχών, σταδιακής διαδοχής και άτυπης συνεργατικής µάθησης µέσω των ΤΠΕ (CSCL).
