Hyperbole- is exaggerated statement that creates an idea in a readers mind. It is used to emphasize a point or add excitement and
humor. They are not meant to be taken literally.
Example: It’s so cold, I saw polar bears wearing jackets outside.
Example: Her heart stopped when the door flew open.
What is a metaphor?
A metaphor compares two things that are not alike. A metaphor does not use like or as. In a metaphor, one things is said to be another.
Ex: The lake was a mirror.
Why do we use metaphors?
Similes are a comparison of two things that are not usually thought
to be alike.
Ex. Her hair was as shining as the sun. A simile is an example of figurative language.
Figurative language provides a more “colorful” way of expressing something.
A simile uses the clue words like or as to make the comparison.
